Do they taste different? I always thought no but my husband says yes...I prefer to use fresh when possible, but don't see the point in buying red peppers too often because they are so pricey for color!
Wow...so do I concede and tell him he was right? Haha, I guess I never knew because when I get colored peppers I use them in dishes. But I will have to pay more attention! Thanks ladies!

I love them all, green, red, yellow and orange, but they do taste different. One of my favorite lunches, a bowl full of colorful cut bell peppers with cottage cheese. If you like the green, chop a bunch of them, an onion, chop a few zuchini, spray a large frying pan with olive oil Pam, dump it all in there with basil and garlic, and stir fry to the tenderness you like, serve over whole wheat pasta and sprinkle with parmesan cheese! It is a great veggie dinner, add red peppers and mushrooms for more variety.

Red are MUCH sweeter. My kids will eat them raw, but not the green ones. We LOVE them.
And yes, they do cost quite a bit more. But I have noticed that if you buy the big multipack, it is often cheaper to get 6 peppers (4 green and 2 red) than to just buy 2 red ones. And then you get the green ones "free"...

They do taste different in my opinion. But aside from that, green peppers have very little nutritional value. As opposed to the red, yellow and orange. I personally never buy green because they are as nutritious as the green. Red peppers have more vitamins and nutrients, and contains lycopene. The level of carotene, an important antioxidant, is nine times higher in a red pepper. And the red kind has twice the vitamin C of the green. so they are more $$ for a reason.

A red bell pepper is a "more mature" green pepper. As a bell pepper ages, its flavor becomes sweeter. Red bell peppers contain a lot more beta carotene and other vitamins than green bell peppers. From my experience, green stay fresher a few days longer and are often times crispier.

Red peppers are sweeter. If you leave the green ones on the plant longer they will turn red (unless they are the orange, yellow or purple ones). The green ones have a more 'vegetable' taste. Red peppers do have more vitamin C than green ones but one serving of either provides more than a full day's vitamin C so not really an important difference. Otherwise they look pretty close nutritionally. I love both - just in different dishes.

yes, they do taste different! I much prefer red or yellow peppers. they dont taste as strong as the green. sometimes you can get a decent price on the red, yellow not so much! the yellows and oranges seem to go on sale much less often than the red.

Red= sweeter
to some no difference.
But they use the red for roasted peppers because it is sweeter.
Color of course is different. So for some dishes, it is needed.
Yes, it costs more! Don't know why.

I use both but mainly the green for cooking in most dishes. I love the red, yellow, and orange in sauteed squash. Love the colors on my plate. Makes any ordinary dish have that wow factor. Also love raw bell peppers in salads and since most of the base for my salads are green greens, I will add various colored bell peppers but not the green because I already have green. Enjoy your bell peppers.

They don't taste *much* different--reds are often a little sweeter, but not a major difference in taste. Your husband may just have more sensitive taste buds! The bigger difference is in their nutritional value. Reds have (if I recall my numbers correctly!) about twice the vitamin C and NINE TIMES the amount of vitamin A of greens. Although they are more expensive, they deliver much more nutritional bang for your buck. Try buying at Costco if you have a membership--they're much cheaper there. About the same price for reds at Costco that you'll pay for greens at the grocery store.

YES! Red peppers are much sweeter, yellow and orange are good too. Green ones have a gross aftertaste (in my opinion) that can last HOURS. They are expensive this time of year, so I add crunch with cucumbers and hope spring comes quickly! I also planted some last summer in the hopes of saving some money, which would have worked if they had produced...

I think red (and yellow) are sweeter than green. However, if all I have on hand when making something is green, then I use green and same goes for the other colors. I'm not an expert cook, so I guess that is why I do it! :)

Absolutely they taste different. Red peppers (the Bell variety, not hot peppers) are the ripe version of green peppers. The flesh is a little less firm in the red peppers, but they have a sweeter taste. As for the yellow peppers, they are the ripe version of a variety of Bell peppers, and also have a slightly different taste.

They do taste different. I love all the bell peppers and think the red-yellow-orange are a bit sweeter than the green. My boys have been fans of the red-orange-yellow ones for years but they took a bit longer to acquire a taste for green.

Definite flavor difference. Green peppers have a more bitter taste (I like green peppers...feel I should say that as some people might interpret bitter as a bad taste). Red are sweeter. They also taste different than orange and yellow peppers. Red, orange and yellow are considered sweet peppers but each has its own distinct flavor.

Yes, yes, yes, they taste way different! Red are very sweet, orange are also very sweet, yellow are mildly sweet & green aren't sweet at all. I despise raw bell peppers & pretty much only use the red if they're roasted beforehand. I've found that unless you grow them yourself it's generally cheaper to buy a jar of roasted red peppers & use them in a recipe rather than fresh & it saves me the extra step!

Sorry to take your husband's side, but I think red ones are sweeter -- no difference when you cook them, really, but lots if you are eating them fresh.
