I and interested in starting to work from home and becoming a medical transcriptionist. I don't know how to go about doing that. What is the process? I have looked online a bit. Some of the sites say they offer tuition-free training, but you have to buy a few books and then work for them. I'm wondering if there are scams out there I should be aware of. Does anybody have some advice or experiences they could share? I appreciated it!

What can I do next?

Here's what I can tell you: You absolutely must find a current MT that needs help and is willing to take on an apprentice. My sister is an MT from home and it took her a full 2 years to even get to the point where she felt comfortable doing it on her own. And there are so many out there these days, that competition is fierce and it is extremely difficult to get work if you're brand new. So - find some in your area and talk to them about working with them.

A word of caution - this is not a lucrative job at all. And it absolutely is not something that can be done with little kids underfoot. My sister has two kids, and really thought this was the perfect way to "stay home" and also earn money. Now she stays up till 2 or 3 in the morning to get the work done because since you are transcribing tapes, you simply can't effectively do that with kids running around and all that background noise. She enjoys it, though, and finds it interesting, but she doesn't come close to making a "good" salary, nor is this something that she can easily do w/kids like she thought.

My sister works I think about 15-20 hours a week, and made about 5K last year (you're paid by the word or by the page). The woman she works for is considered a successful MT, has grown children, works about 40-50 hours a week at home, and makes about 40K. So just food for thought there.

Good luck! S.

Hey M T,

I'm a Work at Home mom and LOVE what I do. I'd love to offer you another opportunity! It is probably something you've never ever thought of, or would consider for yourself but you NEVER know! I know several in the medical field that are now very successful in this business. It is a business with an amazing company and has set the benchmark in most at home businesses of all kinds. We've been in business since the 60s and it was created by a single mom making ends meet, with minnimal formal education herself...

Any guesses? Its Mary Kay and I'd love for you to give it a chance. If it doesn't fit into your life right now, chances are you know somone it would fit perfectly! And she deserves to meet me as well! It takes no time at all to get all the FACTS so that you can make an educated decision.

Let me know what you think either way! Best of luck whichever way you decide!

Richland Community College has a very good and prestiguious program trainning students as Medical Transcripcionist; they have orientation meetings every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. where they can answer all your questions and orient you in the best way.

I don't have their phone # right now, but you can look at the web page: www.richlandcommunitycollege.org

Good luck,

I have heard similar stories. Back in Dec. of 2004 I began my search to work from home. I looked into it but found the jobs were not readily available and the ones that were required a finanical investment for training etc and were not guaranteed to place you with a job.
I have been with Work at Home United for almost 2 and half years and I love it because it is flexible and pays very well.
If you don't find what you are looking for as a MT email me for details on WAHU. I mentor others getting started.
