Hi Fever Lasting 9 Days & Counting...

My 11mo old has had a high fever (between 102 & 103) every night for 9 days straight. During the day it goes down slightly but it comes raging back each evening. We've seen the Dr twice during the 9 days. At first they thought it was an ear infection but it turned out not to be. They drew blood and instead say it appears to be some kind of viral infection. The fever is the only sympton. NOTHING ELSE AT ALL. So strange. We spoke to the Dr today and she said wait it out until Monday. We're going back in to have them re-check her blood & possibly her urine. Currently I give her Ibuprofen & Tylenol throughout the day, but the fever still holds steady around 100 until evening. We're not sure what it is yet and it doesn't appear to be going away. Has anyone experienced this? What did it end up being? I'm going crazy with stress & concern.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sunday morning her fever broke & never really came back. And today it appears that we are in the clear. I'm so thankful! I had so many people praying for her and I believe God answered our prayers. Now, here's hoping no one else in the family comes down with it. Thanks everyone!!!!

Have they put her on an antibiotic yet? It sound bacterial since it has lasted so long. A viral fever typically does not last that long. I would say get a second opinion.

Take her to the doctor as soon as you can. Too long for a fever, no matter how high it is, I'd be concerned.

Sustained high fevers for more than 5 days should not be managed with a wait and watch approach, especially in kids under 1. Don't wait until Monday, have your baby seen tomorrow in an urgent care or ER and ask for a urine test AND a urine culture, there are some urine tests that look completely normal and 2 days later the culture is growing something. UTI's many times are the reason of isolated fever. Also, ask about a blood culture and I agree it would be good to repeat CBC (complete blood count) to compare with the previous one they had taken (your pediatrician can call the ER/Urgent Care to ask for all the results, including the cultures). It will take much less time to get results if they are taken in an urgent care setting than in the doctor's office. If they recommend giving a shot of antibiotics in case of bacteremia (bacteria in the blood) make sure they take the blood and urine cultures before, since one dose of antibiotics may make cultures come back negative. Good luck, and hope your little one feels better soon.

I would take your child to a doctor. That is a long time for such a high fever. I hope the fever breaks soon and wish you all some good sleep tonight.

Have they checked her urine? Or done bloodwork? If not, they need to.

My son had high fevers (103-105) for 8 days straight when he was 9 months old. They checked his urine, and did blood work, and had his blood cultured. He got a really high fever one night and then our doctor admitted him to the hospital because he was acting very sick. They ended up doing a lumbar puncture to rule out meningitis, and started him on antibiotics right away. They also took nasal swabs and tested them for viruses, but everything came back normal/negative. My son was born with kidney problems, so they had to make sure his kidney was Ok, and it was, so the doctors weren't really sure what was going on with my son. We stayed in the hospital for 5 days, and then finally the fever started going down. Some of his blood work numbers were high, so they were talking to us about Kawasaki's Disease, but it turned out not to be that either. He finally got better and got to go home, and his doctors think it might have been a viral illness. So yes, viruses can last that long, but your doctor needs to make sure nothing else is going on also. Hang in there!

Viral fevers should not last longer than 5-7 days. You are now outside that window and have every reason to be concerned and call you doctor for a visit. And of course, as soon as you, the fever will stop all on it's own, probably the very day you bring your baby in.

Even if this did go away, your doctor should know that your baby has been sick this long. Hopefully it is nothing, and this might be the way your little one will show signs of sickness for many years, by coming down with a high fever.

Also, have you been using motrin type analgesics? And did they reduce the fever? Have you tried luke warm baths and compresses? What was your baby's reaction to these home based remedies?

B. - welcome to mamapedia.

Have you gone to the doctor?
What are you giving her for the fever?
How does she react to the medicine you give her to bring the fever down?
I'm sorry - but if my child had a fever that high for more than 3 days - i would be in a doctor's face trying to figure out what is going on.

I think your dr should have already tested the urine. Maybe the ER is a good idea. This could be a kidney infection? I really would consider taking her to the ER. I hope she feels better soon.

B., we've been going through the same thing! Well, a little different. My ds (14 mos) started running fevers a little over two months ago. It'll be low grade a couple days, go away a couple days, low grade, then spike to 105/106. It's gotten to where we're more surprised on days he's NOT running a fever. We're in close contact with our doctor and keeping a journal. 9 days of fever is not normal and usually not viral (from what I've been told, but I am obviously not a doctor). Keep pushing to find answers for your baby. Document everything you can so you can give your doctor all of the info. If they can't find anything on physical examination, have them check for a UTI and then maybe check the blood count. Hang in there.

I would take your child to a DIFFERENT doctor, like the ones in the Emergency Room.

Really not normal or safe for her to go through this for this long. Take her to an ER or urgent care if she cannot see her regular pediatrician, and be sure to mention if she is inconsolable, crying nonstop, drooling excessively, has a stiff neck or rash, shows signs of having head pain, has problems swallowing, acts confused or develops pinpoint-sized purple spots on the skin that do not disappear when you press on them.

God bless.

Could it be Influenza A (H1N1)? My kids had a low grade fever (100-102) for almost 10 days. I would go back to the doc and have them test for that and more. I would ask for an antibiotic to be sure they aren't missing something. Hope she gets better soon =)

Fevers always spike at night. Give her a luke warm bath, and cool compress on her forehead. Call the Dr and let him/her know that it is still ongoing.

They already drew blood, so they likely ruled out most blood cancers. I bet it is some kind of virus. My oldest was sick with fever for two weeks when he was 8 months. I think I took him in to Dr's 5 times and they kept saying virus. He eventually recovered and was fine. Definitely check urine for bacteria, although with a fever for that long if it was a kidney infection she'd be seriously ill by now. Does she act ill? Hope today is a fever free day!
