First Trimester Screen - Positive Result

Last Friday, I went for my first trimester screen. My doctor didn't require them when I was pregnant with my first child, so this was new to me. The lady doing the sonogram said the baby looked fine on her end, but that my results had to be combined with my blood test to get my results. I didn't think much about it, until my doctor called this afternoon. She said that I had a positive result - 1/213 chance that my baby may have down syndrome. She sounded very positive, that this was still a really small chance, but said they consider any chance more than 1/300 positive, so we will do more testing. We set an appointment for a 15 week sono with a paranatologist, and discussed the possibility of the amnio. She said she doesn't usually recommend the amnio unless it affects what we do with the pregnancy. Its not a question in my mind - we are keeping the baby no matter what, so we decided not to do that. If possible, I would like to be prepared if my baby has down syndrome, though, so I'm comfortable with the other sono.
So, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has been through this. I really don't think I'm freaking out about it. I thought I'd lost this baby 4 weeks ago, and since then, God has given me such a peace about the pregnancy, but I can't help thinking about it.
I'm just not sure exactly what it all means. I asked my doctor if its my body that's affecting the baby, and she said no, its jut this pregnancy. If I were to get pregnant again, it could have totally different numbers. I wish I had known with my first child, so I'd just have something to compare it to.
Anyways - thanks in advance for the help. I'm not sure what I'm asking, but any info would be great!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the advice so far. Please keep it coming. The encouragement is great! I am so blessed to have such a supportive husband and family, and know that if God chooses to give us a child with down syndrome, that He just trusts us enough to take care of him/her...what an honor! I slept really well last night - didn't stay up worrying and am really at peace with it all. We will go for the sono with the perinatologist March 23rd, so I will update what happened then, but I can't live life in fear. I decided there's probably a higher chance of me or someone I love being in a serious car accident today than 1/213 chance, and I can't worry everyday about that. We are still super-excited about this child and all that he/she will bring to our lives with everything that makes that child unique.
Thanks again!

K.,
You are very strong woman and I admire that. I wouldn't abort my child either. God will always be with you and I can tell you know this. I don't believe in abortion, that's just me, I do think with the technology, we should take advantage of it. I know there are people who still wait to see if their child is a girl or boy, they wouldn't tell me with my first or second, they only did one ultrasound and it was too early to determine. My last doctor waited until the sex could be known, and I'm grateful to her for that. I think it's great to be prepared for anything in life, including our children. My prayers are with you. I'm glad you do have peace, no matter what God knew you are the right mother for you child you are carrying. God Bless YOU and your baby!

K.,
I have personally known 2 women who had the "positive" Down's syndrome blood test, but they both ended up having babies that did not have Down's. Both babies were very healthy. I hope that you will have the same result. Bless you for loving and wanting your baby no matter what health issues he or she might face.

I received similar results. When the doctor called me to discuss the option of an amnio, he said there is always a slight risk of losing a pregnancy when an amnio is completed. Like you, I knew the results would make no difference as we had already fallen in love with our baby and knew she was a gift from God. I pray that you will "Let [God] have all your worries and cares, for he is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you." 1 Peter 5:7

Hi K.,

I think it's wonderful you are not letting the test determine whether or not to keep your baby! What a lucky child he/she is. : )
When I was pregnant with my 3rd child I did the first trimester screening and also got a similar result like yours. The first sono came out normal and after doing blood work my OB called and sounded very concerned and encouraged me to do more testing. I was SHOCKED! I was 24 yrs old and thought there's no way possible at my age could my baby have down syndrome.
So I went in for the amnio (scared to death) and the amnio sono doctor told me my chances were around 1/200 so after doing the amnio I got my results back about a week later saying my baby did not have down.
I was relieved only because I do not think I was prepared to take care of a child with down at my age, having two other young children at home and the way my life was going at that time.

So, what did I learn from the test is that first, I will NEVER have the screening done with any other pregnancy because it's not worth all of the fear and worries I went through and second, I learned it is very common to get posotive results with your first screening which is why I don't understand why they're even doing the test anymore.
I think it causes to much stress and concerns on people even if they decide to keep their baby no matter what the result says, it still causes some worry.
I would advise you to not do the amnio if you are going to keep your baby no matter what the results are because as your baby grows, you can get level 2 sonos done that can also measure bone growth in the babys facial features which can help you know before birth if he/she has down.

Good luck and I wish you the best with your new blessing!

On my first pregnancy I received a false positive. Everything came out just fine and my son is a very healthy acitve two year old. I've had several friends who received false positives as well. My doctor told me that false positives were common but after you have your sono with the perinatologist you will know more since that is one of their specialties.
