I'm looking for some real life information from anyone who has had hypnosis to help them overcome a stubborn issue like weight loss, smoking, etc. I'm about 40 lbs overweight right now (i'm tall so it's not awful - but still...) and before it becomes a health problem I want to get rid of this weight. Nothing seems to help and I can't seem to get motivated this time. I've been successful in tackling the 20ish lbs I've needed to lose in the past - but now being in my 50's and dealing with numerous pressures (work, teens, elderly infirmed mom and MIL) I just can't seem to get started. I've heard of people who've had great success with hypnosis but I don't know anyone personally.

I'm not looking for opinions or stories you've heard - I'm looking only for 1st or 2nd person information about successes or failures of hypnosis. Have you had hypnosis, your sister or mom?

Thanks mamas!

So What Happened?

Thanks mamas. If I knew it would work I'd make the investment - but it's $190 for the first session and about $100 for each after that - and it takes many sessions - so it would be between $750 - $1000. That's alot for something that may or may not work! So for now I'm not going to try hypnosis. Thanks moms!

I have done hypnotherapy (about 10 sessions) for anxiety/Claustrophobia...
I have mixed feelings as to whether it worked or not as I still suffer at times from both... That said, I did come away each time feeling more relaxed... But I think it was a lot of money spent to feel more relaxed........

Additionally, I learned how to do EFT (emotional freedom techniques) whereby you do this tapping on various meridian points of the body (as they do in acupuncture) .. if you want to learn more about EFT , there is a FREE Website called EFTUNIVERSE.COM. on the site, there are tons of stories whereby people used EFT and found relief from whatever their issue was...

Eventually, I bought Gary Craig's manual on EFT and learned more about it in detail... The EFT coupled with the hypnotherapy did work in that I haven't had to get off a crowded bus due to feeling Claustrophobic... However, recently, I did have to get off the subway due to feeling anxious... so.. I am not completely cured just yet...

While I do think there are some merits to hypnotherapy, it can get expensive as you are seldom cured in one session.. that said, it's important to ask the practitioner about their success rate...

What I eventually discovered in my case was that being Perimenopausal was what has been contributing to my anxiety (the drop in Estrogen) and of course the Estrogen vs Progesterone ratio being imbalanced so much so that you end up gaining more weight due to becoming insulin resistant... Therefore, I think it's important that not only do you check out alternative health like hypnotherapy, but more importantly, if you can better understand what is going on with your hormones, then that is where I think you will have more success in losing weight and dealing better with stress.. .

Good luck in whatever you decide to do..

i tried it to quit smoking years ago. walked out of the session and lit up.
i think hypnosis is helpful for some things, exploring issues and uncovering deeply buried motives etc.
not so much for changing behaviors.

I have had hypnosis for weight loss. Initially, I think it worked great. I actually lost weight in the first two weeks. I didn't have any success past that though. I didn't find much benefit at all from it, and it was pretty expensive. I think all in all I attended about 10 sessions over the course of a few months. The first week, I did a session every single day. After that, I think I went monthly, but I can't remember, it was about 7 years ago.

One thing it DID help me change was my night-time eating habit. For some reason, ever since having hypnosis, I no longer want to snack at night like I used to. I used to be very addicted to snacking before bedtime. 7 years after hypnosis, I still don't feel inclined to do that.

But as far as losing the weight, all in all, I don't think it helped at all.

Would I do it again? Yes, because I did get the benefit of not having the urge to snack at night, and because I learned some great techniques to use myself, and how to access things in my mind I never knew I had access to (self hypnosis).

No harm giving it a try, it may work for you.

Hi, A day late...a dollar short? You still reading responses? ;)
As a hypnotherapist, I can tell you that the first thing they teach you is that "all hypnosis is self-hypnosis". There's no magic bullet with hypnosis. If you don't want to lose the weight enough to apply yourself to the task, it's not going to come off with hypnosis.
Those last twenty pounds are tough. Just cutting back on sweets and certain foods and exercising more will eventually work -- it's still less in, more out for weight loss, no matter how much you spend on hypnosis.

Good luck!

There's a woman on the twin board that I frequent that has used hypnosis to lose 50 pounds. She lives somewhere in the midwest (I forget) and the lady who did the hypnosis was very highly recommended. I think my friend went to four or five group sessions and was hypnotized to eat only meat and veggies, and not crave anything else. She has been posting pictures and it's amazing, she's lost so much weight since this past July. So... I don't have any direct knowledge, but have watched someone make it work! I'd be happy to ask her for more info if you want - just PM me.

I went to a group session to stop smoking in 1984 and it worked for me.
I would only want one if I had a drink and that only lasted awhile. But eating is altogether different I think because you have to eat and everything we do includes food.
