Mild, but Ongoing Nausea...

I have been drinking lots of water, am trying to cut back on coffee, and nibble on snacks throughout the day (in addition to meals), but I am still having ongoing mild nausea--no vomitting, just feeling "blah." I have been drinking ginger ale once in a while but don't want to be drinking soda regularly since I almost never drink soda. I bought some hard lemon candy to suck on and that helps a bit. I have ginger tea as well. Any hard candy (sugar free?) that helps with nausea that might be in the grocery store? Any other ideas? Hoping it ends before it gets worse... Thanks! :)

To Clarify: This is mild morning sickness, I was just being non-specific because it is mild and I am most likely barely 4 weeks along. I was hoping there might be some good hard candy suggestions or something but I mentioned my diet since I know it is not caused by anything I'm eating. Thanks again!

So What Happened?

I'm going to look for the pregnancy-oriented candies and probably try some Jolly Ranchers. My husband just got me crystalized ginger and I keep forgetting to put saltines in my car. It is unfortunately worse when I'm on the phone at work and have to turn off my fan in order to hear a client. :( I have never had problems with my vitamins (I've been taking the same ones for four years) and take them right before bed anyway. Thanks for the ideas. At least it is not vomitting, which I enjoyed with my last pregnancy. :)

Try some crystallized ginger or pickled ginger. I love them both and they really help me when my stomach feels queasy.

I was nauseas for 10 months with my first and now going on 5 months with my second. Like you I tried everything even the candies. I think some of us are just more prone to being nauseas. I did take some anti-nausea medicine prescribed by my doctor as my condition was interfering with my ability to work full-time, school part-time and taking care of my DD. Those didn't help me much either other than making me ugh... constipated. So I stopped and now I just live with puking at least five times a week and trying to make it through the rest of my time. BTW - I really resent mothers who love being pregnant at this point - just kidding. Well, usually =)

Try eating a few saltines when you feel nausea coming on. I always carried a few in a baggy when I was pregnant and they worked great!

Sounds like you are doing what you can. I had to do rice cakes or other starches. Also try peppermint tea and be active if you can. It helps if you don't wallow in it. Just an FYI, you may want to stay away from sugar free items. Artificial sweeteners aren't good for you or your little one. My doc suggested avoiding them.

add a little salt into your diet and keep going with the ginger tea.

My number one response is always: go see a chiropractor.
Other than that, take a look at your diet again. Is there anything else you cut out? How much coffee did you drink? Did you drink throughout the day? Did you add cream and/or sugar? If you did, then your body is used to that sugar, and any drastic changes might tweak your system. Are you drinking too much water? You may have messed up your electrolytes balance. Remember, your body tells you when something is wrong. Don't just remedy the symptoms, find and treat the actual problem.

Didn't read the other posts, so not sure if this is a repeat, but Preggie Pops and Pregggie drops are great! Here's a link to see what they're all about:

I don't know if you'd buy them from this site, it will just give you an idea about them. I think target, cvs and walgreens all sell them and many maternity stores sell them. They're organic and they're pretty yummy. Good luck and congrats :o)

hi M., when my mornig sickness (all day) got really bad, i was at a friends house and she recommended "emetrol" it's a syrup you can find in rite aid or cvs and you take a teaspoon of it and it totally takes the edge off!! i used it all of my 3rd month until it went away....=)
another tip is to keep wedges of lemon in your fridge and sniff them, it really works! plus keep an ice-cold washcloth on your neck and let it sit on your forehead too...it gives much relief! i hope this helped u! good luck!

Unless the gingerale has real ginger in it I'd stop drinking it, it could just make your morning sickness worse (lots of sugar and bubbles without the benefit of ginger)--Real ginger candy, ginger tea and food with fresh ginger as an ingredient may help to settle you stomach.

Two things really help me with that blah feeling-- one is eating extra greens (spinach, kale, chard, etc) and starting eating spicy food. I suppose the extra vitamins are logical, and seriously I believe a lot of morning sickness is our bodies calling for extra vitamins and minerals needed for the baby.

I still haven't figured out out my need for spicy food during pregnancy though--other people tell me I crazy, but it may be part of the vitamin thing :D

Some people find a nice rich broth or miso soup can help keep off the queasy feelings they get. Fermented vegetables (sauerkraut, pickles, etc) can also help--if available make/get ones that are still alive (ie not pasteurized) so that you get both the vitamins and good bacteria (plus they tend to be lower in salt).

FWIW my morning sickness is exactly like yours too--not really sick, but a lot of blah and a bit of an aversion to some smells (raw meat--especially beef, coffee . . )

I don't think you can buy it in the grocery store, but some maternity stores have something called Preggo Pop Drops. They are little individually wrapped candies that help with morning sickness, and are various flavors. They were a huge help with my morning sickness and that of many of my friends, so maybe you could try those. Good luck!

Nausea is of course one of the most common symptoms of the first trimester, so you may not get it to go away completely. I had it until 12 weeks or so, and then it just went away. I liked the pep-o-mint Lifesavers. They were much better for me than Ritz or Saltines, although my mother swore by the crackers. Ginger is good, most ginger ale sodas are full of corn syrup, so stay away from that. I ate a carb/protein combo (like cheese and crackers, humus and pita, mac and cheese) every 2 hours or so. Mac and cheese always made me feel better! Try to get a nice healthy version. My mother-in-law makes her own. I wouldn't worry about it being a symptom of any sort of digestive illness, or go to the chiropractor. There are varying reports of chiropractic care causing other problems like blood clots and spinal injuries and I've never seen any research to show that it cured pregnancy related nausea. And! My friend had to change her prenatal vitamins. That helped her avoid the nausea. Hang in there and I hope you feel better soon!

You could try Altoids. Their "curiously strong" peppermint or spearmint flavors worked for me when I had mild morning sickness! My mom's dr recommended them for her while she was having nausea related to some medications she was on. Good luck and hang in there.

Haven't read all the responses - but for me, my "morning sickness" was mostly caused by the prenatal vitamins I was taking. As soon as I stopped taking them I was fine. I just made sure I ate a balanced diet with lots of fruits & veggies. Good luck.

I had the same issue and nibbled on Ritz crackers, which helped me a lot. It was relativly healthy (even more so now b/c they have a whole wheat variety), easy & quick to eat @ my desk, pretty portable and tasty. Maybe you should try that. Good luck!

I combined raw ginger with peppermint and made tea out of it. that helped me alot. Also, didn't snack unless I felt worse. Usually, I just made sure my meals were on time. Walking helps too sometimes I've heard. Actually never tried it but next time I will. Sounds like you basically have morning sickness the way I did. Blah.

I had aweful morning sickness (without the vomiting part). I found that the mint patties helped at times. I froze them and would suck on a small piece for a while. Also plain crackers all day long. I found that if I didn't eat anything at all the sickness was worse but if I ate the crackers I did better. Congratulations and remember "This will pass!!!!" and it is all worth it when you hold that bundle of joy at the end!!!

This could be a symptom of a larger problem. Do you have any other digestion problems? You might want to discuss it with your practitioner. Are you on any medications that this could be a side effect of?

If the nausea is worse on an empty stomach then I would try to keep it full by eating several small meals throughout the day rich in protein and fiber. Steer clear of fried, battered, greasy, or fatty foods as this can make it worse. Also make sure you are wearing loose fitting clothes. Tight pants can contribute to and worsen the nausea.

If the nausea is worse on a full stomach I would stick to foods that are easy to digest (most fruits and vegetables but not acidic ones like tomatoes, oranges, strawberries). You can try the BRAT diet for a while (Bananas, rice, apples, toast) which are binding and sustaining foods but are easy on the tummy.

Ginger and peppermint are very common and helpful herbs for digestion. You may even want to try a pregnancy tea for nausea/morning sickness (Earth Mama Angel Baby is WONDERFUL). Too much of both can have the opposite effect though. I used pressure point bands (sea bands) when I was pregnant to fight nausea. They go on your wrists (ask for them at your pharmacy, Target had them behind the counter) and apply pressure to a pressure point that relates to your tummy and can provide relief with no side effects.

Stronger options would be taking Nauzine (you can by at Walgreens) which are chewable tablets that I would use when it came on sudden and was very bad. Your doctor can also prescribe Ondansetron (not sure of spelling but it is the generic for Zofran) it becomes unbarable or debilitating. I have taken both during pregnancy and it does the trick.

I would definitely try to dig deeper and look for clues or other symptoms that could be related to a bigger problem.

Best of luck!
