First Communion and Moms Birthday Cake Dilemma

Hi, I have a small issue and thought this might be the place to get some help. My Granddaughter is celebrating her first communion on the same day as her Moms birthday. My daughter wants to stay in the background and let her have her big day. Last night, the younger sister, age 7 called and said she wanted my help in making a "special cake" for her sister's communion and her Moms birthday as a present that she could give them. She is meaning to make one cake. Any ideas on how I can possibly combine the two as far as decorating? Seems impossible to me. Of course my daughter doesn't know any of this and will probably be ordering a cake for the Communion Party as well so there will be a designated cake for that. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Everyone's suggestions were just amazing. Fantastic ideas! Thank you all so much! My Granddaughter couldn't decide what to do so I think she wants to bake a chocolate cake(moms favorite) for her Mom and then wants to make some special white cupcakes with real flowers and little crosses on them for her sister because there will be a designated Communion cake. I read her all the wonderful ideas and she said she wishes she could make 100 cakes! Thanks again everyone!!

She could put both their names on it...along with pretty flowers around the edge. "Lilly & Cynthia" By the way, you can put real flowers on the edges of the cake and it looks really pretty.I've done this before.

I think that's so nice! Make a family cake with your 7 year old granddaughter! It can celebrate just being a family. There can be balloons on the cake, and flowers, and all the family members' names in different colored frosting. Help your little chef write "family" in the center. It doesn't have to specifically reference the First Communion, or the birthday, but just the fact that this is a family that's happy today for several special reasons (one of which is that your 7 year old granddaughter wants to make a cake for her mommy and big sister!).

Probably a sheet cake would be easier to decorate than a round cake (it's a nice flat surface).

Here's an easy decorating idea that kids can do. Make marshmallow flowers. Buy the regular size (not mini) marshmallows that are pastel colored. Around spring or Easter, most grocery stores offer pink or yellow or light purple marshmallows. Even if you can only find white marshmallows, this can look really pretty on pastel colored frosting on a cake.

Dip a clean pair of scissors in hot water (not boiling). Cut the marshmallow into 4 or 5 slices. The slices will look like flower petals. Using frosting (homemade or from a can), put a little dab on the cake and then stick a marshmallow "petal" on the dab of frosting. Use 4 or 5 to make a flower. Stick a mini marshmallow or pastel colored M&M in the middle for the flower center, using frosting as glue. You can cascade the flowers, or arrange them around the edge of the cake or do whatever your imagination can come up with. No difficult frosting expertise required, and most kids who can cut with scissors safely (with supervision) can cut a marshmallow. The reason you dip the scissors in hot water is so that the marshmallows don't stick to the scissors. Keep dipping the scissors, and keep the water fairly hot.

She’s 7. Help her make a cake and see what ideas she has. It’s a sweet idea and doesn’t have to be perfect.

I'd consider doing a cupcake bouquet and adding a few real flowers. A 7 year old should be able to handle that (with help) and it won't take away from the communion cake your daughter is sure to be ordering. Good luck!

I will think on this, just wanted to say that's adorable, and Elena, love this idea of the marshmallow flowers!

I have never heard of this before and definitely am going to do with the kiddos for Easter. Thanks :)

My thought was what about cupcakes - some decorates (or a little topper) for communion, and some for birthday? that way best of both worlds? My kids loved decorating cupcakes, and those toppers (just on toothpicks) are easy to stick in. You can probably pick up at Michaels or a party place, or have her make some (just cut out some and stick on toothpicks). Could be a fun craft to do together.

How sweet. Talk to your granddaughter about what she envisions for her cake. Maybe take her to a store or spend some time looking online. Cupcakes also would make it a bit easier but maybe she has something in mind.

I would say since you daughter wants to be stay in the background maybe present the cake the night before, you can explain it somewhat to your granddaughter as to Mom will be busy on her birthday. It is the act of kindness that should be celebrated. If I was Mom, I would love this sweet gesture.

editing my answer, i missed that the little girl only wants to make one cake.

still seems to me as if two cakes (maybe small ones) would be easier.

but why is this impossible? a sheet cake with half decorated with balloons or mom's favorite flowers, and the other half with things the grandaughter loves would be very easy, methinks.

even just getting a writing tip and putting 'happy communion' on one side and 'happy birthday' on the other would do.

or cupcakes.

How sweet! I loved the ideas given so she could decorate half the cake for her mother's birthday and half the cake for her sister. Overall, you definitely want her to be able to express that love and excitement for her relatives. Enjoy doing it!

How about a big sheet cake where you can decorate 1/2 for birthday and the other half for 1st communion?
Your 7 yr old grand daughters has a nice idea but it's unusual for kids to make a big deal out of a parents birthday.
You could also just do a nice batch of cupcakes which could be for both without being specific for either celebration.
On a few occasions for my own birthday I've put number candles on a pizza - works for me!
