I am 11 1/2 weeks pregnant. i started spotting a little last week. we went to the ER and they did an ultrasound and blood tests. (probably overreacted by going to the ER but i have had 2 miscarriages and i couldn't wait until Monday to see my doctor). at the ER the ultrasound was fine- the baby was good size, moving and strong heartbeat. my HcG levels were 108000. the hospital staff told me to follow up with my doctor to check HcG levels again to see if they are dropping, because if the levels are dropping then it could mean i am about to miscarriage. my HcG levels are now at 86000. my doctor is out of town and his back up doctor said that after they see the heart beat they don't worry about dropping HcG levels so she doesn't think i should be worried. i feel like i am getting conflicting information and i would like to know if anyone out there has any thoughts or information for me. i have not spotted again since last Saturday (almost a week ago).

The ER is not specifically trained in obstetrics and while it's true that early in pg falling hcg levels indicate mscarriage, it is also normal for the levels to plateau or decline towards the end of the first trimester. At this point, your bebay still has a strong heartbeat and that's what is most indicative of a viable pregnancy. Honestly I'm surprised that they would even take hcg levels since they saw the heartbeat.

Hi L.,
I also had a miscarriage before my son and I was a nervous react while pregnant with him in fear of having another miscarriage. You need to do whatever calms your nerves and anxiety and if that means going to the dr. on Monday and asking for an exam so be it!! And, make an appointment asap with your regular doctor. It is true once they see a heartbeat the risk of miscarriage decreases but again, you need to do whatever it is that will bring you comfort. Good luck and I'll pray for you!

Sounds normal if you ask me, the HCG levels do start to decline back down at and around your time in pregnancy. Regardless, there is nothing any doctor can do for you if you were going to miscarry so I would wait till Monday and talk to your doctor. I am sure you will be told the same thing i mentioned. Sounds like everything is fine with your pregnancy. Good Luck!

Hi L., your back up doctor is absolutely right not recommending repeat Beta HCG level because it is useless at this point of pregnancy specially when you have had a normal ultrasound. The HCG hormone peaks to it's highest levels between 8 - 11 weeks of the pregnancy, then the level slowly decrease lowering at 12 weeks when the maturing placenta takes over the role of producing other hormones to support the pregnancy.I understand your confusion when you were told in ER one thing and then you go to your doctor and he has different recommendation for you.Remember in ER you don't see specialist (OB/GYN)therefore they always follow routine testing regardless with pregnant patients and generally feel uncomfortable.Have pelvic rest(no sex),hope every thing goes well in your pregnancy.let me know if you have any more questions, good luck.
