OK moms, I need your help.. My husband & I have been arguing about how we both say words in front of my son. I was upset with my son tonight over his bath & said the words "freaking water". My husband said that I was cussing at my son! I said that he (husband) uses the word "freaking" all the time when he talks & why suddenly did he say I was cussing at my son?? Do you think that's a cuss word? I pointed out to him that he says the word bull cr"p all the time (not to my son but when talking to his brother or sister on the phone which my son could hear) & but he says it doesn't mean the same as bull sh"t. What planet is he from??? If freaking is a bad word then I'm going to stop saying it.. I also don't want my son going to school & saying bc to his friends! Now he says I'm trying to justify myself.. I'm not, just exasperated when it's clear as day those words (bc) means exactly what it is! & English is not even my 1st language!
How should I explain to him (husband)?
No rude comments please, just your honest answer..
Thank you

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for your input & some humorous insights..:) In the end, it didn't matter anymore for me to prove to my hubby if bc is the same as bs cos we both compromised. I'm going to try my very best not to say "freaking" when talking to my son & he's going to try his very best not to say bc when in a conversation around my son. I actually sat down w/ my son & explain all the "bad words" & bless his heart, he tells me he's not going to say them but will remind us both (mommy & daddy) to watch our language..lol!

I try to do word replacement. When my little bro was a baby, I started saying "monkey" instead of any bad words. It was cute when he thought he was getting away with something by saying "monkey". Also, I was a senior in high school and many of my friends started saying it, too. One even did the other day on FB and totally cracked me up, since we're almost 30.

Honestly I think they are both the same. One is just as bad or not so bad as the other. If you don't want them to say something remotely like one, you don't teach them the other. And in my opinion they are both the same in that manner. Just like I don't let my kids say, "What the?" because I don't want that sentence to be finished. Just my opinion. Good Luck.

haha

Just thought I would add. The "F" word comes out of my mouth, as does Sh!t, B!tch, and other forms of cursing. I try awfully hard not to say things in front of my kids, however sometimes I fail (usually when driving!). I say, there are so MUCH worse things that we can do to our kids...them hearing me say a bad word isn't going to scar them for life!

Unlike the other "pure" mother's...I DO use "alternative" language....however, MY alternative language is, just that, alternative.
"himey schnikes", or "what the day when the ground went green" or, my fave, "whooda whata whooda?".....
I think that kids will ALWAYS learn the "bad stuff"...its just a matter of timing....I would rather my three year old yell "snikes" (when no one can figure out what she means) Than to yell "freakin" or "friggen", that everybody knows the substitute.
Just my thought...

The other day my 5 year old stepped on my finger... it freaking hurt! And I said so. He laughed and said "Mom, what are you talking about?".

I'm waiting for him to use it...

I wouldn't use it again unless I wanted my kids to start saying it... but it for sure is not a "cuss" word in our house.

Just remember that anything you or your husband say in front of your kids is likely to be repeated by your son at the most embarrassing times. I don't think freaking water is a cuss word, but you could find another way of expressing yourself. I understand your frustration at bathtime, but maybe you could get a book that many recommend on this site, "Talking so your children will listen". bull cr*p is not appropriate and little ears will pick that one up quickly. It is normally said with feeling or with anger so little ears hear that and pick up on it. You could be carrying on a normal conversation and it will not catch their attention, but bull cr*p, said with any feeling will get a response from your child. And at an inappropriate time --they will blurt it out ---just like dad!

I think that is half way swearing, its an alternative. I also think if you dont want your kids to say, then you shouldnt either. You are their role model and learn from you, the most. If i imagine my daughter saying that, i tell her what a better way to say it is. Use an expression such "OH MY!" or "WOW" or "Shucks"

Recently my daughter told me somethign that happened at school, she used her middle finger to tell a kid to come to her, she used it VERY INNOCENTLY, she has never seen what the middle finger really means. The kid told the teacher and my daughter got in trouble. The teacher realized she did it innocently and she was not in trouble anymore. My daughter told me the kid explained to her it was "The F word" . I asked what is the "F Word"? She stuck her middle finger up. She still doesnt know its associated with any 'Word' haha. But to think some families and kids are around this and use this boggles my mind.

No, I do not think that "freaking" is a cuss word, and I say it sometimes too. But, to be honest, it doesn't sound right coming from the mouth of a little one. My almost 3 year old said it one day (she also is around older kids at daycare that say it, so I don't think it's just me!), and it rubbed me the wrong way. So, I am trying to be super careful not to say it, and I explained to her it's not a great word to use, I also need to listen to my own advice, because she has caught me saying it, and told me, "mommy you can't say freaking" and I said "Oh you are right! I shouldn't say that word! You are so smart, thank you for helping me remember!" and of course I feel so guilty! But I am getting better! Now, on to BC and BS. Yes they have the same meaning, but bc is less vulgar. Except I think the B in front just makes them both more vulgar (IMO). Just C alone, is better than bc, but either way, not for little ears. Your husband just needs to agree on what is acceptable and not acceptable to say in front of your son. Sometimes the only way to do that is for you to agree that you won't say something he doesn't like (even if you don't totally agree it's bad) and vice versa. So, if he doesn't like you saying freaking, then you say Ok, I won't say it, and then you can't say bc or bs. Good luck!

Would you want your son saying what you are saying? If not, then change what you are saying! Children learn what they live and repeat what they hear.

My rule-of-thumb: if I would not want my grandmother or my pastor to hear me using whatever word, I do my level best not to use that word - PERIOD! If you try to censor yourself only when children are present, you will slip. If you change your speaking habits all the time, then you are less likely to say something when you didn't see them right around the corner.

Many people (especially professionals) see cursing as a lack of intelligence, a sign of illiteracy (because they don't know many words, so they have to use 'filler' words), and/or inability to control themselves or their emotions.

Yes, it does mean the same thing as BS, and I don't think you would want your child saying either word. I don't think that freaking is a cuss word, and I do say it to around my son. However, the more I think about it, I probably don't want him to get in the habit of saying that word either.

If you consider bc a cuss word, then freakin' would also have to be a cuss word. They are directly related to swear words.
I think you nailed it when you said you don't want your son going to school and repeating the words - if you don't want them repeated, don't use them.
Good luck!

Regardless of whether or not something is a "bad word," just ask yourself "is this a word I would want my child to repeat, especially at school or in front of company?" If they hear it, they WILL say it. The words "sucks" and "freakin" aren't technically curse words, but I don't want my kids saying them. When they have slipped and said them (some of their friends say them) I tell them it does not sound good, especially for children, and it makes them sound unintelligent and uneducated. I don;t even let my kids say "shut up" It is just harsh and rude when there are other options that get the point across.

It is OKAY to substitute clean words for dirty words. I think everyone knows what "freakin' or freaking" is replacing and I think everyone would agree that the substitute words are completely G-rated compared to the word it is replaced. I do not use vulgar words but use substitute words instead.
The word bull-c_ _ _ is a vulgar word. So is the "s" word but the "s" word is much harsher and I would consider that word a dirty word.

Personally, I don't think we should be encouraging our children so say these words, but we all know that our children are little parrots and they imitate the parents. I would sit down with your son and explain that the bull-c _ _ _ is considered a dirty word and it should not be said out loud at school or at home.
As for your husband, he is a grown man should know exactly what the "c" word is referring to.

Yes it is all bad. Both of you should clean it up, especially if one is pointing fingers. Is it cussing? No, but it's intention is the same and it sounds horrible coming from a kid. My nephew used to say "WHAT THE" all the time. Really I thought he could just use the explicit and it would all be the same.

You have heard it all on here already. I have always tried to protect my kids from the ugly things of this world - UNTIL they go to school - then they are taught by every one they come into contact with. My 11 year old told me that elelmentary school kids use the "F" word on the school bus. I was shocked and so saddened. You just have to show your kids the right way to behave and be a good example of it. I use frick, shoot, and even pooey dooey - I know that is juvenile, my son used "crackers" there for a while.
I am originally from England and there is a whole othe set of words used there. Pissed is a cuss word in England and I hear it here all the time. It used to make me cringe, now I am over it.
