Has Anyone's Child Actually Participated in a Science Fair?

My daughter's the only 1st grader in her school who's project got chosen for the science fair. The projects are on display at the science museum from 10am-5pm, then we received the cordial invitiation for the reception from 5-7 at the museum, where the child is supposed to present their project to family, teachers, and the judges. HOWEVER, I called the science museum for more information so we're prepared, and they said that they really only recognize the child and then there's a reception.

I guess I'm trying to figure out how long we'll be there. I want to take a picture of my daughter and her project, and I don't know what the reception is all about or if it's better to be there at 5pm (which I'd really like to get in and out!) or if we're supposed to stay for those 2 hours; if she's being recognized closer to 7pm.

Ever been through this? No one at the school is giving me any information, and the science museum only told me what I just wrote. The museum itself is very safe, but the surrounding area gets pretty sketchy after dark.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We got there at 5, walked through the projects, getting ideas for next year, until we found hers... she won a first place blue ribbon! We stayed for the 'reception', which was a huge waste of time. My daughter actually said 'can we leave and get ice cream'... OF COURSE!! She earned it :) Thanks ladies!

Hold the phone! They picked your child above everyone else! What an honor! Let her soak up every minute of it. I hear you saying you want to get in and out and "if we're supposed to stay." This is a great opprotunity to recognize your child and to encourage her interest in scinece. Have you ever been to a science museum? They are crazy cool. I'm sure they've built a little time in there for the kids to explore the museum. Which is a great deal because it's a pricey ticket regularly
I know you said it's a sketchy area, but museums have cameras everywhere guards that will be happy to walk you to your car after dark.
Go with the intention of enjoying it with your daughter. I'm so proud for both of you.

Both of my daughters have not only participated in several Science Fairs along their school careers but they've also won them too! I have to tell you that it is an honor and a very special thing when this happens.....even at a young age! My kids not only had their projects do very well but their stuff was chosen as the winning experiment or winning science study and they received many accolades for their hard work. My oldest is quite the science and biology fanatic and her last project was with 4 of her friends who took first place in a high school level Science Fair and this goes on her transcript for college entrance. She is going away to college to be a Veterinarian and I couldn't be more proud of her accomplishments. It sounds like you have quite the budding scientist on your hands as well and you need to encourage that. If she is with you and your husband or family, then she's safe. The awards might be in a sketchy area but I can't believe that the inside of a museum or chidren's Science Fair would be the "sketchy" part. Go...have a blast....let your daughter win her award.....be the proud parents....and bask in it all! This might not be the last of her sceince endeavors and for all you know, you could have a Veterinary student or something like that in your future like we do! Congratulations to your daughter for a job well done and for you as a parent! AWESOME!

I have not been through it at the older age. I was bummed out Yesterday my kindergarten guy had his due...I thought they were presenting them in their class and nope...they are in a room next to their class room. They are going in and the kiddos are presenting a few a day. My kiddo did carnation dying.. so he got to go first yesterday. I missed it. I had planned child care for my lil ones for morning not the afternoon, when he did it. He did everything from start to finish all by himself. i was super proud and i missed it.

So, yeah i remember my parents not liking to do the different fairs our old elementary did. If she will be getting honored or will be needing to stay there later , I would say maybe take a book or something. I remember my sister and i were two years apart so both of us were in the fair. so mom go with one dad the other. and thats what they would do..or my mom would balance her check book . being there for her even if your nose is in a book...is your best bet.

You may get there and get to looking around too and find yourself really interested in what others in the class have done too.

Good luck and if you make it the whole two hours....good for you mama. if you dont oh well....she will have many years of science fairs and projects!!

Wow, your science fair is a lot more involved than the one here. All of the children, through the 6th grade, are invited to have an exhibit. So the gym of one of the schools is set aside for it, the kids go up at a certain time to set up their exhibits, the next day they do their presentations, then it's open to the public to come see the exhibits, then we go and take the exhibits down. And do it all again next year. :D My kids really enjoy it, and there were over 100 exhibits there this year. I especially enjoy looking at the 6th graders exhibits because they're the ones that compete for prizes (it's pretty awesome stuff, even including a small scholarship).

Each of the schools have a set time that they take the kids up to the gym for those kids to do their presentations. There's no reception except for the winning 6th graders. Sorry I can't help you more. I didn't realize some areas did their fairs differently! I would definitely plan on staying for the whole two hours though. It sounds like that's such a big thing for her and the time will fly.

just get there at 5pm and leave when you have to.. the reception is so that everyone can walk around and view all the projects (that's IF people want to do that) your daughter will probably want to see her other classmates' projects and vice versa. at that age, it's more social than anything else. .but only stay as long as you can, then leave.. it's not an official award ceremony at that age. they know the younger kids need to get home earlier and with day light savings, 7 is still kinda light out...so that might help you..
