I have off that day (federal and state holiday) and most of the schools are closed. Depending on whether or not you need her, she should have the day off or get paid a little extra for being there!
My nanny will be on vacation the week between Christmas and New Years. We haven't yet discussed whether she will be coming back on Monday, January 2nd or Tuesday, January 3rd. For those of you with full-time nannies, I am wondering if you consider January 2nd a holiday this year and if you will be giving your nanny the day off. Thanks!
Thanks very much for your responses! It looks like my nanny will have the day off! And, by the way, my subject was supposed to say "Is January 2nd a holiday this year" not "Is January 2nd a holiday today." I guess my brain is already on vacation! Thanks again for your responses.

I don't have a nanny, or any employees for that matter, but I can tell you that Monday the 2nd is the day the Federal government is using for the holiday so all Federal offices/buildings will be closed.
I read your answers so I will just add this. Is she travelling for Christmas? It makes a lot of differance to have a day to travel. My 1st yr of a new job Christmas was on a weekend and I had to be back to work immediately. I couldn't go home because I didn't have travel time. I regret that decision to this day. Technically, yes, my employer had the right to require me to be there, but it was just a technicality and it felt unfair.
My office is closed on that day.
It is for the banks, my husband's company and my daycare. So I would say yes
It is a federal holiday, so I don't know why she wouldn't be off.
My babysitter is closed as well. Our local schools are open because they are making up days from Hurricane Irene.
It depends on whether you give the legal holidays off. What I mean is if you traditionally give New Years day off then yes, January 2, is a holiday since the first fell on a Sunday.
I don't have a nanny but since Christmas and New Years Day fall on Sundays this year, the Monday just after each is a legal holiday. It is appropriate to give her the 2nd off, because she does not get a day off for New Years. Your workplace has probably given you the 2nd off. Your nanny should receive the same from her employer.
I work for the state, and that is not considered a holiday for us. I haven't decided if the nanny will be off, but I'm leaning toward it.
M-F and off on the actual day. If she wants to take a certain day off as the holiday then that is totally up to you. Nanny hours are not subject to the Federal Holiday schedule. They work when you work.
Since the holiday falls on a Sunday all government offices are taking their holiday on the 2nd. So of course that means that my daycare for my kids is closed. Of course I have to work. Yay for husbands that prearranged to take that day off :)
January 2 is considered a holiday in New York this year, and all of the state courts are closed on that day.
