Period Not Back Yet

Hello everyone! I breastfed my youngest son for a year. I didn't have a period for the duration. I weaned him off the breast on July 22. A few days later, a felt like I was going to have my period (cramping sensation) but nothing happened. I was wondering if there are any moms out there who breastfed for a long who could share with me how long it took for their period to start again. I use protection with my husband, so I really don't think I'm pregnant again. How long should I wait before talking to my OB about it? I welcome any input!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all, thank you everyone for your input, I really appreciate. You know how they say all you have to do is talk about something for it to happen? Well I got my period last night. I kind of wish it held out for a few months but hey, what can you do? So the curse is back and with it: mood swings... poor hubby feeling the pain too! lol!

I'm still breastfeeding my 13 month old and I got my period back within 3 months of giving birth. All I can say is Lucky You!! My OB did tell me that it can take up several months after stopping, if that's any help.

Everyone is different but my doctor said it could take six months for my cycle to become regular. With each kid it was not quite the same. By the time I quit breastfeeding my third, I was disappointed to begin my period within 7 months of having him. Enjoy it while you can!

I think it would vary from women to women. I breastfed my son for 16 1/2mths and 2 mths after he was born I got my period back. I heard some women could take along time after they ween from breastfeeding before they get their period back. You can always call your OB and check to be on the safe side. Its all about the hormones in the body and the body getting back to normal.

I breastfed my two boys for a year. I never had a period during the whole time I was nursing them and it took 4-6 months for me to start having a period again once they were completely weaned. I think what you are experiencing is completely normal and I wouldn't start to worry for a while.

Hi C.,

I was in your same situation. Breastfed for 1 year with no period. It took me until the 3rd month to get my period once I stopped (& I got pregnant)!! :) I wouldn't worry. Take Care.

It's been 6 months since I weaned my son and I still have cramping/spotting, but no full blown period. Of course, I'm beginning to wonder if I need to call my OB so I'll be reading other responses, but that's my experience!

Hi C.,
What you are experiencing is totally normal. It may take another month or so before your cycle begins and starts to be regular. I breastfed my daughter for 17 months and it took about 3 or 4 months before I had my first period. It is completely back to normal now 5 months later. So, enjoy it while you can!!! It will be here soon enough!

I did not have the good fortune to not get my period while nursing (I always started about 6 weeks postpartum, despite nursing,) but I have a really good friend who was like you. She had 8 babies in all and nursed until at least the first year mark with all. We always joked whether she had used up that box of pads yet or not. Her children were usually 26 months apart, though she had a couple that were about 3 years apart. With the closer pregnancies I think she might have had one or two periods before getting pregnant again. What you are experiencing is totally within the norm. Just don't assume that because you don't have your period, you won't get pregnant!! Blessings, C.

Hi C..

I breastfed for just under a year (finished in February) and did not have my first period until April. Then it took two months to have another one. I did talk to my OB and another friend...both told me it could take several months to get regular again. If you're concerned, of course, talk to your OB, but I have had the same experience.

My friend has a 16 month old daughter she never got her period the whole time she was breastfeeding she still is breastfeeding her and has started her period in July. She was concerned as well and at her well appt. she asked about it and the dr told her no need to to worry about it it will come and it did.No reason for concern with her in your case may be different just monitor and track your symptoms and if a few months no period see your OB.As with me I breastfeed my 2 kids and still had my period after my 6 week postpartum.

hi C....i don't think you have anything to worry about quite yet. i nursed my son for 16 months with no period the whole time. i would get minor cramping and felt as if i was going to have my period for about a month or 2 after i quit nursing, but didn't actually have one. it will probably take a couple months to get the hormones back to "normal" i guess you could say. not that they are ever normal, but you know what i mean! haha! enjoy the time without one...i know i always did!

I'm not sure if this will help, because I only breastfed for 4 months - my supply just couldn't keep up - long story... Anyway, I stopped at the beginning of June and just had my first cycle last week. Enjoy it while you can! ;)

I was still breastfeeding with both my girls when mine came back but it wasn't right away and didn't actually become regular right away either. I wouldn't worry too much. Sometimes it takes a while for your milk to dry up and if you are one of those people whose body is in baby mode as long as you have milk, then you might not have a regular cycle for a while. If you start to have more signs of pregnancy, take a pregnancy test just to ease your mind. I wouldn't make an extra doctor's appointment for it though.

I nursed my son for 14 months and my period didn't come back for several months after I weaned him. I think I stopped nursing in January and it returned in March or April. I wouldn't worry just yet.

I nursed my last child for 14 months and I don't remember exactly but I'm sure it was at least a month if not two.

I'm sorry, I don't have an answer. I am experiencing the same thing. However, I only quit breastfeeding a month ago. Hopefully it will come back at the end of this month. I'm interested to see what responses you get.

Your body probably still has some of the breastfeeding hormones going through it, and those suppress the hormones of your fertility cycle. The cramping may have been related to the hormones starting to shift, but it may take a while, for some women a few months, before your cycle returns. I think that you are smart to use protection at this point, because it could return at any time-that just depends on your body-and if you are not planning to have another baby at this point you need to take steps to prevent a pregnancy. I personally would wait at least a month before I made an appointment with my OB.
