Service people want cash. They notice the difference. Add to the check.
I have always tipped my cleaning ladies and my nail lady by adding the extra money onto the regular payment check I write for their services. This year I was thinking of giving them either cash, a check or a gift card in a gift bag instead so it "looks" more like a gift. What do you think?

separate. It is just nicer to know you have the extra gift. Also if it is in one check it may go straight to bills instead of being used as a treat. I know when I did daycare if the money was separate I was more likely to squirrel it away and use it on me. If it was just added to the paycheck them it ended up in the bill money.
I think your really nice to go the extra mile. They do want cash or check and putting in a nice gift bag is special.
I always give my cleaning lady a big tip at Christmas time. I put it in a separate Christmas card and write a thank you type note inside. It does seems more like a "gift" that way, to me.

I give my cleaning ladies cash. Actually, the service I use is owned by a couple, but they don't really do any of the work. I found out that the gifts I had been leaving in the past weren't actually getting distributed to the ladies in the manner I had thought. So now I secretly give the gift (cash) to the ladies directly. That means there usually isn't a card or gift box or anything. I just wait for them to be alone in a room, go in, say a few words, and slip them some cash.
They definitely appreciate it and I think they like cash over a gift card.
I've done both and they'll notice the increase either way. However, I had one attendant who thought she got a huge raise, and that made for a sticky situation, so I had to give her 2 different checks the next year.
I think they will love a separate gift card though...who wouldn't?
