Is My 11 Month Old Getting Enough

My son will be 1 year the end of this month. Just earlier this week we switched him to whole milk and have been working hard on sticking to a 3 meals + 2 snack day. My concern is that breakfast with me seems to be good (mini pancakes, yogurt or fruit, and sometimes a rice cake - he loves them??? and about 3-5oz of milk). He doesn't eat too much solid food at daycare although I will send him with lots of things to have (he does drink his milk). Then dinner he is OK about some days and finicky about others. He is all about Gerber finger food puffs, rice cakes, or cereal - but this is not really my idea of a meal. He is more than healthy even being premature- as he weighs almost 21 lbs right now at 11.5 months. He was born 2 months early so I am not set on taking him off the bottle right away, but obviously would like to see him rely more on eating meals than drinking them. Some days dinner is like a buffet trying to figure out what he will want....I end up throwing out so much.

I guess what I am asking is: How much whole milk should they be drinking/day and how much solid food is normal for his age range (10 months adjusted age...almost 12 months real age)

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I have an 11 month old little girl and she will be 1 on the 28th. Right now our schedule is 5am she gets and 8oz bottle of formula. She gets to daycare at 730 so at about 8 she'll get breakfast which consists of a mini waffle or mini bagel and yogurt. Around 10 she'll get another 8oz bottle and then around noon she gets her lunch which is usually a protein, fruit and cheerios or goldfish to snack on throughout. She'll get her next bottle at about 2pm. I pick her up from daycare at 4 so when we get home she'll eat dinner which is usually whatever we eat (obviously within reason) and then at 630 she'll get her last 8oz bottle of formula. After that she's asleep for the night.

I'm no expert, but this seems to work for us. I can't really help with the whole milk thing since our pediatrician also told us to wait until she was 1 years old. But you know, it's whatever you feel comfortable with and whatever your little guy will take. The best piece of advice I've been given is that they (the babies) will let you know what they need or don't need.

I don't know if that helped you, but I hope it did??

Have a great night!

i'm so glad you asked this question! i have similar questions about my 9 1/2 month son. Like, when can i start him on whole milk. i've only breast-feed and rarely, if ever use a bottle (we skipped the bottle and went straight to the sippy cup). i'm not sure how to transition from nursing to milk, when and how much. and since he just cut his first tooth the other day we are still on stage 2 and some stage 3 food, no whole food. i only want to nurse him until 12 months.

Whole milk should generally not be started before 1 year of age because of potential allergy issues, although I would suggest discussing the option with your doctor. My son is 18 months old. He eats well, but not always as much as I would like him to. From what I have read on the topic and discussed with my doctor, this is not a huge issue. Offering a large variety of foods is important, and offering them at regular times is also. However, there may be a time when macaroni and cheese is all he/she will actually eat....or bananas...For example, my son always loved vegetables and fruit alike, and ate almost anything. Now, he eats piecesof carrots, chews on them and spits the pieces out. I think it's a texture thing but who knows. Basically, I've learned to be flexible. Good luck!

I don't have any suggestions for you, but my friend is going throught the same thing with her 1 year old and daycare. He comes home and wants puffs and cereal and that's it! She's thinking about asking the daycare to give him a lighter late afternoon snack to see if that helps.
