Dear L.,

I know this is scary.

Make an appointment with the Pregnancy Crisis Center. It is located on Shreveport-Barksdale highway, near Shreve City. They are excellent. We went there when my daughter was surprised with an unexpected pregnancy. They were very knowledgeable and very KIND.

You will see a registered nurse. They will give you a free pregnancy test and free ultrasound and free counseling. It is all FREE.

There is no pressure or judgment from anyone there. They will give you a point of human contact and it sounds as if you need an advocate right now.

Please call them. I will be praying for you.

The likelihood of you being pregnant is pretty remote, it sounds like to me. If you have only been off the pill for a week, it is possible for you to have gotten pregnant in that time. However, it is not likely that you would feel the effects of the pregnancy quite that quickly. It takes most women a month or so before early pregnancy signs show up, especially the baby bump.

If it would ease your mind, see the doc and have them give you a pregnancy test. But unless you got pregnant while on the pill, which is possible, you probably couldn't feel the baby or the effects of being pregnant after only a week of being off the pill if you were even pregnant.

Give it some time. The hardest part is waiting. Always. But time will tell.

Hi L.,

I was on the Depo shot for a year before I had my daughter. It can take anywhere from 12-18 months for you to get pregnant after taking the shot. It took me 18 months to get pregnant with my daughter, after I quit taking the shots. I got my period back after only a few months after I stopped taking the shot, but it stays in your system for a very long time. I'd never heard of anyone being sterile after the shot, though. The likelihood of your being pregnant is very small. Depo is a really good form of birth control. If you stopped taking the shot 7 days ago, it is still in your system. Depo is a hormonal BC, and it tricks your body into thinking you are already pregnant, so you don't get pregnant. It also causes weight gain. The symptoms you are having are more than likely side-effects from the shot. I am on Depo again, and I had pregnancy symptoms too. It was the shot that gave me those symptoms, and I wasn't pregnant. It's highly unlikely you are pregnant. But, if you really think you are it wouldn't hurt to get another test done from your doctor. Also, don't get discouraged if you are trying to get pregnant. I was just about to give up when I finally got pregnant with my daughter. Like I said it took 18 months for it to happen. If you are trying to have a baby, don't give up. It should happen for you, it just may take time. Good luck!

i did the depo shot right after i had a baby and i didn't stop bleeding for 3 whole months so i never went to get another one, and then i didn't get my period back for another 4 months...that shot messes everything up for a minute so i'd say you're not pregnant..wait about 3 months or so cuz i'm sure its still in your system. =]

When you say you been off it for 7 days do you mean that 7 days ago you were due for another shot or what? The reason I ask is Depo is a very long acting BC.Sadly many women aren't told that. Some women are lucky and fertility returns shortly after the 3 month duration ends. Others it can take longer. If you read the info that came with the shot can tell you that in some cases it can take up to 18 months for fertility to return after the last shot.

Thought I would add some more since someone mentioned they didn't know depo could lead to infertility(sterile). It can and does do just that to many women. I actually now have secondary infertility. That is where one can get pregnant the first time with no issues but getting pregnant again doesnt work. I did depo after the birth of my first son. It took over 3 yrs after my last shot to get pregnant again. I have been off all forms of birth control since a yr after my second son was born and have yet to fall pregnant again. My second son is a little over 9 yrs old. So 8 yrs of no birth control.
For those that don't know Depo is used in sex offenders to reduce their sex drive. In China it is popular to give a higher than average dose to induce sterility. So yes Depo can lead to sterility.
