My glucose test is in the afternoon and im wondering what i can eat before but NOT fail the test. I'd hate to have to do the 3 hour test, and i was told not to fast before the 1 hour, but to avoid sugar. Im thinking i can eat some eggs and drink water or coffee, but im not sure what else would be safe. I know carbs willl affect blood sugar. Some veggies would probably be safe. Any other ideas? Ive taken the test and passed with my other babies, but i think it was in the morning and i didnt eat.

What can I do next?

You need to call your doctor and talk to the nurse. If you try and guess or go with advice from the message board you run the risk of messing it up. Mine was this past week and I had to fast from 9pm the night before for my 9 am apt the next day. Not sure if there are different kinds of tests but this was the rule for mine. Just call and leave a message for the nurse. That is what you are paying them for.

A coworker scared me into avoiding OJ before the test, but otherwise I had a normal breakfast and it was fine. I got an insane sugar rush off the drink (I NEVER drink anything like that) and was terrified that meant I "failed" the test, but they said that's normal because it's so incredibly sugary.

I don't think you "fail" the test though, at worst you get results that are abnormal and indicate you need further testing. Which I agree would be really unpleasant but probably necessary.

Because of the nature of the test, you're supposed to eat normally. It's not until the 3 hour test where you need to fast beforehand. Have a normal lunch and then go for your test. Try not to snack too close to your test though. If you're really stressing about it, call the nurse at your doc's office and see what she says.

Follow your doctor's advice on this. The point is not to try to "trick" the test into giving you the results that you hope for, it's to find out how your body is processing foods during a regular day. If you manage to pass the test but actually have high blood glucose, you are still putting you and your baby at unnecessary risk. Find out what the real story is, so that you can make adjustments, if needed.

I wasn't told anything about fasting before and I drank orange juice! The nurse said --oh...we'll definitely be seeing YOU back here for the 3 hr test.....but guess what? I was fine. I'd eat normally/no sugar for the day except fast for the hour before. Good luck!

It's not a pass-fail test. It's a diagnostic test.
By seeing where your blood sugar level is,
they can determine whether you need to adjust your diet
and/or take meds to help regulate your blood sugar.
I don't understand the "not to fast before the 1 hour".
Does that mean you can eat normally up to one hour before the test?
Vegetables are safe. Non-sweetened coffee or tea are good.
Water is always good, no matter what else is going on.
Please see if you can detach your mind from the pass-fail expectation.
Ask the medical person for some booklets or other material
that will explain the test and what they are looking for.

I am 31 weeks pregnant. I took mine at 28 weeks. The only thing my doc told me was to have a normal breakfast at 7:00 am then go take test about 10:00 am. So basically dont eat in between 7:00am-10:00am Im not sure of the reason. Apparently everyone is not on the same page of when to take test because when I arrived at the lab the tech/intake rep tried telling me I needed to come back because i should have been fasting since the night before. I explained to her I followed my doctors instructions. She asked another worker and they told her fasting is no longer a requirement. Anyhow I took the test and I passed. Basically just call your doctor and get clear instructions on what you need to do. Do not listen to anyone else.

I agree that you need to eat like you normally would. Why would you want to try to "cheat" the test. Untreated gestational diabetes can be extremely dangerous to you, but mostly to your baby. Follow whatever orders the doctor told you to do.
