Gender Accuracy with Sonogram...

A sonogram at 25 weeks confirmed that a friend of mine will be expecting a baby girl come Jan 2009. However, many doctor's don't gaurantee accuracy on determining the baby's gender. I'm interested in how many Mamasource Mom's got what they were "expecting". How many weeks were you at the time of your sono and was the determined gender accurate? Feel free to share your story...or a quick yes/no answer...both are sincerely appreciated.

Both of mine were accurate- I was at 20 weeks with both and one was a girl and one a boy.

I had accurate gender predictions for both my son and daughter with sonograms at about 22 weeks on each. My brother and sister in law had a baby girl in April and were told at their 20 week ultrasound that the technician was 90% sure it was a girl. I've always heard that if they predict a boy, it's about 100% accurate but if the prediction is a girl there is a possibility that the boy was just being "shy". I'm not sure if that's true or not....

Good Luck,
K.

Both of mine were accurate. My daughter was my first child and I had a hard time believing it (for some reason, I was convinced I was having a boy). The sono technician told me she was 95% sure (she wasn't allowed to say 100%) and she was right. The doctor also looked at the sono pictures and said "yep, looks like girl parts". So, I guess I should have believed them! That sono was at 20 weeks. I had always heard that it was harder to confirm girls than boys (for obvious reasons).

With my son, it was obvious from 11 weeks on. I also had a blood test with him to confirm (done as part of some other blood testing), but all of the sonograms were very easy to see, so there was no mistaking it even without the blood test! I think I had one at 11, 15 and 20 weeks with him.

Sometimes you just have to go with what they are telling you. Of course they won't guarantee accuracy because, honestly, that probably isn't the reason they are doing the sonogram to begin with. They're telling you the gender out of courtesy. And besides, what are they going to give you if they're wrong? A set of steak knives?? Anyway, most of the time they are correct, especially if they tell you that they're fairly sure. If they had a hard time reading it and couldn't determine the gender, they would say so. Coming from someone who had a hard time believing she was having a girl, tell your friend to relax and cut those tags off all of the pink clothes! She's gonna have to wash them before her angel gets here in a couple of weeks. :-)

I don't remember the weeks, but my first was "shy" doc said probably girl, couldn't see for certain, and she was a girl. Next two were both acurate. Girl was a girl and boy was a boy. Sis in law just had a boy yesterday, ultrasound also said boy with that one too....I have heard the same idea as Karen B though, about the shy factor.

A friend of mine had a sonogram at 21 weeks...a girl...named her Emily, had a pink baby shower with the name Emily embroidered on blankets, burp cloths, etc.
On October 31st, she gave birth to Joseph Woodrow.

A boy is always a 100%, but girls can be wrong (my brother for example).

With my 1st, I was 20 wks along and they got a clear shot of her open legs and could easily tell she was a girl! There was no doubt in the technician's mind, and sure enough, she is a girl LOL My 2nd baby, I was 22 wks I think, and they couldn't get any shot of her crotch so they couldn't even guess
I would say as long as you can see a clear picture of two legs, a picture looking straight-on, there should be no doubt whether it's a boy or girl. But if it's not a clear shot, and they think it's a girl, then it could always be "hiding" LOL

I am a senior midwife student. The majority of the time if the sonogram is wrong the parents were told it was a girl and it turns out to be a boy. The reason behind this is due to when the testicles descend out of the body in a boy. All babies will look like they are girls until this occurs. Most of the time it occurs before 20 weeks gestation so if a sonogram says girl after 20 weeks gestation it is usually correct. If it the sonogram says girl before 20 weeks gestation there is a chance the baby could be born a boy.

Hope that helps.
Lisa
