Ok my 3 year old might have a UTI, she is taking antibiotics now until I find out on Monday for sure. the weird thing is this she Monday she had fever like around 7pm, then at 1m on tuesday, 12 pm on tuesday again. her fever was like 100.7 which is low. Now Wed and thurs no fever. all of the sudden today again she had 100.7. took her to the E.R and they told me she might have UTI. she is coughing and really congested, has lots of phlegm and can't sleep that well cause of the mucus. Is it normal for fever to be like this?

Ok they took her urine sample the she said it was positive and that she will send it for culture. now i wait for monday, if is negative i stop the antibiotics, if is positive keep giving them. now as far as the cough goes she has allergies, rubbing her nose, watery eyes and the cough with phelmg. no wheezing, her lungs sound fine. she said she might have a viral like before. the doc never said that the uti caused the cough My question is if is normal for fever to be like this with a UTI? Or have u seen fevers like this before? she has a cold and a UTI. don't get confused the cold did not cause a UTI. URI is just a cold, so yes she does have a URI as well.

So What Happened?

Ok, let me see if I can explain it better, either my post is confusing or some just confused themselves. My daughter had a cold, fever on and off for 2 days. really congested, runny nose. The pediatrician said it looked like a virus and if fever continued to take her in. No fever for 2 days, then Friday again fever of 100.7. took her to the E.R. and the doc said no ear infection, no throat, no wheezing, let me do her urine. urine came back positive so she did a culture and send it to the lab. In the meantime she is taking antibiotics for the UTI. My original question was if the fever on and off like that is normal with a UTI?
Now to the URI-someone mentioned it and I know it needs different antibiotics but the doctor never mention to me a URI. Im taking her back to the pedi on Tuesday depending on how she does. I hope everyone is clear now. lol

Ok her UTI results was negative so I have to stop the antibiotics and I guess is just a virus

J.,
Just wait for the results, but I wouldn't suggest you stop the antibiotics. Once you start an antibiotic you should finish it all. Just a little suggestion to help with the UTI. Give cranberry juice; that will help her. If she doesn't like the regular cranberry juice then try the white cranberry, it's also good for that.
Wish you the best.

Are you sure it's a UTI, which is a urinary tract infection? It sounds more like an URI, or upper respiratory infection from the symptoms. Usually they can diagnose a UTI quickly, while you are there. Normally you wouldn't have to wait so long, unless they are waiting for specific cultures to be sure they are treating the right thing.

As far as the fever, yes, they can go all over the place. Have you been giving her any medicine? Tylenol, ibuprofen, and some combination products would reduce the fever, and then it would break through as they wear off.

Without more information, it's hard to know for sure. You may want to call your pediatrician.

My daughter had a low and high fever with a UTI. I would want to know what causedf the UTI. The cause could be from renal reflux (that's what my daughter has -- it's where the urine travels back up to the kidneys.) Thankfully she was diagnosed early on (she had a sonogram and a test called a VCUG) and has no kidney damage. She's on a low doseabe of antibiotics for a year and her doctors have high hopes that she will grow out of it. I would do some further checking with your pediatrician. Often times renal reflux goes undetected.

I'm a little confused from your post with UTI and URI. UTI is urinary tract infection, so she'd have the urine culture for that. Any cold, cough, congestion is not related to that - URI is an upper respiratory infection - different from a cold which is viral. Infections are treated with meds, viruses aren't treated with antibiotics. An upper respiratory infection is not just a cold, it's a more severe illness and only the doctor can really know which antibiotic will best treat both things together. Yes, kids and adults can spike a fever from a UTI, but an upper respiratory infection can cause fevers too

When I was a child I had frequent UTIs, sometimes the only sign was a temperature, a UTI is a bacterial infection which usually come with a temp. a round of antibiotics always did the trick!

For my daughter (who was 5-6 years old, at the time)...yes, fever was a good indication of a UTI. She had a number of UTIs in a short period of time (almost one a month), and ended up on a low dose antibiotic,as well as being recommended to a pediatric urologist. She had other issues such a sudden urgent need to urinate, and ended up taking mediation for that also. After about 2 years, she is now free of all medications and UTIs (keep fingers crossed!). But if she gets a fever, with no other signs of illness, then my first thought is a UTI, and I get her to the doctor to check. Good luck.

Sounds like she has a viral thing going on. How was the urine obtained?
Just wait and see. You will spend more time trying to figure it out. If she
has UTI she will be better in 24 hours. If a viral thing going on she may
be sick for a few more days.
