Is It Normal...

I had my daughter almost 4 months ago. Is it normal to still be bleeding? I stopped bleeding after 4 weeks, then after a week I started again. I'll stop bleeding for a week, then it starts up again for another 2 weeks. My husband and I are concerned that there is something wrong, but I don't want to over react and go to the doctor if this is normal. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I don't have insurance, so I've had a difficult time finding a doctor, but for now, I've made an appointment at Planned Parenthood. I used to work at one in Texas, so I've got some faith in it. If anyone has any experiance with the PPH in Waterrown, I'd like to know what you thought about. Thanks for all your input. You all made me feel a lot better about my concerns. And my husband wanted me to thank you all, too, because I wouldn't have made an appointment if you hadn't suggested it. He's been worried and is very glad to take me to my appointment. Thanks again!

If you have any concerns, I highly suggest calling your doctor. They WANT you to call them with questions like this and if they don't, then I suggest finding a new doctor.

While a similar thing happened when I had my son (my third) 5 months ago, it only lasted about a month in total. I don't believe it is normal to have it last 4 months with only a week or two reprieve even if it were your cycle starting over. Are you nursing?

I would call the doctor without a second thought just to make sure.

Hugs,
L.

Hi R..
When I gave birth to my second son my bleeding persisted for a long time too and was very irregular. I was really worried about it and I made an appointment. It turned out, as one other woman said, after my OB asked a bunch of questions he said it was normal. It did eventually stop, but you should definitely call your doctor. That's what they're there for and I'm sure they will either talk to you in length over the phone or have you come in. You just gave birth so it's important to take care of all those things. You're not over-reacting at all.
Congrats on your new baby. Enjoy her! They get big so fast.

This is not normal. I'm sure it's nothing too concerning, but you should definately see your doctor.

I remember having an unusual bleed some months after my son's birth. I called the on-call OB and discussed with him, he asked me a bunch of questions and then reassured me it was not unusual, but suggested I make an appt with my OB just to review the details, again the OB reassured me I was fine.
Don't hesitate to see your OB, if just to get advice and reassurance that your type bleeding is normal. Just make an appt and go, you are not overeacting, you just want to have an understanding of what the bleeding is all about and that you are OK. Once you call and tell them you have had some postpartum bleeding and are unsure of it's cause they will give you a quick appt. and if they don't insist upon it. Make sure you go to the doctor with a clear picture of your bleeding episodes with approximate dates, duration and flow, to make the best use of your time with the doctor.
Best Regards,
N.

Go to the doctor. Always listen to your body. What does your husband know about bleeding every month!

It could just be a sign that you are pushing yourself to hard, but I don't think you should just ignore it, cause it does seem a little unusual. I don't think your doctor would mind at all if you made an appointment to discuss it with them. I would call the office ASAP. Hope that helps - feel better soon!

If the bleeding is not heavy, maybe 1 or 2 pads a day, then I wouldn't be too concerned. The bleeding can keep going for months on end sadly. Some it can take up to a year for a regular cycle to start again. If it IS heavy, I suggest talking to your doc as soon as you can. In the meantime, make sure you are eating enough iron as your body is going to loose way tooooo much if you are constantly bleeding like this.

BTW: being a new mom can sometimes make us wonder what we should or should not call the doctor about. You never want to "over burden" the doc, but trust me...they understand. No matter what it is, call your doc any time you are in doubt. They know what it's like being a new parent and most are more than happy to either help you theirselves, or point you exactly where someone can answer your questions better.

R. - GO SEE THE DOCTOR.

If it is just that your 'cycle' is the only issue, they may put you on birth control to regulate your periods back to having them each month, and not biweekly.

I think you should definitely check it out. It sounds like there might be a piece of the placenta still in place, and it should be removed before an infection sets in. Speak to you ob/gyn ASAP.

i don't mean to alarm you, but I would go to a doctor as soon as possible if you haven't been to one already, or talk to one about this problem right away. This does not sound normal. Not normal to be bleeding that much for 4 months, but even if it was just spotting, by four months I would be concerned enough to see a doctor for sure. Ask the doctor is this normal and also even if they say just wait, ask them if you should be taking iron supplements or not. Best wishes

dear R., this is not normal, If you are bleeding so much a visit to the doctor is what I would advise. You may be quiet run down and also suggest an iron blood test. Go to teh doctor

You need to call your OB. My friend bled for that long and she finally went to the OB. Come to find out there was still a piece of placenta inside her. Could have been an even bigger issue if she waited any longer.
I'm not saying that is your issue, but put a call into the office to be on the safe side.

If you are breastfeeding you mat not have a regular period for some time. I would still contact the doctor to dicuss it with them. They can tell you to what extent is normal. You and your husband will breathe easier.

My response is the same as everyone else...Call the Dr. I always feel it is better to check with them then have it be something serious and you didn't call or go to the Dr.

Something similar happened to me, but I was put on the depo shot for BC at the time. I would call the doctor if you are not on any hormones.

This is something I would check on, you are not over reacting at all. It is best to check with your OB/GYN as soon as possible. He/She will tell you if it is nothing, or you have a problem.
I do not know how you had the baby, natural or c-section but I had some problem with my two boys and it was some residue of the afterbirth that caused it. I had a one day in the hospital surgery and no more problems.
