That's how mine went. No bloodword before. If you're fasting and have a normal blood glucose before the test, then they know what the range of normal is for after.
So I just went for my 1 hour glucose test this morning and I am very confused. Please keep in mind that I am so very very scared of having bloodwork done so this is a major concern to me. This is my second pregnancy so I knew what to expect with this test this time but it wasnt the same as last time. This time instead of having my blood taken before the foul drink I was just given the drink to start (and less than last time) and then I had to sit and wait an hour to get my bloodwork done
Is this how it went for anyone else? Im only asking because it makes sense that they would do bloodwork before the drink and then again afterwards to see how your body handles the sugar. Now Im all freaking out that I will have to do the test again and if thats the case Im going to be a total basket case waiting to do it again. I even asked the nurse when she handed me the drink if she needed to take my blood first and she said no no just drink it Ill see you in an hour
Normal?
Thanks in advance

I have my glucose test on Monday (this is my 2nd pregnancy also) and they have always given me the drink to take home so I can take it an hour before the appt, have my bloodwork done, and then be finished....No bloodwork before taking the drink.
Hey, don't worry. That's how the test works. Also, if there is a problem, they will let you know. Don't get yourself all wrapped up in what could be when chances are everything is just fine. Try to relax a little. It will be okay :)
Did you have this done in the physician's office or go to a patient service center (draw station) for the laboratory? This sounded wrong to me and I was questioning my knowledge (I'm a testing specialist for a national lab). It sounds like they didn't do the glucose gestational test: that would be fasting, having the first blood sample drawn, drink the yucky stuff, have the blood drawn one hour later. There are other glucose tests such as the plain glucose test, three hour test, four hour test. If it were me I would call back and question it. I just called my testing information line and they confirmed what I thought.
Yes thats how it's done. When they take your blood after f drinking the beverage, they test to see what your sugar level spiked up too. There is a certain level it should be it so if it's higher, you'll need to go in for the three hour test.
i haven't had a baby in 5 years and i am currently preggo. My glucose test was the same as yours, n o blood drawn beforehand. I thought they did it before too, but i guess things have changed.
Yes normal routine for both my pregnancies. I was afraid of needles until I forced myself to get over it when I was on bedrest and hooked up to an iv for 24 hours for a week you have to get over it or you'll go nuts. Try to find something calming to bring with u to the office music, a good book, iPod whatever just to get your mind off of it.
Good luck!
That's how my glucose test was for both of my pregnancies, drink then bloodwork an hour later. The first one I had to do the 3 hour, but that was probably b/c I went on a sugar kick that day in case I couldn't eat it again :)
Totally the norm now. By the time I was preggers with my 3rd, I went prepared. You know how they say you can't leave? Yeah right, I told them I was going out to the car (because they were watching me like a hawk), and took a nice walk around the paths behind the building. It was too nice to stay inside for an hour ;)
ANYWAY my point is, this is normal, take this hour to read a magazine, take a mini nap, call some friends... if you start feeling dizzy or sick, tell the receptionist immediately. And don't do what I did ;)
When you are having the 1 hour glucola test as is customary for normal pregnancy screening at 26-28 weeks, you do not need to have blood drawn before you take the drink because you are not required to fast (no food intake for 8-10 hours before). If this test is abnormally high, then you will be given a 3 hour test which will require you to have a blood draw before you drink the glucose and then every hour afterwards for a total of 3. Best wishes for good results. Nurse Midwife Mom of 3
that's exacly how it should be for a normal glucose test, no blood test beforehand...for some reason you may have had a slightly different one in your last pregancy. I work for a high risk OB so don't worry, I wouldn't steer you wrong! :)
I remember drinking the stuff first then getting my blood drawn.
Also keep in mind it might have been more concentrated so that is why you got less.
Normal - they had me drink it an hour before I came in so they could test me when I walked in the door and not waste my time waiting.
I think that is how it was with my 2nd one also. I think since you are fasting from the night before that it isn't necessary to check it before you drink the solution. Maybe someone else can explain it better than me?
Yes, normal. My doc's office actually doesn't give the nasty drink, they give you a specific list of things you can drink at home/work and then come in for the bloodwork. I suppose there is a lot of room for error there, but I liked being able to drink a pop instead of some gross glucose drink at the doctor's office. Your body should naturally be able to process the sugar in the drink to a certain level after one hour. If you aren't diabetic, then your level prior to drinking it should have been normal anyhow. If the results come back abnormal, it wouldn't have made a difference if your bloodsugar was normal or abnormal to start with, it just means that your body didn't process the sugar in the drink normally, and you will likely have to have a more conclusive test done to determine if you truly have gestational diabetes or not. IF you have to do another test, see if someone can come with you and sit so you can keep your mind busy on something else other than the waiting and thinking about the test. Good luck!
