Considering Mirena IUD. Share Your Experience

I am considering getting the Mirena IUD. I have two wonderful kids and am 99% sure I'm done, but not quite ready to do anything permanent. I'd love to hear your experience with Mirena (both good and bad).
Thanks!

FYI: I get Migraines the week of my period on the pill. Any experience with Mirena and hormonal migraines would be appreciated. As well as if your periods stopped all together or if you had excessive bleeding or constant spotting.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Based on everyone's mostly good experiences, I decided to get the Mirena IUD. The placement was only mildy uncomfortable. So far, no bleeding and only an occasional cramp. My doctor seems to think it will help rid me of most of my migraines, too. I'm hoping for the best!
Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences.

I have a 4 yr. old girl and 2 yr. old boy and went through the same situation after I had my son. I went with the Mirena IUD and could not be happier!!! They told me that it could shorten my period and within a few months it was down to a couple of days every other month or so. I have not had any side effects and can't feel anything.

I got pregnant with my daughter while I was on the pill so did not want to try it again and had the Ortha Evra patch afterward which caused a lot of bloating.

I can not say enough good things about Mirena and have had it in for about 2 years now.

Hopefully this helps!

K.,
I had the Mirena IUD inserted in January 2006 and for 6 weeks straight I bled a really heavy period and I gained 20lbs. I had the IUD taken out and the bleeding stopped and so did the weight gain. Unfortunatly I still have the weight though. I personally wouldn't reccomend it but if you have had good success with other forms of birth control in the past, no excessive weight gain or anything then go for it but it was a disaster for me.

I've had mine for almost a year. I had a fairly normal period for about 4 months and now I barely have one at all. Maybe one or two days of spotting every couple of months. The only strage effect I've had is that I get uteran cysts every few months but that has happened with every form of birth control I've ever been on so I don't know how much of it to contribute to this particular one. All in all I've had a very pleasant experince with mine and I don't think I'll ever use anything else. Good Luck!

I have a Mirena IUD. It is my first experience with an IUD. I love it. I don't have to worry about anything. Plus, I have not bled at all since getting it. Every now and then I might get signs of starting my period, but it never comes. By signs I mean slight cramps for a day and that is pretty much it. I haven't really had any bad experiences with it. I have had it for close to a year now.

I have had the Mirena for almost 3 years and I haven't had any problems with it. My periods are so light I barely notice them. I have always had headaches and that really hasn't changed, although I don't know if they would be considered hormonal migraines. I've had a great experience. I have friends that have had more issues with them falling out and long periods but I thinkm it depends on the person.

Bad bad experience. It hurt like heck going in and I had strange pains in my abdomen for weeks. Something didn't feel right. I couldn't find my string. Then I had an ultrasound and the doctor had perforated my uterus and the IUD was floating around inside my belly. I had to have surgery to remove it. Terrible. I'd never consider it again.

I used a IUD, but I forgot the name but it is the copper IUD. This one does not have any hormones. I liked it! I used to get so cranky when I was on hormones. Plus the copper IUD you can keep in for 10 years, compared to the Mirena IUD which is 5 years. I had a friend that liked the Mirena also, she never had a period while she had it in her. I do recommend having an IUD, I had a good experience and know of many who also like it. Hope this helps!

I was put on the Mirena IUD because I kept bleeding heavy after I stopped breast feeding my 2 daughter in March of 06, so finaly in November of 06 they decided to try the IUD...it was great at first. I cramped a little for the first week and then was totaly fine for about 2 weeks. Then I could count on severe headaches at least 3 times a week and a single headache could last 2 days. And I rarely got headaches before the IUD. So a MONTH after getting it inserted, my CNP decided that we needed to take it out, and after that no more headaches. and my bleeding finally became controlled. my CNP said that she knew a side effect was headaches but none of her patients had had them as severe and/or as often as I did and she would start telling other women about it. Just something to think about

Hi K.- I have the Mirena IUD and I love it!! The placement of it was easy for me although I had heard from some of my friends that the pain made them almost pass out. I got the IUD last June and I think I have had only one or two periods. I have heard good and bad about it but my experience has been great!! Also, the hormones are only on the IUD so only 1% of them actually make it into your blood system, which was great for me because the pill always made me a little crazy!!

I have had the mirena iud for three years now and I just love it. At first it was a little scary because I would think that I was pregnant when I missed. But now I just spot every few months. It's wonderful you should go for it.

Hi K.~
I know you had the Mirena put in, but I wanted to share my story. I had the Mirena put in back in June of last year. I spotted until sometime around October. In November I was rushed to the hospital because I was bleeding so heavy and having bad stomach pains. I found out I had a tubal pregnancy. My doctor told me I was the first person he has ever heard of getting pregnant on the Mirena, but I've talked to several other women that have said they had a tubal pregnancy with the Mirena. After having surger to remove the tubal, my doctor put me back on the pill and I got pregnant again a couple months later. I guess maybe it was just my time:) I personally have heard better things about the copper IUD and I think that's what I'm going to try after this baby gets here. I only have one tube left, so hopefully I don't have anymore tubals! Hope you have success with the Mirena!

I had the Mirena placed after my first baby in Feb this year and I love it! I had been on the pill for 9 years due to bad cramping, heavy periods and like you, migraines. I reluctantly decided to get the IUD because I really did not want an unplanned pregnancy. The worst part was having it placed. It was worse than childbirth (but I had a very easy delivery). The pain lasted about 3 minutes and I was faint for about a half hour afterwards. I think it was because of the dr placing it though. I spotted for about 4 weeks after and have not had a period since (2 1/2 months). Sometimes when my daughter jumps on my stomach while playing, I'll get a cramping sensation, but that is all the evidence that it is there. My doctor also told me that I don't have to check for strings once and month as suggested. She says if it is malpositioned (after the follow up exam) I would know. It will either fall out or I would be in excrutiating pain and know that something was wrong. I did get migraines the first few weeks after it was placed. I haven't had one since. I would reccomend it to anyone. It is easily removed (so I hear) if you change your mind.

I have loved the Mirena IUD. I have one little boy that is 18 months old and used a IUD before we decided it was time to have a child - but it wasn't the mirena. It was still great but it gave me a really heavy "flow" for about 2 days and that was miserable! I got the mirena after my son was born in 2005 and have loved it. I only have a little spotting during my period for about 2-3 days and no other side effects. It goes in really easy with mild cramping and I just had it removed and it just felt like a lot of pressure for a few seconds. I recommend it to all my friends and hope you like it as much as I have. Good Luck!

I have the hormonal IUD and it seems to be working well. I unfortunately have continued to spot since I've had it (2 months) which isn't all the time and is just annoying to me.
A girlfriend of mine has migraines like crazy and has not been able to use the pill or any hormonal birth control, and got the copper IUD and has been doing great...no migraines.

Hi K.,

I have one; first inserted early Sep, then fell out early Feb (if it's within 3 months they'll replace it for free) and had another one inserted. They say most women stop having periods after 6 months but I still have just enough to have to wear a panty liner every day so that's kind of a bummer. I am definitely done and my husband had a vasectomy but my periods were so extremely heavy and painful this was my last resort before a hysterectomy. It's probably a better choice than the pill since the hormones stay right "down there" (don't flow throughout your blood/body) so maybe it would also rid your migraines. Good luck!

I got Mirena back in August and my experience has been just fine. During the first month it was irregular spotting but after that I have not had any menstrual cycles since then. I haven't had any side effects and it has been 9-10 months now. The only thing I did not like about it was that it was uncomfortable during the process but it works great!

I am 33 and had a Mirena placed 2 years ago after my second child. My periods are so light and sometimes I get lucky and don't even have one! I would do it agian and highly recommend one. The only downside is the 10 minutes of PAIN and cramping during insertion. Take some pain reliever before your appointment. The two weeks following you may also have cramping and spotting. Good luck!

I wore my Mirena for two and a half years. I had it put in 3 months after delivery of my second daughter. I had it removed last summer and was pregnant within 6 weeks. I also have monthly migraines, that always happened the day before I started my period, but once I had the Mirena I think I only had one the whole two and a half years I had it. I had problems with bleeding when I was nursing my daughter but after that I was lucky enough and didn't bleed at all. I will definately use the Mirena after this pregnancy. :)

I just recently got the Mirena IUD, in April. I have never really had bad periods, occasionally some cramping but nothing too terrible. Since I got the IUD I have had almost constant spotting. It is really frustrating to bleed this often but I am hoping my periods stop all together in the future, and if they do this will be worth putting up with.

HI K.,
I've had the Merina IUD for almost two years and I love it. It caused pretty bad cramps and some spotting after it was put in but aside from that it's been great. I still have my period monthly but it's so light that I almost don't need anything and it only lasts for like 2-3 days. I do also get cramps and some of the moodyness monthly but it's pretty minor compared to what I did had to go through before. I was on the pill when my son was concieved so being on this has been a real relief for me. It's definately worth the price.

I got a Mirena IUD about 2 years ago and I LOVE it! It was inserted in my Drs office, it was mildly uncomfortable but not more than the annual exam. The first day I had light spotting and mild cramps. The first few months I did get light periods, but they have completely vanished. I do occasionally spot, but it is so light that I dont even deal with it. It was really the best choice for me. Good Luck!

However every month like clockwork I would get all the other symptoms of PMS but not the period. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hey K., you should read my post before getting it. I've had mine for 3 years and absolutely LOVED it, but I just went in to get it removed and it's embedded (it poked it's arm through my uterus) and now I have to pay $5k to have it surgerically removed, or around $1k to do it in office (which does not sound fun to be awake for actually, even though it's way cheaper.) The pamphlet said the chance of this happening was 1 in 20,000 or something really slim, but it's got to happen more often than that. Up until this happened I had been recommending it to all of my friends though. I didn't have a period at all for all those years, it was SO great. Also, it was so nice to be spontaneous again without worry. One of my friends got it also on my prompting, but had to have it removed within 4 months because she was bleeding heavily non-stop. So it's definately different for everyone. If you do get it, I would seriously recommend 2 things - go back in 3 month after insertion and have them check via ultrasound that it is in the right place, and 2) check the string faithfully every single month after mensus to make sure it stays in the right place. I didn't do either of these things and might have saved myself this nightmare if I had. Sigh. Good luck!
