Help My IUD Is Lost!!

I just had my yearly exam and the doctor could not find the strings and is sending me for an ultrasound. After reading on the internet there are several people this has happened to and usually results in surgery to get it out not to mention it can result in an unwanted pregnancy & usually miscarriage too. Our health insurance is highly expensive and will cost a lot to find out where it is. I am super worried and really wishing I would have never gotten this thing put in at all.

So What Happened?

Update - They can not find my IUD with the ultrasound, now I am going to do an abdomen x-ray to try and locate it. Wish I could just go with the fact that its not in its place and move on! How long will they look for it? Has this process happened to anyone? Thinking back it might have feel out a few months back but I didn't realize thats what it was. I have an copper IUD in for three years between kids so I guess I just thought it would be fine too. My mistake!

The same thing happened to me but my Dr. said he had a special tool just for that occasion and he got it out fine.

the pill, with it's flaws, seems like it always had less problems than all of the "devices" they want us to put in our bodies.
I hope they find it, damn.
Sorry bout that.

Push hubby to get a vasectomy so you can get off all this mess they put US thru.
Have the babies and be done with it and call it a day.
Who knows? Birth control could be whats causing all the autism.

Yeah... that's the thing about birth control... they ALL have risks. The least risky are diaphragms and condoms (unless you're allergic to latex, like me). Hormonal birth control of any kind can trigger certain gynecological cancers, blood clots, and strokes. Some people get deadly serious psych stuff with hormonal BC (suicidal tendencies). Tubal Ligations cause a whole host of problems (usually mental/emotional, but also smell issues). IUDs (hormonal or non) can embed.

No matter what the form a minority of people get killed or 'maimed' by their birth control. It's the very very small percentage. But SOMEONE makes up that percentage. Hormones trigger cancer in me.

To know, however. About 10-100x more women, when they go in for the ultrasound, just find out that the string got "sucked in", and the IUD is fine than find out it's become embedded. That happens all the time. Another larger percentage (than those for whom the iud embeds, but smaller than the string got sucked up into the uterus... which doesn't require surgery, just long tweezers when it's time to take it out) of women find out it expelled unnoticed (it's just "gone" ont he ultrasound.. usually during your period or pooing it just drops unnoticedinto the toilet). So if you haven't had your ultrasound yet, don't despair just yet.

Not to be rude at all, but that is why researching things are important before you decided to go ahead with anything medical.
I was all for getting the Mirena, but after reading some horror stories on here, I did my own research and I decided it wasn't for me.
I'm hoping all goes well and surgery wont happen.
**** HAHAHAHAHAH to Grandma! So true!

Birth control is dangerous period in my opinion, I am one of 'those women' who was lucky enough to get a stroke at the age of 18 for being 'smart' and protecting myself from unwanted pregnancy.

Be very very careful ladies!! Learning about our cycles and fertility is a very good thing...

I could have written this post. But it wasn't at my yearly exam that they discovered the strings were missing. It was because I had started bleeding very heavily and was passing clots of blood (probably having a miscarriage, but it wasn't confirmed). I went in they couldn't find the strings, did the ultrasound and it was still there....came back a couple of days later to see if they could pull it out in the office (I had decided that I didn't want it anymore as I was bleeding almost constantly for 14 days of the month---very light, but still very long). The doctor couldn't find the strings at all....scheduled a D&C to have it removed....between the time of the doctor's visit and the time of the D&C it must have fallen out as they couldn't find it during surgery. It seems like a great and wonderful thing, but I wouldn't do it again. Good luck to you.

Oh yeah that is one of the many reasons I don't use an IUD. I am just so sorry you are going through all this and I hope you are better soon!! Just FYI, this post has a really good chance of getting pulled bc of your title, if you want it to remain you might want to phrase it as a question like "Help, I've lost my IUD, and I'm freaked, anyone else been there?" Of course you might not be concerned about that, you are just already having a stressful day and I didn't want that to make you feel worse!! Take care, and hang in there!! Oh FYI, my hubs and I have been doing the old natural route and it has been working well, feel free to PM me if you want any more info. Good luck girl!
