Me and my husband want to start trying to add to our family. How long should we wait once I stop taking my birth control?

What can I do next?

I stopped taking the pill which gave me a period right away (go figure) And then i got a positive pregnancy test 4 weeks later. I was never told to wait a month after going off the pill to start trying. I was just told that it might take a month or two because the birth control hormones could still be in your system. Which wasn't true in my case. So i say as soon as you stop taking the pill go ahead and have unprotected sex. Have fun and it might take a few months for you to get pg or you might get pg right away. Good luck.

My midwife said to go one month w/o birth control before we really start trying, just so I could have one non-bc cycle. I'm not quite sure the reasons for this, maybe to just get my body used to not having the hormones. I really don't think it would be necessary to wait any longer than that... I know some say it takes months to really get it out of your system, but my midwife tld me that's false... it's pretty much gone as soon as you're not taking it. Hope this helps!

I agree with the last post, but I also know doctors won't consider you as having problems until it's been at least 6 months. GL! I hope you get a little blessing soon!

Most people will say to wait a month so that you can get to know your cycle without hormones in it, but it varies person to person. Some people never have the non-ovulating carry over issue from birth control (I've had friend get pregnant 10 days after their last pill) and for some people it takes a lot longer for their bodies to even out and start working. Me personally, I went off birtn control at the end of October 05 and I know for a fact my cycle was still out of wack in January (I was charting my cycle... I had a 6 week long cycle between periods with no ovulation) and it took a solid year for us to conveice our sweet little girl. =) Good luck

T.,

My husband and I had trouble once I stopped, but I think it was due to the mix of BC pills I was taking. They sent my hormone levels through the roof and my body wasn't able to conceive for about 9 months after I stopped. But if you're having success with the pills and no side-effects like myself, then it should be out of your system within about a month or so of the last pill you ingested. Double check with your doctor, but I'm pretty sure 30-45 days is the average range. Good luck!!

You may check with your doctor, I am on dapiverah, a Birth control shot and it takes a year to be fully out of your system and make less risks for birth problems.

I think you should go off the pill about 6 months to a year in advance, but if you want to start earlier then that it is fine. My doctor said that you should stop the pill at least 3 months ahead so it is out of your system when you try. But, I think a little longer is better because I and some of my girlfriends found that after going off the pill our cycles had a lot of fluctuation for a few months. That is fine, but it would make it a lot harder to know when you are ovulating and also when you are "late" and can take that fun little test. For me that might be a little frusterating. For us, alternate, over the counter birth control was very effective, but I guess that is the risk. I do know one woman who got pregnant when not on the pill but using other protection.

BTW, I think it is very cool to have siblings that are several years older then you so I think your son and his brother/sister will be very blessed to have one another. Good luck!
