Frosted Shower Doors GRRRR Please Help!

CLR and Lime Away work great on the hard water stains, but if you are also dealing with soap scum (as I always am) the Mr. Clean magic eraser works the best. I use the magic eraser first then finish with CLR or Kaboom with barely any scrubbing. You may have to scrub with the magic eraser bit but not as much as you do with the CLR alone!

I just received an email yesterday on different uses for Bounce dryer sheets. It stated: to dissolve soap scum on shower door, clean with a bounce sheet.
I haven't tried it so don't know if it works.

I'm probably not going to help you out much but maybe it will help someone else think of what I'm talking about. I believe vinegar will work but there is something out there with lemon oil in it. Maybe it is just called lemon oil. The acid cuts the film and the oil keeps water spots from building back up. Scrubbing bubbles may work too.

Ha Ha I am going thru a nasty shower situation as well, although mine is mold and old grout.. yuck.. I was told by shower guy that the water in Houston is so hard, that it actually etches your glass, making it permanently stained. He reccomended replacing the glass every 10 yrs, and using some type of rubber squgey to wipe off excess water after each use.. good luck.

My doors aren't frosted but I use a vinegar/water mix and baking soda on just about everything. You have to use a little elbow grease for it sometimes but it is economical and chemical free! For my shower I spray on the vinegar & water mix and then sprinkle on the baking soda. After it sits for a minute I take a damp no scratch sponge to scrub it down and then rinse. We also do the squeegie thing.

My DH is responsible for cleaning the bathroom and he believes in BarKeepers Friend. We use it in all the sinks,tubs and toilets and everything is sparkling clean when we are done. Our tub and surrounding walls are the cultured marble so we were a bit reluctant to use at first but it does a great job. We do not have glass doors but we even wipe down the shower curtain and the water stains come right off and it looks new again. Once you do get it cleaned, another trick that we use to help cut down on water stains and/or calcium buildup is that we wipe down the walls and shower curtain after use. DH only has to do a full cleaning of the bathroom once a month now and he's for anything that will cut down on his chores. Give it a try and please let me know if it works for you!

found this completely by mistake/surprise. Tried everything for 25+ years yes 25+.
Blue liquid Finish rinse aid . Put on with spray bottle give 1-2 minutes squeegee down. I use it all over house for hard water. Spots, film from years gone ! It's pricey but it works. Believe me, I tried EVERYTHING spent so much $$$

I don't know what would work best to get it clean in the first place besides really good elbow grease, but once it's clean, wipe it down with WD-40 and it will STAY clean for a long long time.

I use straight bleach. Clorox in a spray bottle- open all the windows and turn on the fan!! Spray spray spray and just let it sit. I let my sit 4 hours or so and then rinse with water. Use gloves and cover your nose and mouth as you rinse. Do this several times over the course of a week or two and it should clean it right up. Don't forget to rinse well. You might want to find something to do out of the house or shut the bathroom door so the baby doesn't get the fumes. My bathroom has a window and a fan so that is how I do it. Hope this works! If not I vote for dynamite!!!

Okay, I had the same problem. I used Kaboom. It's a great product, but if you have a lot of build-up to begin with here's what you do. Spray with Kaboom, let it sit while you put on a bathing suit. Get back in there with a razor blade and scrub off the grime from top to bottom. Once that nightmare is over, use the after shower spray after the last person to shower gets out. Although, I did read some of the other responses and I think I'll try the WD-40 approach to keep it clean. Oh, and by the way, try to avoid any children or husbands with a camera and a sense of humor. It's not good to have a picture of yourself in your bathing suit scrubbing the shower in circulation!

Well honey, that is truely the hardest thing to clean in your house!! But don't give up, I have had great results with a cleaner called Kaboom. It is in a purple spray bottle and it will eat anything stuck to your bathtub and shower doors. Just spray it down on wet surface, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then wipe down with a wet sponge or wash cloth. I have found that Kaboom actually works better on tough scum if you let it sit for about 5 minutes and it is nearly dry before you start wiping it off.

ok this may sound strande but ,but it works,i use 1/2 water 1/2 Peroxideyep the kind in the brown bottle you can buy it anywhere you for the 1st time might want to use it just use it straight then go to 1/2-1/2 it leaves your bathroom with with a fresh smell ,can use in kitchen its greaat for counter 'c kills all kinds of grems so get you a spray bottle and peroxidi and go to work ,it's great in whites in laundry just a capful on yuff stains rub it in to them

Have you tried the gel Lime-a-way? or the Dow Bathroom Cleaner? Do small areas at a time. After you get it clean I have heard that if you use RainX, its repeals the water. Also, I have heard that if you use floor wax on the shower walls it also will keep it cleaner longer. The long term solutions could be install a water softener, and it will take the calcuium out of the water therefore cleaner shower doors.
We have the same problems do. I think when we build our new home we will use shower curtains, because I can thrown them into the hot water wash when I wash my bath towels and dry them for a little while in the dryer with towels, but take out in about 15 min, and hang up.

If you want a natural way to clean the doors without chemicals, I highly recommend Melaleuca's products. I promise they work much better than the products you'd buy at the store, without the danger of all the chemicals! This is what we do for our shower doors:
After each use, we spray the entire shower down with No Work (this is a daily shower cleaner that keeps the crud from building up over time). Since you said the doors had issues before you guys moved in, use a small amount of Sol-U-Mel (about a capful or so) and 1 oz of Mela Magic combined in a 24 oz. spray bottle with water. Spray it on and let it sit for a while. Then rinse the mixture off with water and wipe the grime right off! You can also clean the stall itself with a capful of Sol-U-Mel and 4 oz of Tub & Tile in the same type of bottle with water. It's super easy and your frosted doors (and the rest of the shower!) will look brand new! Plus, you won't have to worry about the effects of chemicals on your son or the environment!!

use a razor blade to scrape the scum from the inside of the shower it should work for frosted as well as plain shower doors, then use some window cleaner or any other cleaning solution to complete the job.

I've heard applying car wax will repel water and soap scum - me, I opt for shower curtain!

You might try vinegar, ammonia and dish washing liquid--wash then wipe down with news papers. Be sure you wear a mask, gloves and have the area ventilated. This has worked for me.

Spray white vinegar on them & scrub. Stinks, but works.

I have clear shower door, but it still get all kinds of limescale buildup that is A PAIN IN THE BUTT to clean!!!!! I used to first clean the shower with Limeaway and the scrub brush. Then I'd rinse it, and scrub it with Clorox toilet cleaner(it was thicker so it would stay on the door better). It worked, but in the end I was exausted! My hubby suggested using a razor blade(a straight one) to scrap off the buildup, and it worked!!!!! Now if we get any buildup I spray it with cleaner, and bust out the razor blade. In between cleanings I squeegie the door, and use Tilex shower spray. It helps alot!!!!! Well I hope this helps you! Good luck!!!!

I use KABOOM (the one in a purple bottle) let it sit for about 5 minutes and you may need to scrub the shower door with an abrasive pad? Anyway, they sell an abrasive pad with a handle to clean tile. That's what I use and it all comes off.

Plain old vinegar! Or if you have the money invest in a steam machine. Good luck & have fun. LOL

Try Kaboom. It's in a bright purple bottle. It's cheap, it's in all the stores, and it works wonders on everything in the bathroom and kitchen!!

I use baby oil. I use a wet washcloth and lather on the oil. Let it sit and then wipe it off with a dry one. If the build up is thick. It may take a few times to get it all off. It took several rounds to get it off the bottom. You can clean the door with some other cleaner adter that but I find leaving the oil on repels the water for a few days. I have heard to use Rain X (for car windshields?) but have never tried that...that would be AFTER the scum is gone. Place a towel on the floor to catch the excess oil because the ground will get slippery if the oil gets on the floor. Good luck!

I have clear glass for my shower, but it also gets horrible. I use CLR (undiluted). But make sure to use gloves because it is very strong.

There were a lot of tips already given so hopefully one works for you. I just put in frosted shower doors about a year 1/2 ago. I bought a squeegee at the same time. Once you find something to get them clean, at the end of every shower rinse them with water an squeegee them off. You will need to make sure everyone that uses the shower does the same thing. I have never had to use cleaning products on the doors. Good luck!!

vinegar and water! cleans everything and is nontoxic! if you can handle the smell, ammonia and water works wonders, too, but I can't handle the smell. use the vinegar and wter every week and you'll be amazed!

I have a glass shower door(not frosted) and I use Scrubbing bubbles( it's an aerosol spray in a green container). I spray the doors (all the glass while I am showering) . When I am done showering I use a squeegee to remove all the water dots from thw glass.THen I use a dry wash cloth( that we keep outside the shower w/our towels) to dry it off.
We squeegee every time after we shower the dry w/ the wash cloth for daily upkeep.

If the doors are the plastic ones, try lemon oil...the kind used for polishing furniture(not the spray furniture polish, but the liquid lemon oil). It doesn't work on glass though(I already tried it on mine). Growing up, we always used the lemon oil and it worked like a charm!

WELL DON'T KNOW JUST WHAT ALL YOU HAVE TRIED, BUT I USE VINEGAR ON MINE & AM WELL PLEASED.

Easy , just use lemon furniture polish or Downey fabric softerner liquid straight from the bottle and wipe it on.

I don't know how to get this to stick long enough to work - you might have to take the doors out and lay them down...WHITE VINEGAR...works like a charm. It is great on hard water stains, but it has to sit for about 5-10 minutes. Also use this if you have a freezer door that despenses ice and water. There is usually a tray that gets gross and you can soak that too.

I would recommend lemon juice. I have frosted glass my bathroom windows. The previous owner had tried to clean them without success and there was lime and gunk in all of the little grooves. It took a toothbrush and some elbow grease the first time, but now it sparkles. Now, I can just wipe it down with lemon juice on a rag and it comes clean.

I tried vinegar, which I use for the majority of my cleaning, but the lemon juice worked A LOT faster. Hopefully you won't need to break out the toothbrush! Hope this helps :)

This is going to sound very odd and you have to be VERY careful using it, but Lysol Toilet Bowl cleaner (or any liquid bowl cleaner) works very well. Apply straight from the bottle, let sit for a minute and wipe off with something like a Cello pad, or rough abrasive dish cleaner. Then rinse well. You MUST make sure the area is well ventilated and use rubber gloves. I got the tip from a maid service and have used it for years. Good luck.

I use Grease lightning. It works GREAT! You can find it in wal-Mart in the cleaning products section. IT costs under 4 dollars and I use it to clean everything in my house. From dishes to clothes, to bathrooms, everywhere you can imagine. For our Shower, we did buy a squeege to wipe of the water after we shower. I only use the Grease lightning every two weeks. Try it hpe it works for you.
