Hi everyone hope the summer is treating everyone well.

My question isl; Can I remove my own IUD?

I don't have health insurance and I would not take a dog to the health department. SO I am just wondering if anyone out there knows the answer to this question.

I don't want to sound crazy or anything like that.. just wondering.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

No! BUT you can find a local clinic to do it for you for free more then likely. Try something like a Planned Parenthood. Seems like these facilites are on every street corner now. Good luck.

You can but you probably shouldn't. Try Planned Parenthood.

Absolutely NO, NO, NO! You could puncture your uterus if you try it and end up hemorrhaging. A professional has to do it. Try going to your local "planned parenthood" clinic. While I disagree ethically and politically with them and believe that they are a blight on modern America (my own personal opinion) maybe they're just the resource you need.

Personally I would call around and see what they will charge you. Try a midwife or planned parenthood, they have sliding fee scales.

Technically (spare me the hate mail and nasty comments please, this is just my opinion) I think it can be done on your own if you don't have any other options. You can google the "health care professional information insert" for your IUD and it will have the removal instructions. If your IUD is correctly in place a gentle tug on the string should easily remove it.
That is all the doctor does when they remove it, there is no special training that they go through.
If it doesn't budge with gentle tugging don't force it. In that case you must see a health care provider as it might be embedded and need instrumental or surgical removal. This is rare.
It is easiest to remove (or place) when you are on your period.
Good luck!

I have to agree with the others. It's best to call some OBGYNs or local family planning clinics and agree on a price. I'm sure it's quite easy for a trained professional, but don't do it yourself!

No and it's not a good idea to try. You could cause more problems and then be really in a pickle with no health insurance. I would recommend if you want it removed, to call the doctor's office, explain the situation and ask them how much it would cost out of pocket, as well as if they have any discounts for someone without insurance.

Go to a proper clinic. You could injure yourself and end up costing ten times what a normal visit would cost. Have you had a bad experience at the health dept? I like the one in will county. Most doctors will negotiate special rates for uninsured.

I wouldn't even try it. It hurts and if you do it wrong you could really damage yourself.

And people think I AM a little crazy because I've removed my own stitches on more than one occasion!

There are plenty of free or sliding scale clinics that can safely remove this for you. Have you tried calling a couple of OB/GYN offices, explaining your situation, and asking what they'd charge for a cash payment? You could also find a midwifery practice that would be less than a doctor's office...and yet perfectly qualified to do so.

If you don't think you have a $100 to spend on a removal what makes you think you can afford a $1000 emergency room bill if something doesn't go as anticipated?

I am willing to bet you can find someone to remove it for less than $200.

Good luck.

If I remember right the charge for having mine placed was in the $100-200 range so I can't imagine that having one removed would cost more than that. I wouldn't risk something like that with something as important as your uterus.

I wouldn't suggest doing it...you might be able to get help through the local family planning services

I'm sorry, but is this a joke?! Of course, you shouldn't remove your own IUD. Please see your OBGYN on this matter.
