Ok to Eat an Egg Before Glucose Test?

Ok, I should've called my dr's office today and checked... So I have my pregnancy glucose test tomorrow mid-morning. Silly question but does anyone know if I can eat hard boiled eggs (with salt) beforehand? Or do I have to fast? (Because if you say I've got to fast, y'all know I'll be up til 2am eating all the icecream in the frig, right...?!) :-/

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Boy, it sure doesn't take much to give me a reason to eat ice-cream at midnight! (lol!)

It was the simple 1-hour orange drink glucose test. Lab tech said I could have eaten the eggs... "It would have been ok to eat beforehand". They don't want you eating anything with sugar, be it refined or natural (fruit/honey) sugars, and nothing that can be metabolized into sugar (like food made with white flour). So now I know... (No doubt I'll make up for that skipped ice-cream tonight!)

Thanks mamas for all your help! I appreciate it.

I had to fast for mine. I thought I was going to pass out from not eating by the time they got to my appointment...had to wait a while. If you get 'sick' you may need to tell them that you need to do it as soon as possible. I should've done that but the place I went to wasn't very empathetic. Good luck! Hope this helps.

When I had mine, they told me not to eat anything before I came in. It was really hard!! You can have water, but that hardly does anything for a hungry, pregnant woman. Good luck with it!!

You shouldn't have to fast if it's the one hour glucose (which is what they usually do the first time). If you fail that, then you have to fast for the 3 hour glucose test. With that said, I would stick to eggs and keep away from carbs as these can cause you to fail the one hour test. Good luck! Oh, one more thing - if you decide to fast, then you need to tell them that. I think they look at the results slightly differently if you fast first.

I would say it depends on what test you are talking about. If this is the first test that is just the 1 hour test you can eat whatever you want. you just don't want to eat too much sugar at all. The morning i did my one hour test, I had an egg burrito with cheese and salsa, and no problem with the test at all.

If this is the big 3 hour test then you can not eat after midnight. If this is the 3 hour test, the doctor's office should have told you that part though already.

They typically won't tell you to fast or do anything different for the 1 hour test, becasue that can be done at ANY time in the day. But definatly helps if you have some protein before hand instead of sugary things. Since you have to drink the glucose drink and that's all sugar, you don't want to add more sugar into your system.

I took my glucose test in the evening and did not have to fast beforehand (if we are talking the one hour test). I was advised to take all meals as normal and simply don't do any sugary treats before as to now skew the results.

Call you doctor's office to ask...
Good luck!

Generally, they don't have you fast before the initial glucose screening. Different for people who aren't pregnant and are being checked for Fasting Blood Glucose levels to diagnose Type 2 diabetes.

However, what they're doing for gestational diabetes is a glucose challenge. They're artificially pumping extra glucose into your body to see if your pancreas is capable of meeting the challenge. Having a hard-boiled egg shouldn't be a problem nor should the salt. It's essentially protein, but it can have trace amounts of glucose.

I'm pretty sure you have to fast. That way there is nothing in your system except that great little sugar drink they give you. Eat immediately after though. That way you don't get really weak.

Never heard of a glucose tolerance test where you did not fast from midnight on. If they suspect gestational diabetes the last thing you should be gorging with is ice cream...this can be serious for your baby as well as you....good luck, you can do this...my almost 17 year old has had type 1 since she turned 4 and she manages....protein effects insulin in your body which is what they are trying to check out.

When I had mine done with my first child, I do believe that I had to fast. It is hard, but you can do it. They are checking to see if you have gestastional diabetes and if you do you will have to change your eating habits. I did, and it will be good for you and your baby in the long run.

I think you're usually asked to not eat anything at all after midnight. You poor thing, that's a loooong time to go without any food for a pregnant momma. There should be a RULE that these type of tests are scheduled first thing in the a.m......with food provided immediately AFTER!!!

Good luck to you...hope the glucose test turns out ok.

If this is the one hour test you can eat that egg!! I just did mine a few weeks ago and my midwife said eggs would be a good breakfast before it. I hope this is not too late! If it is the 3 hour one, sorry, but no food.

I was told by my OB office not to eat anything that was SUGARY the morning of the test. I have mine in 2 weeks. Honestly I think the egg would be fine. Stay away from the extra carbs because they really do raise your sugar. Let us know how it goes :-)

I'm prediabetic and have had several glucose tests. Absolutely you cannot eat that egg or anything else before the test. I've been told to eat nothing for 12 hours but I think before I was prediabetic it was eat nothing after midnight which makes it 8 hours if test was at 8.

You can drink water, coffee and tea without sugar but you can use non-caloric sweetner. I'm not sure about diet sodas.

If you eat, your test won't be accurate and you'll likely have to do it over. No fun. The lab tech should ask you when was the last time you ate and if it's not been sufficient time she won't draw the blood. Be honest, because if the level is even just a few numbers over 100, the next test is not only still fasting but you have to stay there, drink this awful tasting stuff and then have blood drawn in increments of time.

I've had to fast for 24 hours a few times in my life. Even after 12 hours I'd be starved and would celebrate by going to my favorite pancake restaurant and indulge. lol So I know how you feel. I had a CBC yesterday and the orders should have included fasting glucose but didn't. Dr is asking them if they can use that blood but if not, it's fasting for 12 hours all over again. Ugh!
