Having a Biopsy Today.

Ugh, last time I had one the pain medication didn't work well and I could feel everything. I am having one done on my thyroid because I have a couple large nodules. They can't put me out because I can't swallow during the procedure, and when you are out you swallow automatically. Trust me, I did it during my last procedure and my doc came unglued, cause the needle nicked my windpipe, and then the samples he got were basically ruined because there was too much blood in them. Those results came back inconclusive. So here we go again today... Does anybody have any ideas on how to relax during this procedure? Part of my problem is that I instinctively clench my teeth when something hurts, which I can't do because it tightens my neck muscles. Bah...

What can I do next?

I had a thyroid biopsy before and the way that I was able to stay perfectly still was to look at the ceiling and trace imaginary lines from one dot on the ceiling to the next during the whole time. I only "traced" the area above me, not around the whole room. That way I only moved my eyes tracing the dots, but I had to concentrate to do it so I wasn't paying much attention to the biopsy procedure. If the ceiling doesn't have dots (or crevices) you can "trace", then "outline" in your head the ceiling time, slowly, so you stay on the "line". My hope that helps! Good luck with your test.

Sounds like you need better pain management. Talk to the anesthesiologist prior to the procedure. Let them know you had issues last time. Ask what the plan is for this one. They should be giving you a combination of things. I had a bronchoscopy where I was FREAKED out of my mind! When I was taking the breathing treatment, my hand was shaking and tears were rolling down my face. After a couple little additions to my IV line, by the time I was taken to the procedure room, I was relatively calm. Not excited or thrilled, but relaxed.

Don't be shy about your anxiety. Think of your docs as like an Iphone. There's an app for that! Good luck and best wishes.

I like the music idea. I think everyone would be tense when they are biopsying your throat area. Creepy.

But this time they probably won't nick your windpipe.

Good luck.
