Hi,

I have been on anitboitcs off and on for about 3 weeks. I am currently taking birth control and was wondering how likely it would be to get pregnant while on antibiotics? They always say the best time to get pregnant when trying to concieve is 2 weeks after your period starts. And this would be the right time and we didnt use protection, so now I am worried we might get pregnant. Anyone have any ideas of how likely this would be?

Thanks

What can I do next?

If you take antibiotics and you use the pill you need to use a back up form of birth control or you might get pregnant. End of story.

It happened exactly that way for my sister-in-law. They were done having kids, she was on birth-control & antibiotics & suprise, baby #4 (my husbands side of the family are very fertile)! They added on an extra bedroom (so nobody had to share) & my brother-in-law had a vasectimy, all while his wife was pregnant!

Very likely. Use a backup plan until you start a new pack of pills.

You have a very good chance of getting pregnant. If you don't have a religious objection, I'd get PlanB (available at any pharmacy without a prescription). It's best when you take it ASAP and it has to be within 72 hours of intercourse.

It is possible, I would check the antibiotics label. Most antibiotics make the pill ineffective and recommend using other protection as well as the pill while on an antibiotic. Unfortunately theres no way to know until time runs its course. If you think there is a chance, you should talk to your SO and let them know you are not going to take the pill until your next period. Taking the pill can be harmful to a baby. Good luck

Here is some more info from Mayoclinic (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/birth-control-pill/WO000...:

Can antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills?

The effects of antibiotics on birth control pills may be overstated — except in the case of one antibiotic, rifampin. Studies clearly show that rifampin decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills in preventing ovulation. However, rifampin isn't used widely. Chances are you wouldn't be taking it unless you had tuberculosis or had tested positive for the disease.

Hypothetically speaking, other antibiotics, particularly penicillin and tetracycline derivatives, could impair the effectiveness of birth control pills in a small percentage of women. Researchers can't rule out this possibility, but no large studies have proved such an effect.

If you're taking a newer, extremely low-dose oral contraceptive, you could be more susceptible to this potential antibiotic effect. If you're concerned, consider using a barrier method of contraception for the duration of your antibiotic prescription.

If you are concerned you may want to make an appointment with your ob/gyn.

take care

lots of info here and yeah it can happen, but the whole two weeks after your period thing is a seriously generalization, not people do not actually ovulate on Cycle day 14. the fact that you are on bc means your cycle is set and regular and you probably ovulate around day 14 to day 18. based on a 28 day cycle (cycle day 1 is first day of your period) and a 10-14 day LP. you are most fertile in the 3 days before ovulation. hope this helps.
