Could I Be Pregnant? - Snellville, GA

Hi, I am currently weaning my twelve month old son, and yesterday I got what I thought was my first period since I was pregnant. However, I had no cramps or pain like in the past, and it stopped by yesterday evening. I've been tired lately, but I was just wondering if anyone else had had a period after breastfeeding, and if it was normal to be very light, or if I should break out the old EPT ... Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I took the pregnancy test, and a few minutes later it revealed that I was NOT pregnant. However, I am still going to go see my OB/GYN just to make sure everything is a-okay. Thanks to everyone who offered advice!

Go to the Dollar Tree and stock up on Pregnancy tests so you don't ever have to worry. Just take one...

I can relate although I breastfed my 4th child a little too long when I had my first period it was because my body knew it was time not because I had stopped breastfeeding and I actually bleed for a month straight but it wasn't a normal period and I think you are fine too it's just your body trying to level back out to normal and you are still producing some hormones since your still breastfeeding so expect it to take a litle while to get back on track you will fine TC H. I would probably take the pregnancy test to be on the safe side. I know everyone's body is different, but for your baby to be a year old and not have gotten your cycle already is kind of a long time. I have 2 kids, both of them were breastfed and with both of them, I had my period before they were 3 months. Most women that i know that have had children have had their cycles pretty early on also.

hello Lona,
I am not saying you should not break out the ept but I can say that I did the same thing when I started weaning my now 3 year old child. ( he was 1 at the time). I had no cycles until then and then just had that short one in the beginning and then it went on. I also did that when I started bottle feeding and breast feeding my baby because of the hormone change(so my doctor says) Everyone is different. I did not have cycles as long as I nursed only when I started weaning and I have 5 kids .good luck to ya!

Hi Lona,
Get the test just to put your mind at ease but, I am still breastfeeding my almost 7 month old and have had 2 really light periods...if you can even call them that. I spotted for a couple hours both times and that was it. I took like 5 pregnancy tests though cause I thought that I might have been pregnant. Crazy stuff....

When you begin to wean your child off of breastfeeding your cycle begins to return and not usually all at once. I noticed some of the other Mom's responses were that they had it return much sooner, but I also think it depends on how often you are breastfeeding. Mine would not take the bottle so I was full fleged breastfeeding and my period did not return at all until I was weaning. I realized when I started getting my period again it was shorter and then I actually had it a bit worse the next few months - ALL Moms are different though. I did notice my cramping after my two children was MUCH better, but my cycle went to every 26 days instead of 28 (GREAT - lol). Anyway, my best bet to tell if I "might" be pregnant was that my boobs became more sensitive and I was tired alot more. Good luck with everything and I wouldn't worry until next month, BUT just so you know (I've been told alot of the dollar stores carry pregnancy type tests and they all seem to work just as good as the more expensive ones - and for a dollar and peace of mind - it wouldn't hurt if you are still concerned). Have a GREAT day! ~C.

Hello. I breastfed my daughter until she was a year old. But I did get a short, light period when she was about 9 months old. It was so light and short I barely paid any attention to it. Let's just say I have 2 kids 18 months apart. She was 9 months when I became pregant. She is now 3 1/2 years-old and my son is 2 years-old.

I would break out the EPT. Good luck!!

Honestly, it could be period or you could be pregnant. (HA, I know that doesn't help much.) Your period doesn't come back all regular after you have a baby, so it could be that. But at the same time, you could have breakthrough bleeding from a pregnancy. If I was in your situation, I would take a test, just to be sure. It wouldn't hurt anything and that way you would know for sure. And if you are pregnant, don't worry, haveing two close together isn't all that bad. I did it and I can't wait to do it again. Hope everything turns out ok. Good Luck.

It's very common for your period to be sporadic as you wean. Your body is adjusting to the change in hormone. You can get pregnant, but it doesn't sound like you are.

I honestly had my first period when my son was 4 or 5 months old. I nursed him till he was 15 months old so I am not sure what to tell you. If you are not on birth control I would recommend taking a pregnancy test. Let us know what happens. Good luck.

Dear Lona,

I just weaned my 11 1/2 month old son from breastfeeding and recently got my first period too. Mine was also really light, lasted 3 days, and snuck up on me w/o the usuasl PMS symptoms. But just to be on the safe side, I might take a test. I know of 3 women who thought that they had gotten their period and it turned out that they had another little bun in the oven. And if you are pregnant, CONGRATS!

Hi Lona, I am glad to hear another mom breastfeeding as long as me. I have a 13 month old that I feed twice a day now trying to wean and he does not seem interested. I got my period at about 6 months. It was kind of heavy at first, but the last 2 months it has been very light with no cramping and only lasting about 2 days. I am not pregnant but during the weaning process cutting out each feeding has made me feel very different and tired some.

Congratulations if you are. Your children will grow up very close. Mine are 19 months apart. The second one came along 6 weeks after I weaned the first one!!! Make sure you use Birth control if you are not ready for another one and the Mirena Pill did not work for me after breastfeeding. My second one came along on Mirena. I have an IUD for now.

You may want to break out that EPT. I was breastfeeding my 3 month old son when I got pregnant with #2. I had stopped bleeding by my 6 week appointment, but afterward I bled for a while. The dr said I would a little, but I think it could have been a period. Then about 1 month later I bled a little more. It was very light - nothing like normal though so I thought it could just be from the birth still. But 4 months later I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant! I had my baby girl 7 weeks ago and now I am so glad my 2 are so close in age. (-: Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to take a test because it's very possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding. (-:
