My 15 y.o. is just starting to drive. We live in the Plano/Allen area (Custer/Hedgcoxe). Can anyone suggest good places for her to practice--both parking lots & deserted areas, as well as low-traffic, easy streets? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi there! I live in Plano also, and I have been through this with both of my girls (now 18, and 20). We practiced in the Collin Creek shopping mall parking lot (on the outside perimeter where there was no parking and no traffic), around Hughston Elementary neighborhood streets, and had a lot of fun driving around local parks - practicing at Stop signs, school zones, low traffic - easy streets around libraries, etc. Starting out slow and then graduating to actual "busy streets", worked out great!

I hope that helps!

Wow Michelle, we are neighbors...... I am in Suncreek just east of Custer/Hedgcoxe.

My daughter took the driver ed course at Classic (Coit/Park) and is finishing up the drive time there. My nerves were better because we also paid for extra drive time ($40) an hour.

The drivers are crazy around here. I took her out yesterday and we stayed on Hedgcoxe, Independence, Ridgeview, Exchange, Alma, Bethany. She practiced lane changes and turns. Clark High School Football Stadium and Plano Sr High School have good large parking lots for practicing turns, etc.

Another thing we did...our daughter was very excited when she could tell us we were breaking a rule in the rule book, LOL. SO, to foster her observance of rules and become better drivers ourselves, everytime she sees us make a "REAL" mistake, we pay her $5. Needless to say in 2 weeks she had quite a bundle but we have also improved.

I have a hard time in the car with her maintaining my patience (so important) and scared to death she is going to damage my car (soon to be hers) or someone else's. She is doing a good job. The other drivers aren't so kind when someone is learning.

In the end, I feel like she'll get good experience driving. One of the final drive times with Classic is the High Five!!

Good luck, maybe we can have coffee sometime.

Mall parking lots are great just because big and you can go during the times of the day when not so busy. I learned in a community swinning pool parking lot.
