Hey Moms, i need some help. i have a 1 yr old that has gotten his first diaper rash. He got it really bad. He has been having runny stools and i believe it is from his 4 teeth that came in this week. I need to know how to help it. I have been using Boudrouxs (SP)? Butt Paste. It is great. But he has gotten blisters with this rash. He just started drinking whole organic milk this month and i don"t know if the runny stools is from the milk or the teeth. Could be both. I nursed him untill 9 months and he never had a problem with the few months of formula. overall, it's the weekend and any mom advice would be great. thanks.
Thanks you all so much for your suggestions. This site proves it it so good to know about. I did let my son run around with no diaper over the weekend. I went to Sprout's and got him the burts bees baby ointment, Along with goats milk for the milk of choice. I took him to the doc this morning and it was a yeast infection. Two perscriptions later and the brat diet for the runny stools, my doc thinks he should be better soon. As for the milk, he can't have dairy for at least 3 weeks in order to find out if that is his problem. I am giving him goats milk and feeding him the brat diet untill he gets harder poop. :) Also, poor little guy has his molars all coming in with the 4 that just came in this week. Doctor said that they are all coming at once. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

First, you need to find out if it is a yeast infection...if it is then you need some kind of anti-fungal ointment (Nystatin is the prescription). If it is just irritation then I use plain-old vaseline. I'm on my third child now and I've tried all the different types of creams and I swear by vaseline (and it's cheap). I put it on with EVERY diaper change and it really works. Good luck!

Try organic cocounut oil - from the health food store. It has soothing properties that are similiar to that of breastmilk, and it has natural antiseptic/anti-fungal properties as well.

The best cure for diaper rash I have found is giving your baby a warm bath with about a cup of Epsom Salt mixed with about three drops of Lavender Essential Oils. Then I just let my baby take his/her regular bath and the rash usually cleans up with in a day maybe two of doing this. Good Luck! Having a little one with a bad rash is no fun :(!

My son once got a horrible rash. Babysitter left him in acidy diahrhea (sp?) diaper while he napped. Didn't take him back there of course. But anyway, the only thing that didn't hurt his poor raw bottom was corn starch. The kind in your kitchen. It worked really quickly and he actually seemed to like it. I just sprinkled some right out of the box every diaper change. Now I keep a box in his room all the time. Good luck, I know how miserable moms are when their babies are in pain. And like others have said, let him go without a diaper as much as you can handle it, keeping his little bottom dry will help a ton.

My son was having the same issues and what worked for us was to find a diaper rash cream with the highest % of zinc.(20% or higher) I ended up finding some good ones at Sprouts and Whole Foods. Also might be able to find some online. After just a day using this he didn't completely clear up but there was significate clear up. By the next day the rash was pretty much gone. Hope this helps!!

It sounds to me like a yeast infection....my oldest, who is now 19, got them quite a bit while in diapers, unfortunately, the only thing that takes care of that is a prescription from the doctor. I can not think of the name of the medicine, but it is a cream and yellow. Another thing the doctor told me is get him a pair of training pants and put them on him, they will let the little butt breathe and will catch most of a bowel. Hope this works for your son. Good luck. I know how frustrating it is when your little one has these, they are so very painful!

Blister rash sounds like it is yeast. Believe it or not, you can just use over the counter yeast infection topical cream, it works great for my kiddos! Just apply it at every diaper change and be sure to keep him really dry. If it's yeast, it will clear up with the topical cream in a day or two.

J., my son has only had diaper rash once, but I called the doctor because it was so unusual for him. The nurse recommended that I put regular MYLANTA on his bootie before the Boudreax's Butt Paste, and it worked like a charm. Apparently sometimes their poop is acidic, so an antacid is what works. Just put it on a cotton ball and apply! Good luck!

Hi J.,
You can;t go wrong with Triple Paste medicated ointment. I have had it since my son, who is now 3, was born and it was given to me by a friend who is a pharmacist and swears by it. You can use it to prevent diaper rash as well as heal it and it works overnight. Your chikd can go to bed with the rash and wake up perfectly fine again. It works miracles. You can get it at Target and CVS. Good luck.

My son came home from the NICU after 5 weeks and had HORRIBLE diaper rash (bleeding, oozy, etc.). I tried EVERYTHING, including stuff they gave me at the hospital. The thing that finally worked was plain Zinc Oxide (the white stuff people used to put on their noses at the beach). It's found in the drug store section near other ointments. It's the only thing I use now when either of my kids starts to get red and it clears up really quickly. The other thing that helped was leaving him open to the air, but it's much easier to let a newborn lay down for a nap without a diaper than have a 1-yr old running around without one.

I just get some over-the-counter clotrimazole or miconazole or lotramin (spellings?) for anti-fungus/anti-yeast. Works like a charm and I usually see results within one diaper change. They say to not slather a huge amount but to put a thin coating and massage it in really well. Hope this helps and sorry if it's just repeated information.

You should check with your doctor and ask for Butt Paste- it's a prescription paste that really works. The doctor should also check for infection (which the doctor should know to do anyways). The runny stools are probablyf rom the milk. Is he having any gas? You should also talk to your doctor about that.

Hi J.,
Keeping the area "dry" will be helpful; however, there's something else going on if he never had one before and is all of the sudden getting one. I would definitely suspect the milk. I recommend removing it and see if it goes away.
You may want to try goat's milk instead, as is much easier to digest. However, milk is not necessary to have in the diet at all. Of the healthiest countries in the world (Okinawa and Create), neither consume much diary (if any at all) and they have very low rates of osteoporosis. In America, people drink homogenized, pasteurized milk, which kills all the nutrients and then they "fortify" with calcium that the body often doesn't even absorb. Studies are now showing that drinking milk is actually CAUSING osteoporosis instead of preventing it. Plus, it increases cancer rates and allergies. I would avoid it altogether.
Warm Regards,

I liked the Butt Paste too but it doesn't stay on...wipes off on the diaper and doesn't coat well. I have found that the purple Desitin works the best. It smells gross...but so does a dirty diaper. :) The purple Desitin has 40% zinc oxide where the original creamy (blue one) only has 10%. The other product you might want to try is White's A & D Ointment. Good luck!

I recently discovered the best diaper rash cure, I can't believe it took my four kids to figure it out :) I started using the Lanolin that I had left over from the early days of nursing. It works great, soothes and heals the blisters and soreness.
Iwould also back off the milk. It sounds like the timing of the milk could be causing the issue. You could back off and wait until he is in good shape again and the teeth have come through, then try to slowly reintroduce it.
Good luck!

It's probably the milk causing the runny stools. Try switching back to a formula that worked well for him for a while and reintroduce the milk slowly maybe mixed with formula but not until you get the runny stools under wraps.
For the diaper rash the best thing you can do is let him run around without a diaper for a while. I know it's scary but it'll really help. Maybe put some cotton undies on him so his blisters don't get irritated by the carpet or whatever he's sitting on. Change his diaper every time he's wet (when he's wearing one). If he's a good sleeper even do it while he's sleeping. You have to keep the diaper area really clean to get rid of the diaper rash. And he'll be more prone to it for a while. Oh, and give him baths as often as you can, let him sit in the bathtub or even kitchen sink and soak.

It looks like you have lots of good suggestions for creams etc already. Just one additional thought about the milk. If you eliminate milk from his diet then reintroduce it and he is still having problems, try raw milk. If you can find good, clean raw milk in your area it will be much easier to digest that pasteurized stuff.

My girls only got mild diaper rashes, but before they were born, one of my family friends, who is a ped/school nurse, gave me a recipe for a butt paste that I really liked. It was an equal mixture of A & D ointment (not the cream), Maloxx (to sooth the acidity) and corn starch. If it isn't a yeast infection, I hope this can help you. I also would do the no diaper if possible trick, and try different diapers. Some of the more expensive ones have the absorbancy gel that can agitate poor bottoms. My niece couldn't wear Pampers or Huggies at all for this reason. Oh, and for my girls I would also use wet washcloths when they had rashes, instead of wipes (when I could), just to avoid the stinging it might cause and any alcohol that might dry them out more, and make sure they were completely dry (even with the cool setting of a hair dryer) before putting on another diaper. Good luck and hope this helps!

My newborn kept getting horrible diaper rash, so I asked the doctor about it, and he told me to try this (in order)- a thin layer of monistat, then hydrocortizone cream, then a thick layer of desitin. It worked pretty good. I think it could have worked faster if he wasn't newborn because they go through so many diapers a day that it was hard to keep it on him. But it might work really well on an older baby- not as many diaper changes and it will have a chance to stay on and work in between diaper changes. I know it is quite a process every time you change diapers, but it is worth a try. Good luck!

Boudreau's is the best for general diaper rash, so if that isn't working, perhaps it's a yeast infection rash. These are pretty common in the diaper area. You can buy some over the counter anti-fungal cream like Lotrimin. Even if it isn't a yeast infection, this stuff will improve the situation. I would also suggest dunking your son in the tub for a sitz bath rather than using wipes (when you have the time to do this) it will be much more soothing and get him nice and clean without the sting.

Boudreaux's is the best thing I have found for a diaper rash - unless it's a yeast infection - then the monistat cream should work well. Also, baking soda baths for the ph of the skin. Let him "air out" as much as possible. Put neosporin (sp?) on the blistering/bleeding areas. Add a lot of baby powder to the diaper to help absorb the acid that comes out with the stools. When my son drinks milk, or has any milk products, his stools get runny and very acidic, and his poor butt starts bleeding.
Good luck!

The blisters are because the area is staying moist for too long and also the acid in the urine and the stool. YOu are right it is a combination of change in diet and the teeth. The best thing is to keep the area coated so that the moisture stays in the diaper and not on the skin. I know that some moms are against using Vaseline, but the skin will be protected from the acid and the moisture. You could use Aquaphor instead of Vaseline, it works just as well. If the blisters are bleeding you really need to see your Pediatrician. Usually the rash with teething last about two weeks, three weeks at the most. I hope that the rash clears soon!

My favorite product for diaper rash is A & D Ointment. Get the one that comes in the brown and yellow packaging. The ointment is better than the cream because it really coats the skin and provides a barrier from the runny stools. Every once in a while my son will get really runny stools that smell kind of "chemically" and the minute it touches his skin he gets bad blisters and even bleeds. The A & D usually clears it up by the next 1 or 2 diaper changes! Keep putting a coating all over until his BM's return to normal! If that doesn't seem to help I remember when my nephew was only a couple of days old his bottom was bleeding (he has really sensitive skin and the wipes they used really messed him up) his Dr. told my brother to mix A & D with liquid antacid. I think it was Malox, but I'm not sure. He told them to make it into a paste and coat it on there. It helped immediately. If you go that route I would put a call into your Dr. first just in case. Hope this helps. It could be the change in milk! I notice that when my son gets that way it's because he's had too many of the yogurt drinks and milk or other dairy products in one day!

While your home with him, let him run around naked because the dry air will help the rash heal quicker. It's probably just because fungus grows in moist areas and I have never heard of a baby never getting a diaper rash so it's just part of being a baby if you use disposable diapers.

I agree with the monistat recommendation. My daughter is prone to diaper rashes and monistat can clear them once they turn "yeasty"- usually once the blisters appear and it no longers look just red and irritated. Hydro cortisone cream is good too, but to use sparingly since it is a steroid. Powder once any cream is on- because if not once you put the diaper on, poof, the cream will be rubbed off. And, as I am sure you are doing, change regularly!! :)

Why not try removing the dairy and see what happens? His system could be overstressed with teething, and/or he cant tolerate the dairy. By removing the dairy, you can see if that helps. You might fluctuate back and forth a few times (giving at least two weeks in between trials) to see if the dairy is indeed causing the problem.
I found that letting baby sit or lie in water for even 10 min really helped clear up diaper rash.

My older son had this problem as well. He was allergic to Pampers. Put him in a luke warm bath with some baking soda in it. Pat his butt dry. Ask a pharmacist to make up some triple paste? Or as someone else suggested mix together monistat, hydrocortizone and diaper cream (I also prefer Butt Paste). Sometimes teething can throw off the ph balance because of all the extra saliva and can cause yeast infections. Try feeding him yogurt too, that'll help. Let him have some naked time. If these don't clear it up, get rid of the milk.

Oh your poor little guy....that is no fun!
Read your labels, if the product that you are using has 'mineral oil' in it, it acts like seran wrap and doesn't let the skin breath & who wants an occlusive oil to prevent the skin from doing its job! Also if it has 'fragrance' the product is trying to hide chemical smells.
Have you ever heard of Arbonne? They have a botanically based baby line called ABC(Arbonne Baby Care). Their diaper rash cream is pH correct and is Pure, Safe and Beneficial.
I have had many rashes clear up because the products are so healing.
You have lots of great advice on the diaper rash. If it doesn't clear up, I would consider taking him to the dr. My nephew got a diaper rash that blistered and it ended up being staph infection. Yours probably isn't, but you want to get to the bottom of it :)

My best diaper-rash remedy has been sunshine and fresh air. Some diaper-free time under a tree or on the porch has been really helpful in clearing up my son's occasional rashes, and ever since I started diaper-free-time as a regular thing, he's had none (except on those pesky trans-atlantic flights when I can't do the free-butt thing). I used pure cornstarch on my boys butt when blisters formed from a runny diaper like that and it went away within a day or two. The runny stools are usually acidic and the paste will just hurt when applied and not get rid of the problem. Need to use the cornstarch to neutralize the acid so the blisters heal and go away. that is what worked for me anyhow. You also may want to try the lactaid milk and see if he may be lactose intolerant. If he is, the runny stools should disappear within a week or 2 of using the lactose free milk. I know there are Organic types of lactose free milk as well, so it won't change anything in that respect. I had to use Soy milk with my oldest for a few years as he was sensitive to Cows Milk for about 3 years of his life. It could be the teeth, but in my experience when the runny stools last a while, it is usually a more pressing problem, either an allergy or a sickness causing it.

Hi, J.:
I would recommend switching from the milk to what he had before, or not give him as much of that, just to rule out if that's what's causing the runs. The best diaper rash oinment is that which has Zinc oxide, it doesn't need to be expensive, even generic brands are better than name brands. Use as much as you need. Also, instead of just wiping him, try washing his bottom every time you can. Try not to use wipes, because whatever they contain to keep them moist, really burns on those wounds. Don't use talcum powder, use corn starch, and as much as you can, let him be without a diaper. Maybe leaving him ten or fifteen minutes between changes. You can also apply lard to his bottom. I know it doesn't sound good, but lard doesn't let any wetness get to his skin. Also, if it doesn't improve in about three days, do take him to the doctor, as it could be a fungal infection that requires a different kind of oinment.
Best luck to you!

Just a thought, but you might want to try Gold Bond Powder. It's the only thing that ever worked on my kids' rashes (even prescription creams failed), and it worked like a charm. Anyway, I thought of it because you mentioned blisters, which might mean a yeast rash. Yeast feeds on corn starch, so you have to be careful not to use any remedies containing it.

I found that if you put the butt cream on and then put cornstarch powder, it really keeps the poop from sticking to his behind and protects the skin. Also use wash cloths instead of the wipes (gross i know), b/c they can be irritating to the skin.
