Help with New Year's Resolution

Anyone know of a real, honest-to-goodness butcher in the area? My resolution for 2008 was to eat better (not healthier, just better), and I guess I did okay. My resolution for 2009 is to eat both better AND healthier, and to be a bit more socially conscious. And grass-fed beef fits the bill all the way around - it's healthier, it tastes beter, and it's less taxing on both the animal and the environment, as it tends to have been raised in a more natural and sustainable manner. I've read that Omega 3's are found in the same quantity in grass-fed beef that they are in farm-raised salmon, and that grass-fed is lower in cholesterol and salmonella spores. Anyway, while grass-fed ground beef is available at HEB, I'd like to find more cuts, and I'l like to buy locally, instead of the stuff from HEB, which comes from North Dakota. Anyone know of a good local butcher?

I believe you can find your meat at the whole foods. I don't eat beef but I have seen a great variety of veg. fed meat products there. Also if you like salmon. Costco has bulk wild salmon for a good price.

I do not claim to be an expert but I think that grass fed animals are more common in certain regions, which may be why HEB is importing. Some farms just don't have the ability to feed the animals year round so they end up eating corn based feed for part of the year. I don't know though! Good luck!

Check the Austin Farmer's Market. Do a google search of Austin area grass-fed beef as many ranches will ship.

Let us know what happens as I'm interested in finding grass-fed beef as well. :)

Here is a link to a great local farm. You will surely be able to taste the difference of the freshness. Wen the animals are treated well, then the product is just better. Check them out, they are great. Good luck with your new year's resolution

Amanda,
Whole Foods and Central Markets have grass fed beef and free range chicken. It is more expensive then commercially raised products, but I feel it is worth it. These animals are also raise hormone and antibiotic free and they taste more like the farm produce I was raised on as a child in the 1950 and 60's. There is nothing as good as a fresh killed free range Turkey. I know that Whole Foods has locally raise meat and a staff of qualified butchers to help you with your selection. They like it when you ask them questions.
