Diaper Rash with Bumps?

My 21 month old has developed a bad diaper rash today. It is little red bumps and she says it itches. Is this a yeast infection? she does not have a discharge. I use A&D ointment on her but this does not seem to be helping. We battle diaper rash any time I introduce something new. She had one two weeks ago because I thought I could switch her to lactose-free milk from soy but that did not work so we are back to soy. i have been adding some chocolate mix to it so she would drink more milk. Maybe that is it.
Any one had this happen to their baby before? If it is yeast do i need to get a prescription from the doctor?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I laid off of the milk today(Thursday) and the rash seems much better. Just on her buttocks and not too bad. I did give her the organic milk, since this is what my oldest drinks but she had a terrible rash with it. I think I will have to go back to just regular vanilla soy like we have been doing. I am going to try the yeast cream tommorrow.Update Sunday- I used the monistate cream 4% several times and it worked great. Also laid off the chocalte milk and went back to just vanilla soy milk. Now I know for sure she can't handle regular milk. She has to be a little lactose intolerant. Makes since because all of my husband;s family is.Thanks to to everyone!!

This sounds like a yeast infection, they wont have any discharge like we do when we get one. I have 3 girls and this sounds like what their yeast infections did when they would get one. She needs some nystatin cream. You will have to take her to the Dr to get it, cant buy it over the counter. Good luck.

My little girl has gotten bad diaper rash usually around teething. The dr. gave an antifungal cream called Nistatin (i think that's how it's spelled.) A friend said her dr. said you could also use a mild lotion with Lotrimin powder sprinkled on top. The powder is also used for athlete's foot, so I guess the antifungal propertiess are what's key.

I let her run around and nap w/out her diaper to air her out.

good luck

I believe your daughter’s rash is from a yeast infection, even without discharge. A&D ointment won’t fix it because you have to treat it internally. You can however go ahead and use vagiseal in place of the ointment topically for comfort. My kids got a few yeast infections when they were younger. It happens especially if they have had antibiotics in the last 6 months to 1 year! When we put them on antibiotics, it kills the good and bad bacteria in their intestinal tract. You have to rebuild the good bacteria back. Many people recommend yogurt from the store. However many over the counter yogurt have dead cultures of Acidophilus (the good bacteria). SO… go to the health food store. You can buy capsules of Acidophilus, or for children they have something called Premadophilus (designed for children in loose powder forum). The capsules still work because you can open them and slip it in juice or milk. Do this for about 2 weeks even after symptoms go away. You will have to refrigerate this product. I keep some on hand at all times and any time we have been on antibiotics I give this for a couple of weeks after. I have had success with this with my 4 children and myself and now my husband’s grandma also!!! Let me know if I can help you with any other questions! I will be MORE than happy to help!!! Best of luck!!!! P.S. I also use this if we have low immune systems. Also, I don’t recommend any Soy product to children, people with Thyroid challenges or anyone that has had cancer!!! I use rice products instead. I can’t figure out why people still recommend soy. It’s a very high allergen for children and cause complications for adults with those other challenges. Stay away from soy on a regular basis if you can!

My baby boy had a diaper rash also with little red dots. My doctor told me to give him probiotics (there is a kind that says CHILDRENS on it at the healthfood store)
Within 2 days it was completely gone and has never returned, I still give him the probiotics everyday.

Watch the soy milk. Soy products really are not good unless they are fermented, like tofu, misu and tempeh.

Also keep the SUGAR down in your babys diet. Cut out the chocolate for sure. Yeast THRIVES off of sugar.

Medication is always the first option it seems for everything. Being into natural health I believe in CURING the REASON for the issue instead of just covering it up. My doctor is a MD with a holistic backround as well. That situation with the diaper rash proved to me that natural remedies can cure a lot of problems.

Hope it goes away soon!

Well, first for a regular diaper rash my pediatrican recommended mixing Maalox with cornstarch, it is very soothing and does not hurt. It should have be the consistency of elmer's glue.
2nd, the rash you describe could possibly be impetaigo. My son had it, and was treated w/ a topical antibiotic.
Hope this helps.

I can't tell you what it is, but do try Butt Paste - works well on my son. Also, his ped. suggested mixing BP or any diaper cream with Mylanta (or Maalox) into a creamy paste.

Hi T.,
It just sounds to me she has a nasty rash--and even if it is a little yeasty, the same thing will cure both--keeping it clean and dry. (Yeast can't survive without wetness). So after cleaning it, let it air dry as much as possible then cover that baby with your favorite diaper rash cream (I like Destin creamy, just because it's easy to put on and gently comes of and not ridiculously expensive)--but they all accomplish the same thing which is a moisture barrier. The rash need to be dry to heal.
The reason you usually get an Rx for yeast infections is for areas that you can't keep dry. For example, women's yeast infections--can't really put a moisture barrier there--lol. But surface ones, can be treated with just keeping them dry with any sort of moisture barrier (diaper rash cream, Vaseline, etc--depending on your preference and any sensitivities your daughter may have).
oh yes, and adding yogurt or other pro-biotics to her diet (buttermilk is also a pro-biotic) may help with the initial onset since she seems to have some food sensitivities.

When diaper rash looks like "raw meat" as my pediatrician put it, then it has developed into a fungus. I would touch base with your pediatrician. There are prescriptions to help or even over the counter anti-fungal ie. Lotrimin. The best thing I have ever used is good old fashion cornstarch direct from the box in your kitchen. We battled it a lot when my kids were little usually associated with trying new fruits because of the acidity. Good luck.

My son is 23 months old and got a yeast infection from taking antibiotics. I tried the Lotrimin Ultra with Aquaphor (not sure of spelling) but it didn't work, so my pediatrician gave me a prescription for a cream to use 3 times a day. You may want to see your pediatrician for him/her to advise though. But it certainly sounds like a yeast infection. Also let her run free around the house with no diaper, especially after a diaper change or bath; to air out.

Yes this is a form of yeast. There is some other things other than perscription you can try. Try mixing zinc and hydrocotisone together and applying to the area. If that doesn't work see your doctor for something stronger. My daughter would get these anytime she was on antibiotics. Hope this helps.

Hi T. B. Not sure if its yeast, but these things help with yeast in the body: Avoid sugars (even fruit while trying to heal) Eat plain yogurt or take probiotics. My local health food store sells it in a powdered form you can mix in water and have your child drink. Our bodies are succeptable to yeast when we have too much sugar in our bodies or when something like antibiotics messes up your population of good bacteria in your gut. With kids in diapers of course the yeast loves the warm moist environment. Air it out as much as you can. Good way to initiate potty training! You probably don't need to see a doctor about it.

Sounds like a yeast infection, which is apparently at the root of diaper rash. My twelve-week old daughter got a bad one this week, and I called her doctor about it yesterday. The nurse told me to use Desitin on her, and it's really been helping a lot. She also suggested that I soak her in a tea bath 3-4 times a day. I've just put about two or three inches of warm water in the kitchen sink, along with four tea bags and let it soak until it looked good and strong. Then, I've sat her in it for about ten minutes, patted her down, and let her air dry on top of a bunch of towels in case she pees. Good luck!

Hello! I don't know if what your baby has is a yeast infection, but I can tell you what worked best for my daughter. I used Lansinoh (the breast ointment for breast feeding moms) and it did wonders! I applied it before the diaper cream and worked well. My daughter has only had one bad diaper rash. When I noticed her getting a little red I would immediately apply Lansinoh and it would clear quickly.
Good luck!

Sounds kinda weird, but my son had a yeast infection once. I always use desitin diaper rash cream. It burns at first, but after a few seconds he's fine. This seems to work much better than A&D for us. My dr also told us to by a over the counter yeast infection cream once which worked really well. I would say that if the desitin doesn't clear it up after a solid day of applying it after every diaper change, then I would call the dr. They will have a prescription strength antibiotic cream at the dr office, mine had samples which worked very well. Hope this is helpful!!
Oh, if she is saying that it itches then it may be yeast.

If it's a yeast infection you can use the same over the counter stuff that you would use, just double check with the pharmacist. You are not going to put anything internally, it will used on the outside only. For diaper rash I always use Triple Paste, it is the only thing that I have found to work and it works quick. It is a little bit more expensive than the others but it is the best. Hope this helps.

Hi T.,

I agree with Annica and Amy above. If it is yeast, a cream won't do any good. Yeast is systemic which means if it is in her vaginal area, her body is eaten up with it. The only way to rid her body is a probiotic and taking away the sugar. Sugar feeds yeast and it is in so much that we eat today, even baby formula. Unless you get rid of it completely, it will just keep coming back. (Which you said every time you change something you get a new rash.)Prescriptions just help in the vaginal canal and it will keep coming back if it is yeast.

A&D also has so much petroleum in it that it clogs the pores and can actually make it worse and spread. I also agree with Annica about the Soy. I wish I had known when my girls were little as I gave them soy as well. There is too much phytoestrogens for little ones. It can cause problems down the road. (Also most manufacturers add sugar to the soy to make it taste better.) I thought my daughter was lactose intolerant for the longest time and then realized that she was just reacting to the chemicals in the milk. She can drink organic cow's milk just fine.

I use Melaleuca products that have a wonderful probiotic/prebiotic that is okay for babies and also the melaleuca oil that Melaleuca carries is not caustic (T36-C5) so would help on her bumps whether it is yeast or fungus like Jock itch. There is also a product called Tough and Tender that can be used in a bath. (My 15 year old has yeast occasionally and she sits in a T&T bath and it is soothing) If you go to the health food store, the higher the T number and the lower the C number is the better. Melaleuca also carries T40-C3. Make sure you ask about the amount your child should have by age and weight....

I hope this helps. If you would like to know more please let me know..

Regards,

M.

I wouldn't suggest giving chocolate to young kids...in the hopes to get them to "like" milk. My daughter hasn't drank a lot of milk since the switch from bottle to cup...she said it's not where it belongs...so finally, buying a straw bowl and having her sip it with her cereal is what got her excited about drinking milk again. She eats enough cheese, yogurt, etc. for calcium to not be an issue...The diaper rash...have your pediatrician look at it. I recommend aquaphor (even the generic aquaphor works). Also, after diaper changes, we always dried with a clean washcloth after wiping with a wet wipe as to not keep moisture in the diaper. Our twins are 3 now and potty training...so I'm hoping to be over this hurdle soon and I hope my advice helps some. God bless you.

Try Triple Paste. It has no burning effects and soothes right away. Most rashes are gone in just a few hours. Also my daughter told me she just tried the stuff by Aveeno (less costly than Triple Paste) and it worked wonders on her son. Some children are more susceptible to diet changes than others. I never went through it but two of my grandchildren get a rash any time a new food is introduced. The allergist told my daughter not to worry unless that particular food does it every time the child eats it.

My daughter got a yeast infection every time a diaper rash lasted longer than a couple days. You can get Rx cream from the dr. that clears it up in a few days, but you have to be sure to use it as long as the pediatrician says, or else it will flare up again. Also, if she's been diagnosed with one before, you could possibly just call the nurse and have the Rx called in to the pharmacy. The over-the-counter (i.e. vagisil) stuff works fine for minor infections, but DO NOT give it internally. There's no telling what damage could be done. Just get the old fashioned kind that comes in a giant tube and apply the cream every time you change the diaper. I would use the 3 day monistat because it had a higher concentration of the stuff that cures it. Also, I discovered yogurt and acidophilus for kids helped my daughter tremendously in preventing them. She's now 3 and has not had any infections since she's been potty trained. Hope this helps. I know it's not fun!

Hi T.,

My son used to get terrible diaper rashes - the bumps would even bleed. The only thing that ever worked was Butt Paste (I think it's Bourdeaux's Butt Paste), none of the others would work.

If it is yeast, the Butt Paste will most likely take care of it. If you do start to notice an odor, take her to her ped.

Good luck

T.- That happened to my son once, and oddly enough, the doctor said it was "jock itch"! Too funny! My son's also had some raised bumps, and he kept trying to scratch it. The doctor told us to use Lotrimin AF on it, and it worked great. I wonder if you could use the same thing? Maybe call your doctor and ask? I wouldn't want you to try it on her unless the doctor okayed it. Good luck!
