Kiwis....

Just curious is it common for kiwis to make your tongue and mouth tingle almost burn? I've had them here and there before, but I thought it would be worth it to go ahead and see if my boys like them. My 21 month old loves them :) In cutting them up for him I've taken a few bites and every time as soon as it touched my tongue I get this god awful tingling sensation. It does eventually go away I just thought it was weird...

Oddly enough, what got me thinking was that my 21 month old woke up 2 days ago (when I started offering the kiwi) with this random bronchial cough! He doesn't seem run down or sick, no obvious signs of nasal congestion, but a productive bronchial cough. I'm kind of wondering if maybe my reaction might be an allergy symptom & his out of nowhere chesty cough a symptom to it too! Btw he has had breathing issues in the past with viral things but doesn't appear sick in the sense of a cold/allergies/flu at all?

Thoughts? Should I stop giving him the kiwi or is this just a random coincidence?

What can I do next?

Kiwi allergies are really pretty common!

I would stop giving him (and you) kiwi.

Google "kiwi allergy" and you'll get a lot of symptoms...the mildest include tongue irritation (probably the tingling you're describing) and swelling of the lips and tongue...

My best friend gets a migraine anytime he eats anything that has so much as been close to a kiwi. He has never been tested for an allergy or anything. He just knows better then to try it. He did the process of elimination to figure out that was what was doing it. He is glad that the headaches stopped though.

It could be that you have an allergy to it. Your kiddo may be displaying signs of an allergy as well. You may want to have yourself and kiddo tested. You dont want to keep eating it and have it react horribly one time.

My daughter is allergic to latex and banans and kiwi is one of those foods that is closely associated with them. She also has the tongue/mouth tingly feeling with kiwi but does not pop positive for an allergy with them.
I would stay away from kiwi until the child is able to verbalize any weird feelings he gets while eating it or just after.

I can't eat kiwi for this same reason. I get the mouth tingle. My daughter (9) loves them and isn't affected at all.

Okay: my daughter used to eat Kiwi all the time.
Then when she was about 2 years old, she got the symptoms you described. THAT is allergy symptoms.

I do NOT give my Daughter Kiwi anymore, since that age.

It can be a VERY seriously bad reaction. AND it CAN BE DANGEROUS.
Some, even get MUCH pain, and swelling of the mouth/tongue/throat/face.... and then you cannot breathe. For example.

DO NOT GIVE KIWI ANYMORE.

If you research Kiwi allergy online, you will get information.

Our Pediatrician, in all these years, had NEVER heard of a Kiwi allergy. Until my daughter.

Kiwis are tart which is exactly why my family loves them. You really can't get anything tart enough for us. We like it.
You can get this "tingling" sensation from anything that is acidic like citrus or pickles.
I would venture to say that it could have something to do with the receptors in your taste buds. Some people are highly sensitive to salt or sweet tastes. You may be sensitive to things that are acidic.

If your son loves kiwi and doesn't have an issue, I wouldn't take them away from him. Too much of anything isn't good so use moderation. Kiwis are amazing sources of vitamin C. I wouldn't blame the kiwi for his random cough. You're in Redlands and I'm sure it's heating up around there weatherwise. A random cough could be anything.
If your son doesn't have a rash, no sores in his mouth or swelling of his lips, I wouldn't blame the kiwi.

Just my opinion.

That really does sound like it could be an allergy. The scary thing about allergies is that it can get worse with subsequent exposure. So this time it could only be the tingle, next time or a couple times down the line it could be his entire airway swelling and he could stop breathing. I would personally stop feeding kiwis until you can verify it is in fact the cause and he's older to verbalize any reaction he may be having. I would never mess with something so potentially deadly!

My sister and I both get the tongue tingle after eating them...pretty sure we are mildly allergic but nothing swells so we continue to eat them!

~I do not think the cough is related to the Kiwi...most allergies tend to show up right away, not after a nights sleep or a nap...but it doesn't hurt to check with the Dr. and to keep a log and an eye on it.
