I Accidentally Picked up My Baby After Handling Raw Meat

I was putting raw ground lamb in the pan when I heard a crash from my one year old's room. I ran to make sure he was okay. He had just managed to knock over some toy from his crib, but without thinking, I grabbed him up. Then I realized I hadn't washed my hands. I immediately washed mine then his, but I am really going to obsess about this. What do you think are the chances he will get a food borne illness?! Argh!!!!

What can I do next?

Unless he can lick under his armpits... slim to none. :)

Seriously, though, assuming he could reach and touch, then put his hands under his mouth....Soap kills bacteria and viruses. If you're worried, just do a quick sponge bath w/ soap and water, or give him a quick shower.

Oh my gosh... if people got food borne illnesses every time they touched raw meat, no one would ever eat meat! Think about all the people in the rest of the world who don't have running water (not the most hygenic, I'm sure - but they survive!).

No chance at all. Before we knew about the stuff that may be in meat, mom's handled kids without washing all the time.

A little knowledge has made us germaphobic.

Good luck to you and yours.

He's fine-he would have to have licked the spot where you placed your hands in order to get a foodborne illness-and even then-fresh meat is pretty safe.

The chances of him getting sick from this are zero.

I am sure your baby will be fine. Rest assured he is in contact with many germs you don't even know about.

Like everyone else said pretty sure he'll be fine. You washed his hands good so it should be okay.

Although I would change his clothes too just to be safe.

I think he'll be fine. I think kids are constantly putting their hands on things that are dirty. If you're worried, just give him a bath. As long as he's not sucking on the raw meat, I think everything's ok. Our immune systems are much stronger than that. Unless your child has some sort of immune compromising problem, there shouldn't be an issue at all.

Not all raw meat has dangerous bacteria...I'm sure if there was going to be a problem, you'd know about it by now.

Probably fine, I have a one year old and I am pretty sure I did it once w/o thinking until later. Chances are small

If he is super tongue man then maybe, but otherwise you are safe. If it makes you feel better then just wash him in that spot. No worries, I was just as paranoid with my first and had to make myself back off with my second!
