How to Get My 2 Year Old into a Big Girl Bed

I have a 2.5 year old who LOVES her crib. She can safely crawl in and out of it, but usually doesn't - preferring us to come get her when she wakes. We had our second child January 30, who is currently sleeping in our room, but who we would like to transfer to her own room in the next 3-4 weeks - Ideally into the crib my 2 yo is currently sleeping in. While I was prego we fixed up the extra room "big girl" style with a big girl bed and tried to involve our 2 yo and get her excited. But she absolutely REFUSES to sleep in the big girl bed. She loves the room and plays in it all the time, but will not go near the bed. We have stopped pushing/asking if she wants to sleep in it because it was becoming almost traumatic and was seeming to make her more resolute on staying in her crib. We have options: putting the baby in a pack 'n play in another room, but all the baby stuff is in the crib room and all the 2 yo stuff is in the big girl room and we're just ready to have a little more order. I know a lot of her resistance is coming from wanting to stay our little "baby" longer, especially with the new addition. And if it weren't for the baby, I'd let her stay in the crib until she no longer fit. But it's time to move. I need suggestions for making the transition without making her feel displaced. we were thinking of "breaking" the crib, taking out the mattress, putting it on its side to force the issue, but it feels like lying and just doesn't feel right. Any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

Time to get her out of the crib, number one there is no safe getting in and out, just takes one bad fall. Then there is the new baby that shouldn't have to sleep anywhere but a crib. My Daughter was really attached to her crib, however, I took her to pick out her own big girl bed spread, sheets and she got to decorate her bed. I got her a fun Elmo bed rail and she was happy!!! The longer you wait the harder it will be to get your daughter out of the crib, believe me. Just explain that she is so big that the crib needs to go to the baby. If you can put it away or put something in it to show her it is gone, I put a blanket over my daughters crib so she couldn't look at it. Just be firm, consistent and don't let her call the shots. It may be about her being a baby longer in her eyes, however all the reassurance from you will help that and she will eventually adjust! DO NOT ASK, just do it, it isn't about her choice right now, it needs to be your choice and she just needs to be happy about it and will eventually. That may sound harsh but if the kids are in different rooms, put the crib up and in the baby's room now and it will be easier before the baby comes, I see your due date has passed however, so not sure if you had the baby or not yet. Stay consistent no matter what kind of fit she pitches, it will pass and she will not be traumatized I promise.

Why don't you just put her crib into the "big girl room" and let her stay sleeping in it?!?!? I mean, if that is how she feels safe and comfy and loved, then no harm, really... right?!?!?! You can probably find another crib for new baby for free or super cheap on Craigslist, or maybe even on here?!?! Just my advice, but especially with a new baby in the house, it just seems like it may not be worth the fight?? It may also cause her to resent her new sibling if you try to force her to give up her crib!!! Good Luck whatever you decide!!!!!!!!

Teach her the word "suprise!" turn it into a "big girl surprise".

Everything at 2 is a suprise for being a "big girl" a popsicle or ice cream after eating her dinner. Popcorn and a movie with Mom or Dad. Sticker charts worked well for my twins they would do anything for a sticker and when they filled their card or I had the cash, we'd pick out a toy as their big boy or big girl surprise.

Good Luck.

Maybe a cheap toddler bed and mattress would help. I usually see them at garage sales. Just a thought.

I have a 2 1/2 year old also, and he has been in a toddler bed since he was 15 months. He had started to crawl out of the crib in the morning and not wanting him to fall and hit his head, we moved him out of his crib. My husband and I just put him in it a night and closed the door, for a couple nights he would go to the door and sit there. But he always made his way back to the big boy bed. My only suggestion is to put her into it at night, and if she comes out into the living room put her back into the bed. It may take some time, but she will sleep in it. You just have to be firm.
