I would live during the Harlem Renaissance, which was during the period of 1920 to about 1935. I absolutely would be a jazz singer, and of course I would live in Harlem. I can go on all day about that daydream haha.

Which one would you choose?

What can I do next?

Not an era, but an alternate world....with World Peace, no financial issues, & enough for all. A world without commercial greed, living in harmony with the environment.

I'd like to say "beam me up, Scotty"....but Star Trek was not without conflict. :)

The 1950's. Seems a perfect era to raise a child. Simple programs on TV (if you even had one), corner stores (no wally worlds), and children could safely play outside, mother's were at home, children were better behaved and schooling was a high priority.

Not too imaginative I suppose, but I like living in this era. I think a lot of us like to look back at the past with rose-colored glasses and forget how difficult, dirty and dangerous it could really be.

I enjoyed those reality programs PBS used to have on - 1900 house, Frontier house, etc. where modern people were transported back to how things REALLY used to be. Women really took the brunt of it and handled so much thankless work. I remember one episode where they did the laundry (1900 house) and it took 3 days to complete. Ugh, no thanks. :)

I'd live forever w/ instant healing ability. :D

Any era before this one, and Id already be dead (medical). But if I could time travel? I'd live in all of them.

Yes. I am inherently greedy.

The Tudor Era , late 1400 - early 1500 so much drama, so much going on in all directions, what a moment for religion and faith in general no matter your stance. I, of course, would want to be in a position where I were in the King's Court, of course NOT a bed mate and not tied to any wife specifically, but close enough to know what was going on. It just seems so very interesting.

I'm a luddite, aesthetically, but I do like certain creature comforts.

I want:

Indoor plumbing, but candlelight/gaslight/kerosine, not electric light.
Bicycles, trains, and steamboats, but few if any cars.
Jazz/blues/ragtime, but no electronica, musically speaking
Books and newsstands everywhere you see. Theater, incl. vaudeville, but no TV.

This puts my eccentric self squarely in the Edwardian era (just before, and maybe during, WWI). This was also the beginning of the Progressive Era, politically, so I'd fit in ;). Of course, I want to live in this era without having to live with its social inequalities, i.e., the Jim Crow system in the South. When you scratch the surface, time travel does become a lot less appealing. I still want gaslight, blues joints, and train whistles, though.

A week ago last Tuesday.
We won't see times like that again anytime soon!
It's romantic to think about living in some other time, but I like indoor plumbing and the lack of plague or any number of other diseases.
Do you have ANY idea what it TOOK to do the laundry 100 years ago?
The automobile was thought to be such a great invention for keeping the streets clean - it meant no manure in the streets.
I'm rather fond of electricity, too.

Good question! I'd live in summer in the sixties at the beach. I'd do the Maroubra Stomp, wear bikinis, and be carefree.

If you would have asked me back in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or even the early 90s; I would have replied with so much assurance that it would be the Renaissance. I have always loved making the costumes for that time period. (1500s -1600s) I even love the music and singing in the Madrigal choir. It kind of makes me feel like I'm more at home. Sure women weren't always treated so well, but not every woman was beaten and todayd, it looks like we've taken a step backwards when you listen to the insulting of women that goes on in a typical comedian's routine. Sometimes women were treated with respect such as far as the code of chivalry goes. People where also more creative with reguards to language. They didn't just blurt out 4-letter words, instead they got creative with language when they were mad at someone. ("Thou art a cancersore festering on a drunkard's lip.") There were no speeding cars, so there were fewer accidents. Horses did the stearing when their masters got drunk, and the horse always knew the way home. There was more fresh air and lush green forests. Sure life wasn't perfect, but it certainly isn't now. Then you had crusaders, but now you have gangs. There may have been more disease, but now there's more violence.

If you ask me now....The era I'd like to live in is very different. It all changed, because of my son. When I went to school, kids really didn't know how to socialize at all. They just thought they did. They were very cruel and enjoyed bullying. There's still bullying, but the social skills are much better. Now I'd like to live far into the future, maybe the year 3000 would be really cool. Maybe by then, people will be nicer. Maybe by then we will all be a wonderful inter-racial mix, so there's no more prejudism. There are so many advances now in techology, that I'd like to see what's next. I enjoy the ablitiy to communicate with people around the world and see that there are other people like me and I'm not so odd anymore.

This one. Honestly. My husband and I just watched Hatfields & McCoys and *yikes* not that one for sure (late 1800s)! Finally, women are being treated with more respect and equality than ever before. I think any era other than this one would be a rude awakening as a woman.

UTA - I can think of so many people I care about, including myself and my daughter, who could be dead without modern medical care. No thanks.

But I've always thought it would be fun to VISIT another era for a *short* period of time - y'know, just for fun. Or, even better, bring someone from an earlier era and show them how things have changed. That would be cool.

As a history teacher I know too much about the past to actually want to live in any specific age or place. But, to play along...I'd pick......10 minutes later....nope, I can't do it! Sorry, I like far too much about the civilization we have created here in the US and the hurdles we have overcome to picture myself happy anywhere else :)
