Is This Normal? - Canton,OH

My daughter is 2 years old. My questions is, is this normal for her to be talking in her sleep? She blurts out some of the most funniest things. Last night she was sleeping, rolled over and blurted out "Where my pants?" A few other ones have been "Oranges", "No! I don't wanna!", and my fave "Roar! Im a lion" (we just went to the akron zoo that day). I have never heard of a child (this young) doing this before. Just wanted to know. Thanx for your input.

So What Happened?

THANK YOU LADIES!!!!!!!!! i guess that i wasn't that worried about it, more of a "Am I the only one with a child that does this?" feeling that I know all of us mothers get. as Pauline had stated, yes she is well rested in the morning 95% of the time. and as tara had stated, i think the same thing, that she is wide awake and when i go to check on her she is sound asleep.

thank you once again for your input. you all have been VERY helpful in putting my mind at ease that my child is PERFECTLY normal.

Hi A.,

I have 2 daughters, one 8 and one 5. They both sometimes laugh in their sleep, and my oldest has been talking in her sleep for as long as I can remember! She has always had advanced language skills, and also has an active imagination. I never really questioned the sleep talking, it just seemed like an extension of her dreams. We have had mini conversations while she is sleeping, and if she seems anxious or scared I will always "direct" her thoughts to pleasant and comforting things. She never remembers doing it the next day, but will sometimes remember a related dream.
I don't really think you have anything to worry about, I hope I was able to help,

My son talks in his sleep also, he is 4 now but started at about two. I have gotten "Where's my cape", "no, that's my money", "get out of my bed monkeys" and some other great ones. His father also talks in his sleep. And it seams to be more when he is very tired.

Ok.....A....I am rollin' right now....because my son does the same thing. He is 2 yrs old....and has been talking/mummbling/even cooing in his sleep since he was about 6 months. The reason I laugh is because my son goes thru all his animal noises......tiger, elephant, lion, duck, horse, etc......and I swear he is awake because it is so darn clear. But when I go check on him, he is sound asleep. He has had a sleep study done, but not for that reason. He did a lot of talking in his sleep there so I asked the nurses and they said it was very normal. He might or might not grow out of it....but he is so cute when he does it. Some nights he whines and fusses....those mornings he doesn't seem as well rested but the nights he just jabbers away he seems fine the next morning (actually in a very good mood). So please don't worry and if you get a chance....go to a scrapbook store, they have these little recorders that record for 10 secs I got one for my son and recorded his talking and put it on the page with pictures of him sleeping!

My 4-yr-old daughter talks in her sleep all the time. She probably started when whe was your daughter's age. Mostly she says hilarious things. Sometimes she will cry in her sleep, though, and I just have to yell, "Mommy's here, Sweetie" from my bedroom, and she stops. It's strange - even though she is sound asleep, she can still hear me, and she's immediately comforted by my voice. She always seems well-rested in the morning, so I have never worried about it. My sister used to talk in her sleep all the time when we were kids, so I guess it seems normal to me.

My 3 1/2 yr old son does something very similar. He would wake up screaming. Then seem very disoriented. We assumed it was a bad dream. We weren't sure if 2-3 yr old did dream, but his doctor confirmed it. That hasn't happened for some thime, but we do hear him laughing occasionally.

I can only speak from my own experience with my 4 year old son. He has always been an active sleeper and he has always talked in his sleep. I was the same way at his age, except that I also liked to walk in my sleep. I also think the things he says are cute, but he does wake up a lot at night(not so cute)

God bless!

Yes, this is completely normal.

Her brain is "working through" her day while she sleeps. She's beginning to make sense of her experiences and her brain is developing the functions that help her learn and understand the world in terms of how the world relates to her.

I have talked (and walked) in my sleep my whole life and I am a very well-adjusted 37-year-old mom of 2, one of whom walks and talks in her sleep as well.

Because sleep-talking and sleep-walking often go hand-in-hand, I would suggest taking some measures to ensure that her environment is fairly safe and free of things she could stumble over in the dark, etc. But don't worry. She'll be just fine.

In the meantime, write down some of the things she says in her sleep. My mother did and my husband thinks that my baby book is the funniest thing he's ever read!

Best of luck to you.

My son talks in his sleep. I find it very funny. I think it is normal because children replay their day while they sleep. Just think of it as a great way to always know what is happening.

I have 3 grown children, and one always talked in her sleep and said crazy things. Another one occassionally walked in his sleep. One time at 5 yrs. old he got up and peed in the closet! He was totally asleep! One didn't do any of this. I guess they're all just unique individuals! If everything else is fine, I wouldn't worry.

Hi A.. Just wanted to let you know this was very normal. It's just part of your daughters sleep. If she seems well rested and calm when she wakes up she is just fine. I went through this with my nephew and I asked his doctor and they told me exactly the same thing. This is just part of their sleep. It's funny to listen to. Believe it or not, some adults do this too. My husband does this sometimes when he is over tired. My nephew grew out of this. Take care.

NO, honey this is not normal. All talking in your sleep is, is not expressing yourself througout the day. Ask her more questions, let her talk until her hearts content, let her act out her conversations and see what that does. And also, tire her out so much all she can do is sleep without her mind racing about throughout the night.

Hi! My son is going to be 4 in 2 months and he has been "talking" in his sleep since before he had any real vocabulary. He doesn't do it every night or anything, but often. My pediatrician said it's perfectly normal, so don't be worried. My 2 year old daughter doesn't do it at all, so I don't really know what causes some kids to do it and others to not.
