First Period After Childbirth

My youngest child is 10 weeks old and I still haven't started my period. I have been experiencing cramps (off and on) for a few weeks now. When I went for my check-up when my daughter was 6 weeks old, my ob said "Any time now". My husband and I have been using a condom for protection, but I'm starting to freak out. Has anyone (I'm 37) started their period THIS late? My memory seems to be going with age......:)

What can I do next?

Hi Kim,

I know how you feel. I've been getting my period every month since my baby boy was born (he is now 6 months) and now I have skipped a month. I am a almost 2 weeks late with no symptoms at all. I did have symtoms last month at the end of the month like normal so I expected my period any day, but so far I have not started. We too have been using condomns. I am trying not to freak out because I am still nursing my son so I am just thinking that is prob throwing off my cycle.. (I certainly hope so) not ready for another one! If I don't get it in another week I'll prob take a test just for peace of mind. Walgreens has one in a pack for real cheap... Good Luck.. I'm sure your cycle is probably off from the pregnancy and crazy hormones!

Hi K.,

I didn't get my first period until 14 weeks PP. Its completely normal to not get it back right away. And like the others have said, if you are breastfeeding, many moms don't get their period back until after they have stopped breastfeeding.

If you are really concerned, you could get a pregnancy test. But I bet your body is still trying to get back to normal and your period will return in the next month or so.

Hang in there!

Are you breastfeeding? I was for a while. With my son I didn't get a period until he was 5 months and with my daughter it was 7 months. I'm not sure what normal is if you're not breastfeeding, but I'm sure it varies. Call your Dr. if you are really concerned!

Hi K.,

I don't know if you are breastfeeding or not, but I do know that if you breastfeed, you're more likely to get your period much, much later, such as when you are done breastfeeding!

That said, I breastfed my son for 6 months (and actually started to wean him a little before that.) I expected to start my period shortly after. However, my little boy was 9 months old before I got my period! That's a full 3 months after I weaned him! So who knows...maybe you'll get your period in another 2 weeks, or maybe even longer than that!! Of course you can always call your doctor if you are concerned, but I wouldn't worry about it at all. Good luck!

Hi Kim, I din't get my period until my child was 14 weeks old, I know many other moms that it did not return until 8-9months after child birth. Just be aware that it does come back in full force. I went on birth control to make it more regular and less painful and heavy.

Are you breastfeeding? When I was breastfeeding my kids, my period didn't start until they were weaned completely to a bottle or a sippy cup. My doctor told me that the hormones with breastfeeding can delay your period, but that doesn't mean that you can't get pregnant during that time.

If you are just bottle feeding, then I'm not sure, sorry.
