Hey all. I'm always giving advice, now I need a little. I took a home preg. test about a month ago and guess what??? Positive! Well, now I am a tired, queezy(sp?) mess! I never had one day of morning sickness with my first and I really don't know what to do to curb the queezyness. I'm eating crackers by the pound and I can barely stand to take my vitamins. The only time I feel ok is when I'm almost full but not too full from eating. Can y'all give me some suggestions on what to eat/drink for that sick tummy feeling? I don't do soda so Sprite/7-Up are out. I guess not having a 3 year old the last time helped a bit too because I was never this tired either! HELP!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW!! I never expected to receive so many helpful hints for a nasty-feeling tummy. I have found that the Braum's limeade (without syrup) does help quite a bit. I have lots of shopping to do this weekend (gotta try those preggie pops and some of the more natural remedies too). Thanks, everyone, for your help and hopefully I can help you guys out one day as much as you've helped me.--Gina

PS.---I think I know why things are so different this time. I found out yesterday that there's 2 of 'em in there!! Ok--now I'll need to make a separate request for help with multiples! Isn't life a trip?

Wow! I know how you feel! I didn't have any problem with my first daughter..but then I found out I was pregnant with twins! I tried taking my prenatals at night, so you sleep thru the first part...My friend also suggested lemons. When she was in the hospital they gave her lemons to eat and it helped with her nausea. Also grocery stores sell ginger root, I know this might sound weird...but cut some off and chew on it...It worked great!

I hope you find sonething that works for you! Congrats and good luck!

Gina,
I know it's hard being sick like that. I was that way with my first. Sun up to sun down. What I lived on was something called Emetrol(reccomended by my OBGYN). It's main ingredient is Fructose syrup which is also in soda which is why ppl tell you to drink soda when you are queezy. You can get it at any pharmacy and most places have a generic so it's a little cheaper. I reccomend the cherry b/c the lemon stuff made me want to throw up even more. ;) Good luck and let me know if it works for you.

Preggie Pops helped me. I found them in my doc's pharmacy when I was pregnant. That was in Los Angeles, not sure if they're sold everywhere here, but here's the web address http://www.threelollies.com/ I was queasy 100% of the time and nothing ever really took it away, but the preggie pops did help and kept me (for a few minutes anyway) from stuffing my face. Good luck!!

Try so Chinese Ginger Tea or Ginger Candy. It helped me when I was suffering through my morning sickness. You will need to find it at an Asain Grocery Store. You could also try anything with Ginger in it.

Well as you know each PG is different. Something that worked for me, isn't anything the Dr suggested. Bt when I felt queezy I would have a cup of crushed ice rom Sonic or Quik Trip.

It reallly helped. If it helped you can buy a bag of crushed ice from either QT or sonic I think QT is cheaper.
Just ask the cashier if you can get a bag of crushed ice.
They don't pre-bag it but you can buy it. All we did was ask.
My husband would get a bag a week, the Manger said he had about 6 husbands that would come in and get bag of ice all for there PG wifes. It was funny I wasn't the only one.

It also helped with the water intake you need when your PG. I like water but without the ice I had, I don't know I have enough consumed. Anyways I would take a large QT cup to work and have it through the day.

As well as have snacks it helped from getting sick to my stomach. I take cheese in Pre-sliced package, fruit cut up, and Ritz crackers.

Maybe this will help !

I was sick the entire 9 months. I tried everything, ginger... nothing worked. I tried all prescriptions and the only thing that worked was Zofran (super expensive).

Things that can help you feel better, crackers with peanut butter or cheese (eating crackers alone can make your body crash), bananas, rice, baked potato, toast, bagels, pretzels, apples dipped in peanut butter...

And to help ease quesiness, jello cups, pudding cups, ice cream, SOnic's Lemon Berry cream slush and snow cones/smoothies.

Oh, do NOT drink large quantities of liquid all at once or while eating. It will come right back up!! Instead, drink a LOT, but evenly through out the day, so you are never thirsty.

And, eat a lot of fruit throughout the day as well, string cheese, and about 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals.

Good Luck!

In the meantime, these things may help keep your stomach in check:

Steer clear of certain odors that may trigger your nausea.
Keep crackers or dry toast by your bed to nibble on before getting up.
Eat frequent small meals to keep your stomach from becoming empty.
Avoid eating foods that are fatty, greasy, spicy, or acidic if you find that they bother you.
Eat whatever foods you can tolerate while your stomach's upset. When you feel better later, concentrate on making your meals more well-rounded.
If your prenatal vitamin seems to worsen your nausea, take it with food instead of on an empty stomach. If this does not help, talk to your doctor (or other health care provider) about the possibility of switching to a different vitamin.
hope this help

I had this same question at the first of this pregnancy... so I feel for you!!!!!

- Sonic ice and their fresh lemon slushes
- lemons
- preggi pops you can get at Motherhood maternity
- basically anything sour, I even got to where I would sip pickle juice. I know it's gross, but it helped.
- I did drink gingerale at times, but I don't care for sodas either
- drink plenty of water
- quaker oatmeal squares by the bed - I hate saltines

You really have to find what works for you. I couldn't eat much, so my dr suggested I drink boost. That helped too.

Get plenty of rest and keep your feet up as much as possible! Good luck - you will get over this hump. I am currently 6 weeks away from delivery (C-section). I am back to the sleepy stage.

*hugs*

Oh boy do I feel for you!! I did this with all 3 of my pregnancies, and have figured out a few key thing that worked for me. I liked nuts, esp. pistacios (sp?). Anything salty really, pretzels, chips, popcorn (not buttery). And popsicles, snowcones, or frozen drinks. I always wanted lemon with cherry, as plain cherry is too sweet. If you live close to a Burger Street, they have the best frozen drinks!! And watermelon was a real life saver. You are getting water without even realizing it. I could not tolerate water really well, and when I could, it had to be bottled water, room temperature. I had to stay away from milk and cereal, but liked wheat bagels, or english muffins for breakfast. Honestly, my best advice is eat what you want, whenever you think you want it. Even if it is more french fries. I never could really tolerate vitamins well, so more often than not, I did not take them, and my kids all survived, but you can also ask your dr. for some that are easier to take. Good luck, you will make it through! ~A.~

I understand how you are feeling. There was a point when i was pregnant with my little one that i all of a sudden got REALLY sick i could not keep down anything at all not even water. My family and at the time fiance, now my hubby, where all very worried. I had no insurance and they where all about to take me to the emergency room when my mom had me try this herbal tea. It is by celestial Seasonings and it is cinnamon apple spice. My mom handed me a mug of it with 4 teaspoons of sugar and told me to sip it VERY slowly. it ended up being the first thing in over 36 hours i had been able to keep down. and after that any time i started to feel a little quesy in the morning i would drink some. (my mom gave me a box when my hubby and i got married so that i would have it at home for my last 5 months of being pregnant.)

I could not do saltines - I found that animal crackers helped better for me or if I couldnt keep those down and had a few bucks carribian way smoothie from the smoothie king helped me feel a little better. With my daughter it was all day all night for 7 months so I was worried about not being able to take my vitamins all the time. Fortuntaly my doc reminded me that woman had healty babies without them for years so not to worry to much and to take 1 chewable flinstone vitamin 3 times a day when I could and that if or when my sickness went away I could go back to the others when I felt ready. This time around sucking on peppermint candies like those little star mints really helped me a lot too and gingersnap cookies seemed to help too. I know its a pain - thankfully it will end at some point. Good luck. :)

I am the queen of bad pregnancies. I was in the hospital twice with my first for dehydration and threw up almost every day multiple times until the day he delivered. I was bed ridden for the first 4 months with my second on an IV at home after getting so dehydrated that I almost miscarried. Ginger is a natural soother for your stomach. Gingerale is wonderful. They have ginger flavored Altoids and even suckers for pregnant women. Applesauce is a good thing and oatmeal is heavy so it stays down well. Tip #1: Eat something (crackers, Cherrios, etc) before your feet even touch the floor in the morning. Just keep them next to your bed. #2 Take your vitamins at night just before you lay down and never on an empty stomach. I could not take regular prenatal vitamins so my doctor actually recommended Flintstone vitamins and I would take one in the morning and one at night. Make sure they are high in folic acid, not too high in iron. The iron is usually what upsets your stomach. (If you are reacting to iron in your vitamins, your baby is likely to get an upset stomach with the formula with iron, too. Keep that in mind.) #3 Don't be afraid to complain to your doctor. There is medicine they can give you for severe cases. Most of the time the morning sickness will stop in the beginning of the 2nd trimester. Stay hydrated!! I hope this helps.

Hi, I hope this helps. I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum(excessive vomiting) w/both of my pregnancies. I even had a Reglan pump and still got sick w/medicine going thru me 24/7. I was even in the hospital at least once a month for dehydration and had an IV at home for a week! Phenergan works great, but basically it just makes you go to sleep. (Yes, I still vomitted in my sleep, even though I had phenergan running thru my veins!) Anywho,,let the suggestions begin!

I took my vitamin at night (it helped a little), I eventually stopped taking a vitamin though. (babies turned out just fine too).

I found, in my circumstance, that if I ate whatever sounded good, or whatever I was craving it did not come back up. Whether if it was healthy or not. It worked 99% of the time too!

I too felt better w/my tummy full or 1/2 full most of the time, so the small meal/snack idea is great. The usual foods (ginger, crackers, 7-up etc) did not help one bit for me. Although, hard candy did help (Werther's, butterscotch, Jolly Ranchers). That's why I always just ate what I was craving.

If nothing else, call your dr. they do have medicine that they can give you for it! (Trust me I tried them all!)

Also, each pregnancy is different, just like each little blessing from Heaven is! Good luck, I hope this helps. Just remember if it gets too bad, call your dr.

I had horrible (lost 15 lbs in the first 3 months) all day sickness with my first 2 and am having some, but not as bad with this baby now. These are the things that I have found helped me a little but nothing was a true fix.

1) Fruit (especially watermelon)
2) Peppermints or peppermint gum
3) Peppermint or Peach tea (I drank mine cold like iced tea because I couldn't stomach hot things) Celestial seasonings makes both
4) Vitamin B6 (my OB gave the okay)
5) Yogurt (I know it sounds crazy and it has been hard for me to get the first few bites down but once I do it helps)
6) Applesauce
7) Motion sickness wristbands( You can get them at Walgreens. You wear them on your wrists and look like a fool but they helped me some my 1st pregnancy with my twin girls. I'm not sure how much of it was a physical vs. a psychological thing but at some point you will try anything.)

And don't forget prescription medicine from your doctor if you just can't take it anymore. I have know a ton of people who have taken it and it helped and they had healthy babies.
Congratulations it sounds like we are due around the same time.

I have not read the other responses so this may be a repeat...I had morning sickness with both and I used:

* Peppermint: gum, breathmints, candy, etc. Keep it on hand.
* Drank Ensures like they were going out of style. EVERY night I would put one in an ice bucket by my bed and around 2-3 in the morning when I had to visit the restroom, I would drink it...I was able to get out of bed the next morning without loosing it. My OB said these were fine to drink as many as I wanted. Much easier to get full than eating saltines.

Hang in there....

Are you taking your vitamins everyday???? If so, cut them in 1/2 and only take 1/2. Ginger is supposed to work...ginger ale or Whole Foods has ginger candys to suck on ginger tea...etc.
THere are also wrist bands that provide pressure point therpy that some people swear by. I am a mother of 6 year old twins and I lost 32 pounds being pregnant...I never stopped feeling sick and threw up constantly until the day they were delivered..Not to put a damper on things but I tried everything but nothing worked for me...However, other people swear by the above methods. I feel your pain and wish I could help...hopefully some of the suggestions will work for you.

Anything with ginger. You can actually get ginger caplets and take them if you can't stand to eat anything but crackers. I lived off saltines, water and plain cream of wheat for 14 weeks b/c I couldn't keep anything else down. The ginger helped get me through the day, as I was teaching high school at the time. I couldn't stand the preggie pops b/c I was really sensitive to sweets and carbonated anything made my heartburn kick into overdrive. The ginger caplets were the only thing that got me through. I have heard from a lot of mom's that they are extremely tired with the second one. Try taking your multiples and extra time released B vitamins just as you are falling asleep at night. You can also get the ginger in capsule form at most health food stores. The folic acid with the b helpers and the extra ginger should give you more energy and less nausea.

Remember when it is really tough, this too shall pass. You have my sympathies and congratulations in the meantime.

I am 14 weeks now but I assure you for the first 11 or 12 weeks, all I did was EAT EAT EAT! Eating was the only thing that helped me feel remotely alive...and it was so wierd because one minute I felt like I was going to get sick and then next minute I was shoving food in my mouth! Go figure! I don't really have any tricks to teach you other than to just eat even when you don't think you can....eat eat eat! And know that it does go away in a few more weeks! :) Good luck!

Gina,
I would recommend Gingersnaps and Canada Dry Gingerale. I was throwing up in my first trimester and both of those helped immensly. Ginger soothes the stomach and I thought it wouldn't work until I tried it. Also, I sucked on Preggie Pop Drops in the evenings (can find at Babies R Us). I sometimes even left the box of Gingersnaps by my bed for first thing in the morning. At World Market and Ikea, you can get the thinner kind of gingersnaps which taste even better. Good luck!

The first couple of months that I was pregnant with my now 5 1/2 month old daughter was horrible - I was exhausted all the time, and I threw up constantly. At the time I was working in a restaurant, so the smells were making me even more sick - the smell of bacon cooking was enough to send me running to the bathroom every 5 minutes. Ugh! The only thing I can reccomend is to get some liquid prenatal vitamins. The horse pills that I had at first were awful, but the liquid ones were a little better. I got mine at Vitamin Shoppe.

Hi! I was very sick the first 15 weeks of my pregnancy. Here are a few things that helped me, I hope they help you:

1. Ginger Ale - sipping Ginger Ale really helps!
2. Saltine Crackers
3. Don't go without meals for too long - eat small meals several times a day and don't let yourself get hungry. You might not feel like eating, but honestly, if you go without food, it will make you feel worse.
4. The vitamins were hard for me too - even though the instructions said to take without food, I always took them with crackers. Oh, and don't lay down for 30 minutes after taking them if you can help it.
5. Fresh Air - walking around the neighborhood and breathing fresh air seemed to help, or maybe it was just getting out of the house. :)

I'm sorry you are having a rough time! Hopefully it will pass soon...

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I would recommend you get some saltine-type crackers at the health food store that do not contain any partially hydrogenated oils in them and are made from whole wheat flour. Keep them next to your bed and eat some before you even get up in the morning. Also, keep them with you and get in the habit of snacking on them and anything else you can tolerate somewhat steadily throughout the day. Hopefully, your morning sickness will go away after the 12th week.

OK so you've got a ton of advice, which I'm going to use too since I'm also about 7 weeks preggy, with an almost three year old and feel yucky! I've been fortunate not to throw up but just feel icky all day long. So what is working for me is taking my vitamins (Citracal with DHA) with lunch, it seems to be when I can eat the most (Mac & cheese, baked potato, crackers with hummous, rice with plain yogurt, anything pretty much bland and uninteresting!) I also make sure I drink at least a full 8 oz of water or more and it seems to help, and then of course I nap. God, all I feel I do these days is eat and sleep, just like our babies to come! Anyway, I also use a peace of mind product from Origins that you rub on your temples and neck that smells like peppermint and it seems to work awesome and of course I find myself sniffing my fingers a lot too! Peppermint gum also helps me and keeps me from all the mass amount of carbs I feel like I'm consuming constantly. Another thing is Gogi juice. It is the new miracle fruit that a Doula recommended and although I have to force myself to drink it (it doesn't taste bad at all, just sweet which is one of things I just have no interest in right now), the days I do I find I have a lot more energy and less nausea. If you're interested let me know and I can connect you with her, she's a distributor and super nice and wonderful. Anyway, I guess this is no where near short, but good luck and we will survive! =)

Gina, There is a homeopathic remedy called "Nux Vomica". It works great for nausea. You put 2-3 pellets under your tongue and let them dissolve. If it feels better but not quite gone repeat the dose. If after 3 doses its not gone, then its done all its gonna do and you need to try something else. Its safe for pregnancy and you can't overdose on it. If the nausea is caused by your body trying to detox to make a safer place for the baby then you should try 1 tablespoon of "Bentonite" in a little bit of juice or water twice a day. Some women combine these remedies and have great results. You can get both of these at a health food store. Hang on for that second trimester! Blessings,
