I recently had an IUD (mirena) put in. I had a very bad experience and now I am considering removing it before I have more complications. Does anyone have any negative or positive feedback?

What can I do next?

I recently had an IUD put in as well. I have a 3 month old and was breat feeding and hadn't had a menstrual cycle until 3 days after I had the IUD put in. (3 weeks ago) I have yet to stop bleeding. I went to my Dr. for the 2 week check on the IUD. She said everything was ok and the bleeding will go away. It just seems very strange to me to be bleeding that long and not have something wrong. I am interested to know what bad experience you have had.. Just so I can be on the lookout. J.

i also have an IUD (mirena) I had it put in 6 weeks after my daughter was born. I had a little spotting and then nothing. Its been that way for a year now. The doctor says I'm one of the lucky ones. I guess she means because I havent had a period. Its a bit odd that I dont have one but thats what I expected. The thing I dont like is that I have to check to see if the string is there. I dont look for it but I should. What type of bad experiences have you had with it? I was also thinking about getting mine removed. Please send me an email if possible.

I had the same IUD put in and had a bad experience as well. A month or two after I had it put in, I had bad cramping and it came out. Not a fun experience. I decided not to put another one back in. This was four years ago or so.

I would get it out ASAP. The string came out of my IUD and it got embedded in the wall of my uterus, VERY painful, and the surgery to have it removed wasn't covered by my health insurance.

I've had mine for two months now and, except for the spotting, I have had no problems.

I had an IUD put in about four months ago and my doctor said that I would possably have irregular periods the first three months. OH boy did I it seemed like I was spotting everyday! I haven't had a period in almost 2 months now and evrything has settled down. The only thing is that my husband says that it pokes him, does anyone else have this problem?

So far so good with mine, I got it in May at my 6 week post partum. My first few cycles were a little weird and I did spot the first 6 weeks on and off. More of a nuisance of not being prepared...out and about without pantyliners type of annoyances.

What kinds of problems if you don't mind me asking? Maybe it wasn't inserted correctly or something???

I have one other friend who has it and she loves it as well and our experiences were very similar w/spotting. I don't even think about having it most the time.

I hate to hear you are having a problem as I was thrilled to learn about it. I can't do the pill, and i had alot of issues on the shot and will try and talk everyone out of that-esp if thinking of having more kids- so this has been a real blessing...nothing to think about for 5 years unless we want another kiddo and then no wait (supposedly) if that were to come up. So I have to rave about it.

I hope your issues were isolated, but glad you brought this up, just to see if others had different experiences as I am sold on it...SO FAR...

I had the mirena IUD put in 6 weeks after i had my son. I have had it for over a year and i love it! At first, it was uncomfortable and I had cramps and spotted for 2 months. But I stuck it out, and now it is perfect. I have no effects, no cramps and when i have my period, it last for maybe a day with no cramps or other effects! Also, my father in law and uncle are doctors, and along with my ob-gyn, they said that the depo shot is good, but after 2 years of use, it causes osteoporosis and bone loss in prolonged use. So, thats something else to consider!

I am sorry but have heard nothing but bad things about it. My friend last year got pregnant with the iud in place, then it caused her to have a pretty violent misscarrage. My OB won't even do them because he feels the risks outweigh the rewards. I have had too many friends get them then regret it later. I have heard alot of people say their periods get much worse after the iud was inserted. another friend told me that she spotted non-stop.
all ultimatly had it removed.
My dr. reccomended the Depo shot over the iud. he really reccomends minimal invasive BC, but some people just hate having to think about it every day so that is what he suggested.

good luck with your decision. It may be a good idea to do some research on the internet too. check out webmd.com or the ivillage message boards. i think they have one on there for IUD or former IUD users.

I don't have one but my sister does. She complains about it ALL the time. She had it put in after her first child so she's had it for two years. I think she will be getting it removed here soon. She said she will go months with no period than- WHAM- spotting for two months straight. Horrible cramps too.

I had that one put in about 3 years ago and it's wonderful. For the first few months I'd have these horrible cramps all of a sudden out of nowhere but that went away and so did my monthly cycle. I haven't had any problems with it at all since then.

I had my IUD put in a little over a year ago. For the first 6-7 months I had horrable cramping and what felt like something stabbing me threw my insides. I went to the Dr. and she said it's normal and it's adjusting to my body. She even gave me a sonogram just to be sure. After that everything is great! My advise to you is talk to your Dr. about your thoughts, and you'd like something done such as a sonogram to ease your mind from the worst! Also stay on top of those check ups once a year!!! Good Luck to you on what ever you decide

Hugs,
A.

Hey D.!

I've had the same thing for 5 months now. I love it! I am having irregular periods and some spotting but I havent had any other complications at all. I tried the pill, and kept forgetting to take it. Then tried the patch it was great till after I had my son then it kept coming off! Then I tried the Nuva ring, it was ok. I just didnt like the idea of having to remember to put it back in after my period!! It was kind of like the pill. Sorry to hear you are having problems!! If you dont mind, I would like to know what kind of problems you are having.

I also have a Mirena. My question is how long have you had it in? It can take your body 3-6 months to fully adjust, but after that it is great! My period lasts less than a day, and is really only light spotting. I have had mine for 6 months, my first 3 were awful, but I am very good friends with a nurse at my gyno's office and she explained to me that it takes a little while to adjust to it. It is totally your decision, but if it has been less than 6 months, i would recomend you sticking it out a little longer!
