Need a Medical Break

I have posted before about having burning tongue syndrome for about a month now. I went to the dr and she did normal blood tests and they all came back normal. I am having dry eyes as well and now tightening of my left hand and left foot. The foot started before I got pregnant. But I have a 5 year old that has been licking her hands then her eyes. Her pediatrician thinks it is behavioral b/c of the baby. But I find it odd that we both have dry eyes. Her pediatrician said kids can't have dry eyes. She understands that her eyes are dry in school to she must do it. I would like to know if breast feeding has anything to do with it for me and hormones. My dr thinks it is acid for me and has given up on anything else( I have only seen her once for this) she told me to go see my dentist and that is it. So I don't know how to help my daughter and myself. Any suggestions? Thanks.

What can I do next?

If you both are having dry eyes, why not see an eye doctor about it?
Saline lubricating eye drops in the morning and at night.
Dry eyes might be a symptom of a vitamin A deficiency.
Eating some liver every once in awhile or a daily multivitamin might help (I love liver and onions myself) .
Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and a humidifier at night might help too.

Before you mentioned the part about your child, I have to admit that it sounded like you might have the beginnings of MS. MS is a hard diagnosis, and they only come to that diagnosis by ruling out a lot of other diagnoses and then looking for certain changes in the brain. But I don't think that you AND your child would have that...

If I were you, I would get a good neurologist for YOU and work on this . I think it's a lot more likely that your daughter's issues are behavioral, OR she is having issues with her eyes that a pediatric opthamologist should ckeck on.

I have no idea about the breastfeeding. If you feel that you need to rule everything out, go ahead and stop breastfeeding.

Good luck getting some help, mom!

1) Tongue burning is nearly always caused by a mild allergy. Cumin used to do it to me. Ugh.

Moms pick up new allergies (old ones get stronger) during pregnancy & postpartum. Carrying seperate DNA in our bodies mean our systems get wacky in order to allow the "invading organism" to live. Our immune & histamine responses get stomped on. When they come back online, there are often quirks (lessening or strengthening of old allergies is common).

1.5) Constant low-level allergy exposure does weird stuff to our bodies. From hayfever type symptoms (itchy, dry, or watery eyes), to digestive upsets, to skin rashes, to muscle spasms. IN THEORY, tongue/eyes/hand-foot could all be allergy related.

... People can be allergic to ANYTHING. Common ones are fairly well known, but I'm deathly allergic to watermelon. I have a friend whose skin starts bubbling and melting if they touch Teak (the wood), etc.

... Time for an "exclusion diet".

Which is a pain, but a necessity.

Instead of removing 1 food at a time (unless there is a glaring suspect)... My family removes everything except 1. Like, today we shall eat chicken. No salt/pepper/herbs/sauces. Just chicken. Tomorrow add applesauce & plain white rice.

2) Your stuff may not be related at all. Hand & foot cramps, stiffness, tightening are common... With myriad causes. From as simple as sleeping funny while cosleeping to potassium deficiencies to standing awkwardly (like with a baby on your shoulder). To hundreds of others.

3) Of course kids get dry eyes.

Are you currently breastfeeding? Yes, I looked it up, you have a 1 month old.

It seems the most alarming symptoms are the tightening of the left hand, left foot, even before pregnancy. Add the burning tongue and this all sounds like neurological problems.

Do you think you hydrate yourself well? And your daughter drinks enough liquids and soups?

Update...Hi K., I explained your symptoms to my hubs and he recommends you see a Rheumatologist as soon as possible.

Are there times of the days the symptoms are better? Worse?

I have dry eyes and I went to an ophthamologist who diagnosed me and recommended a specific eye drop. I don't remember what he called it.

I also have a sore tongue. It's a burnng sort of sensation. I think it's an allergic reaction. My tongue has been itchy and I've gotten into the habit of sucking on my tongue to scratch it. The itch is gone but I'm still sucking it.

You ahve the added symptom of tightening of my left hand and foot.

I suggest that they all may not be related. I would focus on the tightening of the hand and foot because that sounds more serious. I'd go back to my doctor and ask that this be evaluated. He may refer you to a neurologist. Or you can call a neurologist and ask to speak to an advice nurse and ask if this is something that the neurologist would see you about.

I'd see an ophthamologist for the eye dryness. They have a scope in which they can see the structure of your eye. They can also tell if you have blocked tear ducts.

I've not seen a dentist about my tongue but I've been thinking about calling their office and asking about it.

I also suggest that your daughter licking her hands and rubbing her eyes may not have anything to do with her eyes being dry. I suggest she's discovered this action and is "practicing" or she's liking the attention doing this gets her.

Your doctor thought the sore tongue could be related to acid. Have you stopped eating acid foods to see if that helps? My daughter said that she's discovered that many foods she thought were neutral are acidic. Perhaps google acidic foods to find a list of foods that are acidic.

Or perhaps you could always rinse out your mouth immediately after eating.

If that doesn't help then do go back to see the doctor. Medicine is a "practice." Doctors often do not know the cause of something until they rule out possibilities.

I can't think of a reason that would cause breast feeding to cause any of these symptoms. Did you ask the doctor about that?
