Horrible Diaper Rash

you may have to take him to the Dr. my son had a bad diaper rash when he started day care. i thought it was because they weren't changing him as often as he was used to. but when i took him to the dr i was told that it was a yeast infection and could be early sign of diabeties.

Hi! My baby also had a very bad diaper rash. I tried multiple products, but what worked for me was Zinc Oxide. You can find it behind the counter at Target, or possibly other pharmacies. It costs less than $2.00. It's a great product. Good luck!

I am a new mother of a beautiful 15 month old girl...the only time she has gotten a really bad diaper rash is when she was 11 months and I started to give her white grape juice with her water...This diaper rash would not go away,but I found that Hydrocortizone cream 1% used with desitin started to help her...also 1% of antifungal cream (I used the generic foot cream for athletic's feet works best) the doctor told me to use this, but I forgot the name of it..I think it's clomitzole or something like that. Ask your doctor about it. Diaper rash that doesnt go away can be a form of yeast infection starting to form. My baby never got it thank god!! I always have used vaseline....I tried some of that on my 3 yr old once and he screamed. I also use Huggies wipes that are for sensitive skin and free of perfumes and etc. If he's blisteered, he can get a bad infection....have you called your doctor???

Corn Starch will clear this up quickly..........It has worked for over 100 years. YOu can find it at the grocery store.

I know it sounds wierd, but it worked for us... Mylanta. Use a cotton ball and dab it on and let it dry and then maybe put on another coat and allow to dry again before covering with a diaper. Mylanta helps to take the burning sensation away. Obviously change the diaper more often and you can always ask your pediatrician for some Nystatin to help with the blisters. Good luck.

She wasn't prone to rash so when it happened, and it got progressively worse and then blistered, I took her to the Dr. I believe it was a yeast infection? (This was over 16 years ago.) Anyway it required a prescription cream. I'd say you should definitely give your Pedi. a call. Good luck to you and your little one.

Babies can get a topical yeast infection and only perscription medicaion can cure it. It is just a cream but works very fast and looks like a blistery rash.

I am not one to respond but this one I know all too well. I am the mother of five boys one girl, my youngest is 13 and I am also reaising my Grandson who will be 4 in June. My youngest used to get rash really bad, once to the point of bleeding. He has always had very sensitive skin and is prone to alergies. Anyway I used Caldesene powder, it is a medicated powed for babies and is sold in a pink contaner. It has been a long time since I have had to purchase any of this product but they used to sell it at drug stores by the baby products. I also would use plain corn starch from the box in the kitchen, worked GREAT exspecially when I would allow him to "air out" with nothing but a little of the corn starch on his fanny...I would also suggest you watch his diet, some food can be adding to the problem.

Is your baby formula fed or are you nursing? A rash is usually a sign of an allergy. You may want to try and switch to an organic formula if so. Or if nursing or just feeding him food, try omitting something in your or his diet that you may eat everyday (eggs or citrus etc). Also try a natural brand of diaper cream without any synthetics in it like Burts Bees or California Baby.

Your son may be allegic to something in the diaper cream. You may want to see your pediatrician and schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. It may be something more serious than diaper rash.

My son gets this and it sounds like the same condition - Yeast! Especially with this heat and plastic diapers. Take your baby to the Dr and they will prescribe a special ointment that kills the yeast. Also do as much time out of the diaper as you can to air out and cool the area. I also would give my son a quick but soak in the tub inbetween poo diapers and then let him run around naked until all was good and air dry before putting him back in the diaper! Also when it was really bad I would switch to cloth diapers during the day to promote a dryer butt. good luck :)

My son gets really bad diaper rashes too, he even has small scars from the blisters that's how bad he gets it. We did everything, went to the dr, let him walk around with no diaper for a certain amount of time a few times a day, changed diapers, and creams and found that Butt Paste works the best =) I love that stuff and use it all the time and it has cleared it right up. He has not had any blisters since we started using Butt Paste =) You can find it at WalMart, Target, Babies-R-Us and I think some drug stores too. Hope this helps.

My son had a really bad diaper rash after having a stomach virus (he was about a year old at the time). My friend recommended getting Domboro (I think that's how you spell it) from the drug store. It's a solution that you mix. It worked wonders. Also I love Boudreauxs Butt Paste. It's much better than Desitin and isn't as messy.

I hope you dont think this strange but you might! LOL. I am a grandmother to a 7 1/2 month old grandson and the mother of a beautiful 23 year old daughter. A few months after my daughter was born she had this terrible diaper rash. My grandmother was here on a visit and suggested the following as a remedy. Ready! Boil, a head of lettace. Take the water from the lettace and put the baby in it like a bath and let him soak. Make sure the water is warm and not hot, just tepid like he would like his bath. After he soaks, put regular vaseline on his bottom and cover his bottom with a leaf of the boiled lettace, again making sure the lettace is not hot, but cooled. Changing his diaper often and changing the leaf of lettace as well. It worked wonders on my daughter. When my grandson had a bad case of diaper rash, my daughter put Desitin on his bottom and he screamed in such horror, that it scared me. It just hurt him so bad to have that cream on him. I remembered my grandmothers and my mothers remedy and quickly boiled a head of lettace and when the water was warm I added it to his bath and we let him soak in it, then did the vaseline and the leaf of lettace on his bottom. Not only did he not cry but he actually was pretty healed within a couple of days and he hasn't gotten the rash back. Now you may think this is crazy, cause i thought so too when my grandmother told me to do it, but it worked. Try it and let me know if it works for your son. Not sure what exactly the lettace has but it does have a cooling affect on the skin.

Both my mom and grandmother grew up in a ranch in Mexico, so I presume that this old remedy comes from that time.

This is likely a fungal infection and your doctor will prescribe for it - it is important to take care of it right away - nothing but antifungal medicine will take care of it. My granddaughter had this, it is quite common. My friend said her child suffered for months, her doctor didn't realize what it was - hard to believe.

Is your little one on antibiotics? If so, it could be fungal as a result of the antibiotics and would require different anti-fungal medication (as recommended by your pediatrician) and lotsa "fresh air."

It may not be diaper rash at all. It might be a yeast infection. Only your ped will know for sure, so you should take your son to the doctor. If it is, you'll use an antifungal on it, and that should take care of it.

It does sound like a yeast/fungal rash. Our son had this many times and I used over the counter yeast infection or anti-fungal creams. I have seen on TV that the pharmaceutical companies have developed their own cream or medication but I would just buy the over the counter stuff. Yeast and fungus are the same and antifungal or yeast infection creams will work fine.

Hi A.. From experience, you should use A&D Ointment (that clear one). It might take a couple of weeks to clear up, but thats the ointment that I use when Desitin doesn't work. I found that you should use Desitin for before the skins is open from the rash and you should use A&D Ointment for when the rash makes the skin break open. Hope this helps.

Try Capent you can purchase it at Walmart in the Hispanic section of toiletries. It is a thick white cream almost like desitin, but works well. I've used it!!!

Try stop using wipes. Only toilet paper or tissue. My daughter had that same rash and she is scarred but what helped her is triple paste which is 10 bucks for a small tube but works super well just apply a generous coat. i wish I knew sooner about it but yeah don't use anyother ointment try triple paste. good luck i hope he feels better

Of course, different things work or don't work for different kids. Honestly, what has always worked for my kids is not using cream at all, but instead using baby powder with cornstarch - and then even letting him go diaper-free when it's possible. I think it must have helped air out and dry out. I think the cream would be good for preventing, because say, if your child has diarrhea, putting a layer of cream before he gets a rash is a layer between the you-know-what and his skin so it doesn't sit on his skin. Does that make sense? Otherwise, give the baby powder and free air a try.

Oh- and Neosporin - I used that when my son had diaper rash so bad that he had open sores on his bottom. :(

This happened with my older son when he was 2. Nothing helped until we finally saw a pediatric dermatologist and he prescribed a cream called Acid Mantle. Strange name but it worked. Even our pediatrician hadn't heard of it. It's not over the counter so you'll need a prescription. However, It could be a staph or yeast infection so definitely take him to the doctor to figure it out either way.

My DD used to get the same blistery looking rash down there. After trying several different diapers and wipes, I finally switched to chlorine free diapers and wipes. It's been a couple of weeks now and no rash at all.

I know that some kids are allergic to the chemicals that they put in diapers and wipes. For my DD the only ones she could use that wouldn't give her a full out rash each time was Pampers Baby Dry. But still every couple of days or so she would get a mild rash and if I didn't treat it immediately with all natural diaper cream (regular creams would make it worse), she would get the blisters.

So far with the chlorine free diapers and wipes we are completely rash free for 2 weeks.

i understand how much diaper rash sucks, i have 4 kids and my now 3 year old had trep arthritis just before he turned 1 and he would still get bad rashes occasionally, i have tried almost every kind of diaper rash cream and ointments and it got to the point where it got hard to clear up the rash...but i tried my own technique....i would put a cream on (whichever i had on hand at the moment...even desitin) and after i put that on i would then put on johnsons medicated powder, it healed it up right away. i realized how this worked...rash ointment can rub off onto the diaper when the child moves a lot but when you add the baby powder....it makes sure the cream doesnt come off so easily. it really helped a lot. just something i came up with that help my kids and i hope it helps yours. good luck

Both my boys had major diaper rash problems.
I tried to keep it simple:
1. Let their little behind get as much air as possible, yes that means no diaper.
2. Stop the diaper wipes and use only wet wash cloths.
3. A&D diaper ointment with corn starch, it works wonders together.

if you haven't receive an answer, i would go see your child doctor, and ask them to prescribe vusion. it works wonders. or even ask the doctor. i received vusion as a sample and will always ask for it for extreme diaper rash.

My son had bad diaper rash when he was first born, I found the best thing for him was to be naked and to apply jojoba oil. jojoba oil is actually not an oil but an herb and is great for diaper rash. He had the blisters as well and the jojoba oil cleared it up in a day, my sister is a massage therapist and recommended that to me. You need to get pure jojoba oil with nothing in it. Try an udder cream that you can get in the feed store. It works really well.

Have you tried Bordeaux's Butt Paste? It is the best stuff on earth. My son ahs ahd the same problem recently. I ended up having to get an Rx for a special "butt paste" mixed by my local pharmacy. Usually, Bordeaux's works after 1-2 applications. Also, if it is a "yeast" infection, any Vagisil-type product will work. If it is fungal any athlete's foot cream will work. But a dr. will be able to tell you either way.

The first thing you should try is bathing repeatedly. When my kids had this problem, it was hard to find which medication (even tried prescription) was the right one. It was trial and error. However, every bath helped improve the horrible rash. We even bathed her more than once a day.

Don't use Desitin - it is filled with chemicals that are terrible for a baby (check out thw EWG's website Skindeep for further information. On that website, there are a number of products listed that really help with diaper rash. They all are calendula-based.

I use Aquaphor, which you can purchase a tub at Walmart. I put aquaphor and then put corn starch on top. That works for my son, especially when he starts to get a yeast infection. The corn starch takes away all the moisture. Anytime it starts to get a bit red I apply the corn starch.

Hi A.! It's been a while since I've had a baby, but when my son was a baby, he got the worst diaper rashes. I used a product called Balmex that saved our lives. I swear by it. They may have newer products out there, but at that time, that was all I used. I always hated Desitin because it's so thick (and not water soluble, which inhibits bacteria, which in turn prevents the diaper rash from ever getting better)and hard to wipe off, and A & D ointment was one I wasn't thrilled with, but once I found Balmex, I was in heaven, and so was my son. The other thing that helped was the brand of diapers I switched to - called Drypers. Don't know if they still make them, but they were great - in a purple packaging. I think they old adage is anything with Zinc, or Zinc oxide maybe, is great for diaper rashes. Best of luck to you and your baby boy.

At about the same age, my son also had what you are describing.
It was horrifying! The poor baby's butt- must really hurt!
My son's Pediatrician prescribed something that cleared it up
..and rather quickly. It may have had a small amount of Cortizone in it, but it was only a couple of days before he
was alright. It would be a big help to get him to drink as much water as you can get in him. Babies don't really care for water very much, but lots of water can't hurt.
I too, used Desitin. The cream--not the ointment.
If you want to use any powder, use corn starch.
It's absorbant and Baby Powder clogs pores.

I love Aquaphor! Make sure he's nice and clean and dry, and then apply the aquaphor. Possible for him to be diaperless for awhile? If it doesn't clear up in a couple of days, I'd take him in to the ped.

I haven't read the other responses, but what worked with my daughter was changing the type of diaper we use- the only diapers that don't irritate her skin are Huggies (but I know kids who can only use Pampers). Try and find diapers without a scent. Also, let him be naked as much as you can to let his skin air out.

every once in a while, the same thing would happen to my son. poor little guy would scream through his diaper changes becasue it hurt so much. i found that wiping him with a warm, damp face cloth after i had cleaned him with baby wipes really helped. i do this every time i change him when he gets diaper rash and it usually clears up much quicker than if i use wipes only. also, keep using the desitin...the original kind instead of the creamy...it stays on the skin much longer than the creamy. i also give him at least one bath a day when he has really bad diaper rash. now, i don't wash him head-to-toe every day, i just put a few inches of warm water and a little soap in the tub and have him sit in it for a few minutes. it seems to sooth it and accelerate healing.

Wow! A week is way to long for that to be going on! If it's blistering really bad, I would take him to the doctor already. I don't know of any medication off the counter that can help that cause it's too progressed already. I have a 21 month old. Even if his butt is a little red, I go crazy with the diaper rash medicine. To me Desitin sucks, it don't work. I use the A+D, either the ointment or the creme. I use the ointment the most cause with one diaper change, I see results. The trick to not getting a rash (it's not really a trick) is changing his diaper, and changing it often! Especially if he has poop in it, you need to change it as soon as you know he is done. Some of the foods he is eating may be acidy to his stomach and when he poops and that is on his skin, it burns it and that's what causes the blisters. I bet he runs when you try to change him and it's a fight to get him changed. Don't worry, just be calm and talk to him and tell him that you are only trying to help him, just comfort him. He may be screaming but it's important that you stay calm in these crazy moments. You may want to let him sit in a tub of warm water to sooth the skin.

I know you have a ton of responses and need something immediately but for the future, look up motherlove.com all natural products. It's the only thing that works on my daughter.

Try using A & D. It's basically vaseline with lanolin. It's provides a barrier to urine/feces without being hard to wipe off. Soothes the bottom quite well. It worked great for my son when he was an infant (recommended by the pediatrician).

I'd suggest Keeping him clean and dry. Give him a couple short baths a day,and let him run without his diaper for a few hours,like a few of the other mothers suggested. It allows for the air to get to the irritation,and helps dry it up,rather than being moist and sore. Apply the cream,just prior to putting him in his diaper again.Keeping that area clean and dry is your best bet.Best of luck to you.

If it is just a diaper rash, the best thing to do is wash it, dry it well and expose it to the air for an hour or two. We just dealt with a terrible diaper rash yesterday. It was actually bleeding. We immediately put him in a warm bath, dried him off and kept him out of a diaper and sitting on a towel for about an hour and it was almost completely gone this morning.

While I used diaper rash cream with my first child, it didn't help at all and I found that the pharmaceutical remedies are not always the way to go, especially when there are better options. The only issue is some people just don't have the time or patience to entertain their naked baby on a towel for an hour.

However, even when my children had the most terrible diaper rashes and one case of yeast infection rash, I have never seen blisters in the area. I would not assume (as I did at first with the yeast infection) that it was just a really bad diaper rash and I needed to try everything out there. I might have the doctor look at it, just to make sure.

Usually when Desitin doesn't help the diaper rash, it is a different kind of infection that requires a doctor-prescribed ointment. I forgot the name of the ointment my son was prescribed but once I got it from the doctor, I saw it start to disappear the same day. So you will probably have to make a Dr. appointment. You need to figure out what kind of rash it is. If it's blistering, I'd see a doctor right away - that's got to be very uncomfortable. Some rashes are caused by yeast, and you need special cream for that.

It sounds like your son has yeast infection. Try Lotrimin.

Ok so buttpaste in the tub is what I use. Or a zinc cream like desitin with anti fungal cream. And sometimes vasoline to protect her bum when she gets a little blood (This happened a few times with tummy bugs where it's very acidy and so it is like a burn to the skin) Also you could try corn starch with vitamin e. Any of which should work, just trial and error for us we try until one works then cont. tell gone. And it could be anything from environmental, (diapers or food) or allergies, or sick to god only knows. So we just try and watch those things to limit the rashes.

Try using wet paper towel instead of wipes.

I know you've had a ton of answers but I have to tell you, the best cream to protect those precious areas is the Weleda Baby Creme, not the Diaper Creme. Desitin and all the other strong ones are too heavy for that tender skin and it can tear and blister the skin, not to mention it's difficult to remove. The gentle Butt Paste and the others don't do the trick, they're nice but once you start using the Weleda Baby Creme you'll see the difference. I tried every single product out there and many people gave me different ones to try. Once I used this product I never looked back. God bless,

I have a 18 months daughter. Recently she had the diaper rash. It was patches of red colored skin and itchy skin. I took her to the dermatologist. He gave Vision cream. It worked so well. You need a prescription for this. I found another article where a parent used the same cream and it worked.

I found that with my kids, vaseline worked best for their rashes. The only rash it didn't work on was a yeast rash.

I really like Beudreaux Butt Paste. You can get it anywhere, Target, Walmart, etc. Seems to work really well for me at the first site of a rash.

I'd see the doctor if it's blistering, but for the future I would try Boudreaux's Butt paste. I used it for my second son when he had diarrhea for 2 days and it is amazing. I am stocking up on it for when my daughter arrives this fall! It is one of the more expensive brands, but worth the price.... Good luck!!

My daughter had a horrible rash when she was 9 months old, one and only thank god, a friend mine that is a nurse told me to get some monostat cream. ( the yeast infection stuff, probably any brand will do) I used it like I would diaper cream. After one application and one diaper change later her little booty was back to normal, I used a couple more times just to be safe but if definitely worked.

Every time you change a diaper blot the area gently with vinegar and water. This is an old fashioned treatment that works. You might try keeping diapers off as much as possible but at 13 months it might be difficult; you don't want urine etc all over the house. Maybe at nap time though you can try the bare bottom. Desitin is great stuff but may not be the right thing for this but something should be used/continued. After you pat on the vinegar and water and let it air dry then apply the ointment when a diaper has to be put on.

Try Maalox, when my doctor told me to use it I gave him the strangest look but it worked in two days I could see it drying right up. Just take a q-tip and dab it on.

When my daughter had a bad diaper rash the doctor recommended I use lotramin and that worked just fine because it was an antifungal cream. Since your son has blisters I would ask the doctor before using anything else.

If you are going to continue to use diaper cream you may want to let him run around the house naked for a couple of hours so that the diaper doesn't continue to irritate himM

What has your pediatrician recommended?

Use baby powder instead of cream and see if that helps any. The creeam is wet and does not allow the baby's skin to dry as fast as powder.

The best thing for a horrible diaper rash is NO diaper.
I know it sounds awful. BUT wash the area well with warm soap & water. Dry it well and let the baby go diaperless as long as possilble ! AIR keeps it at bay.
Even at Nap time if you can put an absorbant towel down in the crib and just let the baby sleep diaperless it will help.

I am a mom of 5 children and 2 of them got diaper rashes that sounds like the one you are dealing with. My pediatrition told me that the rash sometimes turns into fugus and told me to use Lotrimin anti-fungal cream and Desitin. Use Lotrimin on one diaper change and Desitin the next diaper change. Don't use them at the same time, but alternate with diaper changes.Also,an oatmeal baths helps too. It worked really well with my kids.I hope that helps you out, I know it helped me. Take care.

When my newborn son began to get diaper rash, my husband went online to see about advice and came across one article that said to use a hairdryer (on the cool setting) to dry the little bottoms! I was very skeptical but it turned out that it worked extremely well and that our son loves to be blow dried after baths too.
Also, a friend of mine swore by "butt paste" which helped us but didn't clear up all the rash.

One thing that I have tried and it works is a corn starch bath. Run a bath like normal but put some cornstarch in it and let it dissolve. Then sit the baby in it and that will help to clear it up. They say it's an old wives tale but it actually works. I have used desitin but that does not always work especially when it starts to blister. Make it sort of like a "sits bath" like they tell us to sit in after we have a baby. I hope this helps!!! Take care!

I would call his doctor. Since he has blisters, I wouldn't want to irritate it anymore. If it should happen to be just a diaper rash...my recommendation would be Triple Paste. You can pick it up at Target.

Try using A and D instead of Desitin because it is based on vitamins 'A' and 'D'. It is a lot thinner and goes on REAL easy almost melts on contact. It may be possible that your little one is allergic to what you are using now. I have used both and I personlly like the A and D better. Try it and see.

We had this problem with my now 4 month old when she was a newborn. It was a yeast infection and we had to treat her with nystatin ointment (which cleared it up in a day). I think over the counter Lotrimin AF will work as well. Also, we used triple paste and aquaphor to protect their skin from harsh rubbing from the diaper. A big help for us was to wash with a washcloth and water every diaper change instead of wipes...a huge pain for mom, but much better on their skin. Good luck!

Both of my kids had horrible rashes too. Use an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream, like for feet. It'll clear up very quickly. I kept a tube in my diaper bag because I wanted to catch any flare-ups as soon as they occurred. This was recommended by my pediatrician.

Hi A., there are 2 things I'd recommend that you try. First, if you are using Pampers, consider trying Huggies or Luvs.. something that doesn't have deoderant in it. Just over a month ago my now 6 month old had a terrible rash that I couldn't shake! Then I read in a Dr Sears book that some diapers with deoderants in them (Pampers!) may be to blame. So I tried that & within 2 days it was gone. But in case you don't use those, I'd recommend 2 ointments. I had good success with the heavy lotion called Aquaphor..it's VERY thick & protective..and gentle on skin..especially when your poor baby has blisters! For occasional use on less serious rash's I recommend Boudreau's Butt Paste.. you can find it at Target. Also.. don't over bathe him at this time..it just makes the skin more dry.. and when possible.. let him "air dry" or be diaper free for a few minutes when you can..that's good for the bottom too. What has worked for me is when you change his diaper, let his bottom air dry as much as you can, even try fanning the diaper at him, not only does it help to dry the area a little quicker it keeps him occupied while he dries, and then applying the diaper rash cream, I love Boudreaux’s Butt Paste®, found almost anywhere. Change his diaper more than usual.

You should definitely check with his doctor first, but my 6 month old just went through this last week. His doc recommended wiping with Viva paper towels (softest out there) dipped in olive oil of all things. It cleaned him up well without irritating his bottom (and left it soft). Then we used Triple Paste and his blistered rash cleared up so fast. I'm now sold on the Triple Paste!

This worked for us and it's natural (sounds weird, but is truely amazing.) Shred a potatoe and put directly on rash, close up diaper and let baby boy sleep overnight. When he wakes, it will be GONE.
We did this when my third son broke out in a rash so bad that his skin broke and was bleeding. Worked like a charm.

I would call your Doc. He may have a yeast infection, if it's not clearing up. Your Doc can get him on an ointment for that. J.

Since it has been a week, you've tried different things, and it still hasn't helped relieve it, then I would definitely call the doctor. At least talk to your pedi on the phone.

As far as diaper cream, I am a HUGE fan of Triple Paste. I know it's pricey, but it lasts forever and works wonders on diaper rash. I've had nurses and my pedi recommend it as well. I also make sure that I pat my son's bottom dry after using the wipes and before putting on the cream. Also, giving your son some diaper free time every day also helps relieve and prevent diaper rash. I try to give my 5-month old about 10 minutes everyday. Good luck.

I have a 1 year old that just went through this. I called all my mommy friends and one suggested browning regular flower in the skillet just before it starts to burn. It will smell like popcorn a bit. I couldn't believe it, it started working the first day. I'm not one to try those kind of things but you will do anything when your baby is hurting! Good luck!

My daugher who is now 5 yrs. old use to get the worst diaper rashes. It would actually eat away at her skin and you could see the little raw layers of skin it was eating away at.
Two things worked great for her. I know it is a foot fungus
cream but, it TOTALLY works recommened by my pediatrician. Other times when I first noticed a red bottom I could stop it usually with good old Vaseline and baby powder that consited of cornstarch. Hope this helps you! Good Luck!

One thing that worked best for us was called "Bag Balm" it comes in a green tin and I think it's made for cows or horses or something. Sounds funny but it really worked.

Hi- our youngest had a severe bout of diaper rash and we were told that the best thing to do is keep the affected area as clean and dry as possible and actually only put ointment around it. The idea is to use the ointment as a preventative in the non-affected areas. Don't put anything directly on the rash- especially if it's starting to blister. I have always used A&D ointment and it has worked wonders.

have you tried California Baby diaper rash cream? sounds like he might need some naked time..can he play outside and just run around naked? are you changing him frequently enough? could be from his night time diaper..are you using over nights? also maybe switch to pampers unscented wipes? if nothing works i'd ask the doc.

You should check with the pediatrician, but when my daughter gets open sores from severe diaper rash, I've always been advised to use Lotramin. It really works wonders. I think it's because it's a yeast type of rash and the anti-fungal treats that.

If it's truely just diaper rash.....
Wash gently with warm water. Pat dry , then air dry as long as possible. Apply a generous amount of Aquaphor ointment.

Sounds like your baby has developed a yeast infection rash. The best thing for that would be any over the counter yeast infection ointment. Working in Child Development for 20 years, that worked the best. If you want to make sure, you might have your pediatrician check it. Nystatin will probably prescribed if it is e yeast infection. I hope this helps.

I used Weleda from Whole Foods. Comes in a bright yellow tube & worked really well when we had the same problem you describe.

my daughter who is now 5 months had a rash that never would go away for about 3 weeks.. I tried everything out there, and finally took her to the doctor b/c it wasnt clearing up. What we did that worked, kept the diaper constantly changed to make sure it was always dry. Aired out her bottom as much as we could ( diaperless ) easier i know with a girl, and she was only 2 months. But what i believe was the cure all, was running her bottom under cool water each time it needed to be cleaned. We never applied any wipes, or cloth for about 1 week. After each cleaning and it was thoroughly dry, we applied Aquaphor ( heavily ) its the best barrier you can get. This cleared it up, and i keep a giant jar at the changing station for the first sign of redness.

Ask for Svetlana, she is very knowledgeable. It is bright orange oil, and it is all natural. It is sold in a dark brown bottle, has a scent of a plant, not at all aversive or strong. Moreover, people with bleeding ulcers drink it, and it heals wounds like I have never seen before. My son was literally saved by this oil, his diaper rush was so bad, and you could almost see through his skin. I was saved by another mom, who has made that recommendation. There is NOTHING that works like that.

Mix cornstarch with either Maolax or Mylanta (generic is fine) until you have a gooey paste. Put it on your baby's tush with every diaper change (instead of regular ointment) and be sure to put on extra paste before bedtime. It is very messy, but stick with it for a few days because it really works. You will see improvement after a day. Both of my kids had bad diaper rash and this worked better than anything I tried. This horrible rash could be caused by a number of things, Look at the diet first,are you still breast feeding or is he eating tomotoes, or acid rich foods or acid fruits? The desitin you are using I believe has mineral oil in it, that is gasoline, and is a known carcinogen.
There are Barrier creams you can use that will help, and not using any chemicals known to be harmful like petrolatum, mineral oil, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, cocoamide DEA, TEA, could help eliviate the problem. Hope this helps.S. K., www.healthy-communications.com

We use Calmoseptine for my babies. It works GREAT. It's not a prescription, but you'll have to ask your pharmacist if they carry it. Usually they can order for you.

This may be more than a simple diaper rash. I would think back to everything the child ate in the last 48 hours. If you are breast feeding than what you ate also. Write it down and see if there is anything new or acidic, tomatoes for example or more than before citrus.

The diaper rash may not be clearing up because of the food stuff still in your or you child's system.

Sometimes a cool soothing bath several times a day will help too!

thats not diaper rash that sounds like a yeast infection (yes boys can get yeast infections). take him to his dr (you will probably get nystatin cream). daiper rashes shouldnt last more then a few days.

My suggestion is don't guess-CALL THE PED! It could be something more serious than a diaper rash-possibly a yeast infection-YES boys can get them. My son had one and the ped orders a special cream too put on it and it clears up almost instantly. Good Luck-POOR Little guy! L.

Poor little one. And poor you too. At about 13 months, my son got a few really bad diaper rashes too. They took days to clear up. The Destin seemed to burn too. So I switeched to A&D Ointment, changed his diaper frequently, and gave him cool baths with soap already in the water - then rinsed him with clean water.

My neighbor asked if he was eating any citrus fruit. And he was. He had just discovered oranges and he was loving them. If he eats citrus, I need to be extremely diligent about noticing his dirty diaper QUICKLY otherwise horrible diaper rash.

I have also tried to teach him to tell me when he has a dirty diaper....but it only works about 50% of the time.

When all other ointments failed Calmoseptine did the job! It was recommended to me when my son had diarrhea and a nasty rash! It cleared up even the blisters right away! Try it out!! I usually get it at my local Kaiser pharmacy (you can buy it over the counter without a Kaiser card--they won't ask you) and it's about $6 (but totally worth it if they have those blisters!!) You might be able to get it other places (besides online) but I know that Kaiser has it... Good luck!

Well, my twins definately taught me a lot. The boy has scars from his diaper rashes. They get the same way you are describing. Both of the babies actually do. I have found one thing that works for my twins...we put Eucerin ointment on first, then apply a fairly thick layer of Bordeaux's Butt Cream. Finally, we sprinkle the area with the medicated Johnson& Johnson's baby powder. It doesn't go away over night, but it does shorten the duration of the rash significantly. Good luck!

Try Dr. Smith's diaper rash cream. I have only been able to find it at Walgreen's but it works soooo much better than anything else I have tried. My pediatrician recommended it when my daughter was tiny and she is now 2 and it is all we ever use. Good luck!

any new foods recently? they can give terrible diaper rash. has he recently switched to milk from formula or breast milk? its famous for diarrhea. until you figure out what it is, use a washcloth and warm water instead of wipes for every change, especially if it is blistered. try bourdeaux's butt cream. its a very thick, powerful diaper rash ointment. you can get it at any grud store, walmart, or target. i would also recommend talking to his pediatrician since its been so long, he may have a yeast infection. if so, he needs a special ointment for his bottom to clear it up. nothing over the counter will help. hope these tips help.

Desitin never worked for him and would actually make things worse a lot of the time. There were several diaper creams that made things worse instead of better.
We brought him to the doctors to have her look at it and she said it was just diaper rash. While it was at it's worse we stopped using wet wipes and just used wet washcloths or put him in a quick dip in the tub a couple times a day. Once it cleared up we were back to usual. Every time he'd look even the slightest red we'd put that stuff on him and it would clear up within 2 applications.
We recommend it to an adult friend who was having trouble with heat rashes at work and she couldn't thank us enough! It smells really nice and has a smell that's appropriate for adults as well (it's not that fake baby powder smell that sets off my asthma, I'm super sensitive to artificial smells)
Also make sure you change him much more often than you normally would while it clears up to keep the wetness off of him. You go through more diapers but it's worth it in the end.

It may not be your run of the mill diaper rash it could be a fungal infection, best get it checked out by your pediatrician; as Desitin will not clear this us....MRW

Sounds like Staph, very common with babies especially if someone else is changing him and not washing their hands. My daugher had it, I took her to the Doc and it was cleared in a few days, but don't wait.

I have had the BEST luck with using the Gold Bond Baby powder with cornstarch and A&D. I know a lot of people suggest not using powder but this is meant for kids & as long as you're keeping it away from their face, etc. you should have nothing to worry about. The idea is to dry the area first so you're not trapping moisture & then treating the rash with the ointment. Desitin never worked for us...my son is 2 and this has always worked for me. Good luck!

Sounds like a yeast infection. It can be cleared up by using over the counter yeast infection cream, however please see your doctor first for a diagnosis.

Go see the doctor. My daughter has/had something similar and it turned out to be a staph infection. She had to be on antibiotics for 20 days plus we've had to use multiple creams.

It sounds like a yeast infection--you'll have to see at dr. for a cure for that.

this will sound crazy but bush egg white on baby butt...it will take a few seconds to dry but the egg white will seal the rash from the diaper. my mom told me about this and when I finally did it, it worked great.

My DD had a diaper rash that wouldn't budge, so I washed her well, took her outside, and pointed her bottom to the sun for about 5 minutes. Nothing else ever worked so well. When she was older and wouldn't lie still, and had gotten a rash again, I washed her, put her in just a t-shirt and let her run around our enclosed backyard for a while. The air and sun worked almost as well that time- it's better if you can get direct sunlight on the area though. Sunlight is amazing stuff if you can get him to lie in it for a few minutes. 5-10 minutes of direct sunshine will not cause any problems. If a day or two of sunlight doesn't produce good results, or he's acting sickly otherwise, I'd get him to the doc.

Just read your plea and hopefully these suggestions will help.
1. You could wash him with just soap (Dove soap) and warm water with every diaper change.
2. You could wash him with normal saline. You can get a bottle from the drug store or boil water and wait until it's lukewarm and add a little salt about 1/4 tsp.
3. Buy cloth diapers at least you'll know when he's soiled them.

My daughter got something like that. The skin was raw after about 5 days. It was a fungal infection. You need to get a perscription for Nystat cream. Nothing else cleared it up.

My ped said some kids are just prone and there's nothing you can do. The issue will go away when they are potty trained.

It sounds like he may have a yeast infection. My daugher got this a few times when she was a baby, and my son has had it once so far. Using Lotriman mixed in with diaper cream usually helps, and let the area air out as much as you can between changings...make sure it is completely dry before you put the cream on (my doctor even suggested using a blow dryer on a low, warm setting for a couple of minutes). She also said to just put a thin layer of cream on (I was glopping it no). Hope this helps...good luck!

It sounds like a staph infection. Stop the desitin if you can see a dr go to pharmacist and ask what you can use. Do not use wipes since as the blisters open the fluid spreads the infection. Wash with warm water after diaper changes and pat dry.

Try calmoseptine. It's a paste that they use in hospitals, and it has calomine lotion. You can get it at any drug store. It is OTC, but you have to special order it. It is like $7. Not bad. It is the only thing that worked on my daughter's bum.

My daughter had a similar condition and it was a bacterial/yeast infection kind of thing, not just a diaper rash. She was given a prescription for this cream that was actually cheaper than a lot of diaper rash creams and it cleared it up in a few days. I'd call you child's doctor if it hasn't gone away yet. This didn't happen to my first child either, so I was so shocked when this happened with my second. My daughter had a yeast infection, not diaper rash. The dr prescribed this great cream for yeast infections, and there was a vast improvement in 1-2 days.

Have you started feeding him something new? It sounds like a reaction to something he's eating. If he's recently started whole milk or something like that, cut it out and see if that helps.

If your baby does not have a yeast or staph infection Triple Paste works great. Nothing else was working on my baby until I used that product along with washing my baby's bum, lightly pat dry & then air dry. You can find it at Walgreens or CVS. It is pretty expensive, but well worth it.

Hi A., If it has blistered I would take your baby to the doctor. They may prescribe something other than over the counter creams. And, you do not want to risk infection.

My doctor suggested that I go to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for Triple Paste. It is not a prescription but for some reason they sell it behind the counter. It is the BEST cream ever!!!! It is expensive but well worth it. And it lasts forever. Just "frost" your babies bum with a thick layer!

First I would have the doctor check it out to make sure that it is not some kind of infection. My daughter was on antibiotics for the first year and half of her life which made her prone to getting diaper rashes. The doc recommended a mixture of cortisone and that thrush medication (I can't remember what it is called). Not sure if this is very helpful. Good luck!

It sounds like a yeast infection :( Try using a thin layer of Lotrimin cream under the Desitin at every diaper change. You may also have to use a cortisone cream for a couple of days to help with the inflamation. Two of my kids have experienced terrible rashes like that, and it's no fun. I hope he gets over it soon!

OK dont freak out because usually everybody does when I say the words BORIC ACID POWDER. You can get boric acid powder form, ask in the grocery store or pharmacy where it's at. Now listen...according to my grandmother, long ago with my first(14 yrs ago, and baby had BAD rash)....
One tspn to one cup of water. Shake it up hard until you cant see the powder balls anymore. Put it in a container to squirt it onto the diaper rash. Do not get it anywhere else...and let them lay there 'til the water dries so baby cant get it all over. I SWEAR BY IT. You will see the difference in one day. It will be gone in 2.

Like a few other posters recommended--make an appt. w/your pediatrician right away. In the meantime, try to keep your son out of his diaper as much as possible. For instance, if he's just peed, you know you're safe for at least an hour or so, so pull off that diaper, especially if you have hardwood floors. Or perhaps you can keep him in the kitchen with you for a couple hours a day without his diaper. Also, evaluate how often you change his diaper--you might not be changing them often enough. Change it as soon as it's wet---some moms let it go too long, thinking that because it's just pee, it's not a big deal and they can get by with using less diapers.

try vasoline, Since it dosen't burn the skin and creates the barrier to moisture it sould help calm down the skin enough until it's ehaled enough to go back to rash creams

I alternate between Desitin Creamy and A&D Ointment.

Only a doctor can tell you what your child has - please contact your pediatrician. My daughter had what family thought was a yeast infection when she was about 2 months old. It upset them (mom-in-law is RN) but I took her to a doctor - not yeast infection - could have used every home remedy or ointment on the market and would only have made the situation worse - she had a staff infection and required prescription steroid cream 4 times a day and we had to switch from cloth diapers to disposables because once they get this kind of infection they are more susceptable and no laundry service/home washers sterilizes well enough. Applied cream, no new blisters within first 24 hours, completely cleared up (looked like it never happened) within 2 weeks. We had to keep her naked a lot and rinse with clear water and blotting only, no wiping, when she peed or pooped.
