JFF: Piggyback off of "Relatives Who Marry"

So does anyone here read Dear Prudence? There is a very freaky letter on yesterday's DP. Warning, if you're easily freaked out on this subject, don't read it! It's on slate.com, first letter. Some commenters are saying it might be fake. Do you think this kind of stuff really happen. I must lead a pretty sheltered life, I couldn't imagine anything like that could happen. I can only say I'm glad there are no children involved.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have never been home during the day. Yes, I've heard of Jerry Springer. Didn't know he is still on TV. So, the conventional wisdom that it's ok for same sex kids to share a room is out the window. :-)
I still get freaked out when I think of Dead Ringers. Didn't know it was based on real people. I thought it was fiction.
I didn't want to post a link because I didn't want someone to accidentally click on it. If you really want to read the story, you'll have to type.

Do you mean the brotherly love, the two twin boys who are in love with each other? Yikes, that is scary. And yes, I believe it can happen. I've heard of worse. We live in a seriously screwed up world. Another one on there right now is "Husband is leaving me for my 25 year old daughter from another marriage."...

**As for Jerry Springer, some of it is real, but a lot of those stories are by paid actors... I knew a few friends that did a couple of those reality shows.

Lots of societies practice incest (the ancient egyptians are some of the most famous with brother/sister marriages) to "keep the line pure". Well, we don't breed like horses or dogs, our recessives breed true instead of reinforcing dominants, in those types of relationships and "fresh blood" has to be brought in.

In many other socieities plural marriage between twins and 1 or 2 other spouses (so the twins wouldn't be separated) were VERY common, although by no means inisisted upon. In my readings, sexual relations seemed to be like a 'normal' threesome or foursome... meaning all 3 or 4 participate OR 'separate but equal' types where only 2 people are having sex together.

So could it be true?

Sure. There's quite a lot of historical and cultural precedent.

((FAIR WARNING: According to the Kinseys, and other child psych research... the most common 'first partner' for sexual experimentation is with siblings. Siblings touching tongues, french kissing, genital play, mututal masturbation, even penetration. Typically... this is all done before puberty... the most common age ranges for it are 3-6 and 8-10. THIS IS COMPLETELY NORMAL. The vast majority of siblings experiment to greater or lesser degree. THIS IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than molestation, or the romantic relationship described in the letter. Most of the time parents catch them, tell them to knock it off four or five times -like most things few kids listen after one 'Hey! Stop that!'-, and they do. Most kids don't even remember any of it because memories for so many people start at kindergarten.))

Haven't you heard of Jerry Springer? He's been on the air for like 16 years or something so you know there are PLENTY of these crazy damn people out there so nothing surprises me anymore.

I love Dear Prudie! I do think that the letters are real, they are anonymous and who would want to make up a story like that? Plus, there are all kinds of people in this world with lots of problems.

I don't know the article or show but by law the only reason relatives can't marry is due to recessive genes and the gene pool getting gunked up because of it. It comes from the old English families that were royalty. They intermarried and you can see a lot of craziness and deformities due to the genes becoming dominant instead of staying recessive.

In today's legal areas first cousin's can't marry due to the same reasons. If they are more distant than first cousins they are not considered to legally be related and can marry.

I think a brother and sister doing the deed is nasty, I think that first cousins who have grown up doing it is nasty.

But the truth is that they are the ones they are around when they hit puberty.

When I was in college in psychology classes I was quite shocked to hear the statistics, of "the reported" cases of incest, over 65% are between brothers and sisters. They are left unsupervised, they share bedrooms, bathrooms, etc...they have close proximity, they see each other one day as something other than a sibling and things start happening.

It is more common that any of us want to think about.
