I have been using the IUD for seven years now and have been really pleased with it. It is a simple procedure that only takes a few minutes to put in an take out. It is as uncomfortable as a pap smear, maybe even less. Good luck!

The cramping I experience was not much worse than period cramps. Taking ibuprofen a couple hours before hand like they suggest helps immensely. I had trouble going off of depo shot, and any bc pill i've ever taken has made me sick in time. I love my IUD (Mirena). I don't have to worry about pills making me sick (or remembering to take them), I don't have to have a shot that makes me gain weight and bleed for months on end when I go off it. I never even really have to think about it. I don't think I'll ever use anything else. I only had cramping for a day or two, and spotting for maybe a month or two. No big deal. I can't remember exactly how long the spotting lasted, but it seems pretty insignificant now. I also have much lighter and less painful periods now. I would recommend an IUD to anyone who is considering it. Good luck with your choice.

I had the Mirena for 1.5 years. It didn't hurt at all when they put it in, although I've heard other women say they've had some pain, but I did cramp really bad for a few hours afterwards. I just had it removed a couple of months ago because all my periods lasted a minimum of 2 weeks, and I had a lot of spotting in between periods. I just got sick of dealing with it. Most women, however, have extremely light periods or none at all. I have several friends who LOVE their Mirenas! Oh, and it didn't hurt at all to have it removed.

Hi! I had an IUD put in before I had my daughter and it did hurt, but the doctor said it hurts less after you've had a child (your uterus stretches and is more pliable). And the procedure for putting it in didn't take long. Afterwards I remember being achy for a couple of days, and feeling like I wouldn't want to jump around or take an aerobics class. Then I got my period (maybe a week later) and it was pretty heavy and I was crampy. But after that I never had any problems with it and loved having it. I got it removed after about a year and a half when we wanted to start having children and got pregnant right away. Hope this helps! (Oh, and I don't remember it hurting when it came out).

I have had an IUD for about 8 months now. It didn't really hurt when the doctor put it in. So far I think it's great.

I had two different IUD's during my fertile years. I experienced only mild cramping during the placement and removal of both, and no other problems during use. Considerably less uncomfortable than childbirth.

I had an IUD put in a lil over a year ago, and well Im not gonna lie to you it did not feel good. They said it would feel like a cramp, but I think it was worse. It was only for a minute or two though, and I dont have to worry about birth control any more so to me a minute or two of pain was worth it.

Hi B.

I just had the mirena put in about 4-5 weeks ago. In relation to having a baby it doesn't hurt. I was more scarred of the unknown and it was not that bad. My problem is that I have been spotting since they put it in. They say you can do this for up to 3 months, which doesn't help your sex life. It sucks and I've thought about having it taken out, but I'm trying to deal with it. They say eventually most people stop bleeding all together. Also, if I do a lot of activity I start to cramp and bleed heavier. Not sure if this happens for most people. I would talk to you doctor about all the concerns and possible symptoms. Good luck on your decision.

Just an FYI. I don't know when you believe life begins or if you are for or against abortion, but an IUD prevents a fertilized egg (developing baby) from implanting. So if you believe that life begins at conception and you are opposed to abortion for that reason, you will want to avoid an IUD.

There can be cramping on insertion and removal, but it is relatively mild. They usually insert around the time of period, when things are "open" anyway to make it go easier. And they are usually reserved for women who have had vaginal deliveries. Your doctor is required by law to give you information and a discussion about the risks and benefits. Most IUDs these days have hormones. So if you could not tolerate Oral contraceptives, and IUD might not be the best choice.

I JUST got my IUD (Mirena) put in yesterday. It was a slight cramp and discomfort. Some spotting also occurs. I popped a couple of Ibprofen's an hour before my appointment, and I think it numbed the worst of the pain. I'm perfectly fine now, just mild cramping.

I recently had the IUD put in and while it wasn't comfortable going in, it certainly wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I was scared, but like I said, I felt cramping that was worthy of taking ibuprofen, and didn't end up experiencing that much pain. I don't have experience with it coming out, but I bet that is easier than going in.

I am a Certified Medical Assistant and have seen several of these placed. Some women take it really well, some do not. It cramps quite a bit when placed, and for a few days after. My oppinion is that it would be worth the short period of cramping, since it does last for up to 10 years of protection.

B.,
I had the Meridian IUD inserted when my 1st and only daughter was about 4 months old. It did hurt quite a bit while being inserted. I'm not going to beat around the bush. But I figure I gave birth and that hurt too, worse in fact, so I can take 1 minute of some pain. I'm still glad I decided on the IUD...it's been great not having to remember the pill.

I have a Paraguard and I love it. When it got put in it just felt like a bad period cramp. I had a period that was really heavy and crampy for the first 2 months after I got it in but after that I went back to normal and it is great.

I had Mirena for 2 years in between my kids. Didn't hurt putting it in, didn't hurt getting it out. Look at their website, it's so small! Didn't have any periods the whole time it was in, and no complications or side effects, and was pregnant within two months after getting it out and having one period. I highly recommend it personally. Check with your doctor!

Hi B.. I had the Mirena placed because I too am bad with BCPs and I wanted to make sure that I didn't get pregnant again! My advice to you is to not get it if you are a wimp about menstrual cramps, or if you already get really bad mentstrual cramps. The side effects of getting it placed are spotting and cramping, and they don't lie. I've had mine for about 3 months now, almost 4, and I've probablly only had 3 weeks of NO spotting- all the rest of the time, I spot. Its annoying and I never quite feel like I'm off my period. The spotting starts without warning, so I've gotten caught out in public and I go to the restroom, and I've gotta find feminine products if I've forgotten to restock my purse. As for the cramping, it comes and goes pretty much all the time, but is much more intense the week before I start and during my period, and after sex. But I sure like the peace of mind and laying in bed not worrying about "Did I take my pill today?" I'm frustrated with the spotting, and take Tylenol if the cramps get unbearable, but otherwise, I'm gonna wait it out another couple months because I think I'm just about to make it past the "couple months" it takes for your body to get used to it. OK, sorry this is long winded- just my honest experience.

I had the IUD for just barely over a year and had it taken out. My experience was yes it hurt/cramped when it was put in and taken out. But it was gone later that day. The reason why I had it taken out was because - I got to the point in a 3-4 month period I would bleed like everyother week. Or go like two weeks without bleeding then have intercourse and bleed again. So, I decided to have it taken out and now I am using the Nuva-Ring. I used it before, so I am happy with it. Also, I have a lot of friends, in fact most of my friends have the IUD and love - that's why I tried it. It just didn't work for me and my body. Good luck.
