It's Still Itchy

Ok.. I know I've asked before.. but, my dd still complains about an itch!
We've discontinued the bath soap, no undies at night, and we've consulted her ped to be told nothing is wrong... tests came back fine.

I feel really bad not being able to make it stop itch/hurt. Could it just be that she is becoming aware of herself? Would something like vagisil help? It looks like it's her clitoris that is bothering her.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the replies..

So, yesterday we went to Target. We ended up buying disposable wipes (for hemorrhoids/vaginal itching)and diaper rash cream. I showed her how to wipe properly, and to put the cream down there. Since she loves being independent and "in the know" she has not complained since. I did however ask how it was going.. and 'much better' what the reply.
What I was thinking is that she was exploring herself, aggravated it and started the cycle. We also got new panties.. I did notice they were getting a little small, too.

Woo-hoo. Problem (it was for her!) solved.

Thanks for all the good advise! (Especially to the woman who said to put the 'special' cream by the johnny...)

Have you tried using diaper cream? My daughter is 5 and some times doesn't wipe as well as she should and she gets irritated. I put some diaper cream on where it is red and it usually goes away over night.

My daughter had a very similar itch. We had it checked and was told it was nothing. But she continued to itch and I felt so bad for her!
Our pediatrician finally told us that we could use Bacitracin ointment. She can safely use as much as she needs and can apply it herself when she feels like it's needed.
I never did figure out what the itch was, maybe it was just dry? But even months later she will still occasionally say she needs to use the ointment. I keep it in a drawer by the toilet and she can use it when she wants to.
I hope this helps.

Yogurt, yogurt, yogurt! It helps prevent yeast infections at any age. Cotton and as much natural air-flow as possible. Wet wipes with no dyes or perfumes. Laundry soaps with no dyes or perfumes either.

Think of any of the things she does in a day. It may be that she's curious. It may also be that she is exposed to something that you're not thinking of.

Sorry I can't come up with more but good luck!

Find out what kinds of test they ran. Then talk to an OB or a pediatrician that specializes in girls?? I don't think vagisil could hurt. Is there yeast? Does she need a different kind of wipe? Perhaps she is bothered by her urine and needs to use a cottonelle wipe. The more she bothers with it, the more it will itch. I remember being little and mine would itch. Then I would scratch and it would just get worse until I left it alone. Rinse well at night and find out from your doctor what you may be able to use to desensitise the area. It may just need time to heal. Does she scratch it and rub it a lot? That area down there is sooo sensitive and the more it itches, the more she itches and so on and it is an endless cycle. Ask your doctor if there is a hydrocortizone product that you can use.

My four year old daughter was having the same issues. I have found that putting some A&D ointment or vaseline at night before bed is helping. Our pediatrician also said to watch the baths and soaps but it was still happening. Since all this my daughter is doing better, I also bought some flushable wipes for in the bathroom. I hope some of this helps your daughter... they seem like two peas in a pod!!! Good Luck!

Sounds like a yeast infection!!! My daughter gets one (same symptoms) if I give her too many sweets or white flour products (which turn to sugars in the body). Try giving her a probiotic such as yum-yum dopholis ($14 whole foods) every day until it clears. And try to stay away from sugary foods and white flour! Very common problem.

Wow! It seems as though many people are having the same problem! I find it odd that the doctors don't immediately tell you to give probiotics which usually clears my daughter's up in a day ! There are many probiotic products at whole foods. Sugar (white sugar, brown sugar, white flour, etc) is the culprit!!!!! The other things may help a bit but you should get to the root of the problem no?

My daughter is having the same issue. I recently bought "free" laundry detergent and fabric softener to do her underwear in, but haven't used it yet (we just got back from vacation). I also feel that her wiping after using the bathroom is not as good as it could be, and she's still in pull-ups at night, which might be exacerbating the problem. It is frustrating when the doctor says there's nothing wrong.

I know I had some issues years ago and switched to all-cotton underwear, no underwear at night, and 'free' laundry detergent, and that helped a lot.

Good luck!

This has actually happened to me as an adult. Nothing wrong per Dr. but I still have the itch. After the shower I use a hair dryer down there, on low and use the gentle baby soap. Also, the sugar thing is tied to it somehow as well. If I go off sugar then it seems to clear up. It's almost like the itch before the infection. Try the vagisil if it makes her feel better then I'd use it.

have you tried supplemental probiotics?? she may just be "yeasty" and needs to replenish with good bacteria. This is much more common than you think. Also too much white flour, sugar and breads can be detrimental. You can get probiotics at any health food store. It's worth a try, perfectly safe, will help with digestion and a healthy immune system!

Hi there!
Have you tried Aquaphor? My 3 year old is constantly saying the same-I have been told by pedi to put Lotrimine cream (jock itch cream) on at bed so it has time to work. I have had better results with the Aquaphor at night-works great if consistant. She is probably telling you the truth-even though it's not totally visable their potty habits can sometimes be crazy with learning how to wipe properly and staying dry.

Best of luck with the little lady!

Emu oil works wonders for itching. It's a natural anti-inflammatory and has no nasty chemicals or potential side effects (unless of course you are allergic to poultry!). I get mine from www.laidinmt.com - it's expensive but a few drops are all you need, so it goes a long way.

Also, if this keeps up you may want to check in with a gynecologist who is knowledgeable of vulvar skin disorders. They are rare in children but there is a skin disorder of the vulva called lichen sclerosis that causes itching and skin discoloration and can get nasty if left untreated. It doesn't sound like that, but I wanted to give you the heads up in case it doesn't go away and you can't figure out what it is!

My neighbor's daughter had a similar problem. They went to a pediatric gynocologist and she told them to clean the area with Cetaphil and pat it dry. That's all I remember about it and it cleared up. You may want to consider a specialist. Hope this helps a little

If you really think there is a yeast thing going on, I would try a little tea tree essential oil. It is one of the few oils that can be used directly on the skin without a carrier. Or try mixing several drops in a squirt bottle and have her squirt herself before drying with the toilet paper. Yogurt works well too, as someone else mentioned. If it looks like her clitoris, is it possible she's fighting a mild UTI?
