My daughter's 9th birthday party is next weekend and she wants to do a Luau theme since we are having it at the pool. Any cute beach/luau/pool cake ideas that are fairly easy?
I don't know where you live but for me in Lavon, I go to Rockwall sometimes and they have some really awesome Luau stuff at the Dollar Tree! I love the store because it really is ALL a dollar and these days...it helps!
They have the 'grass skirts' and hanging palm trees and party plates with a tiki hut and palm tree and a monkey on them and cups to match. They really do have a large Luau selection of stuff. You definately need to go!
Cake: Wal-Mart or Sams or some place have great priced and great tasting cakes. If you go now you can get the cake decorated in a Luau fashion. They will also put stuff you buy on the cake or leave a spot where you can put it on.
Games:
**maybe a few new sets of flip flops(also $-Tree) and make a "flip flop toss" like horseshoes.
**find a Luau cd and do the thing where you dip under the bar and with each pass the bar gets lower and lower....
My mom is doing a cake this weekend for the same thing, little girl wants a Luau party. She's doing a hule girl, oyu can get teh girl cake pan, Tan icing in stripes downwards for her hula skirt and what ever colored top and she put a few cupcakes around the top of the board to put the writing on. Looked super cute!

I made two sheet cakes--one chocolate, and one vanilla. Then I cut them out to look like giant flip flops. I iced them with neon blue and green strips, then used licorice sticks for the straps and put a huge silk flower over the straps. For sand, I crushed vanilla wafers very finely and then put the glistening sugar over that to make it sparkle. Then you can add little seashells around for a more beach like look. The cakes were a big hit. Good luck!!

I would do cupcakes. You can color store bought icing with a package of unsweetened koolaid. I would suggest an ocean blue color and then cut flowers off a lei and place them on top of the cupcakes or use fresh flowers.

I think Amy D has already sent you this but I will send it again because I love it www.sugarintheraw.com has a great sandcastle cake. Just go on that site and search of sandcastle cake and you will see it. You just use a sheet cake and ice cream cones fot the turrets. We make it for my daughters birthday last year and it was a big hit. I even used a larger sheet cake than the recipe called for because we had so many people and it still worked perfectly. I was very proud of that cake.

One year I made a sun shaped cake. Talk about super easy. Just take a round cake and stick the pointy ice cream cones around it and cover the whole thing in yellow frosting. Put the frosting on the ice cream cones ahead of time. I also drew a smiley face with sunglasses on mine.

the flip-flops sound really cute. there was a mom who advertised her cake-baking company on here for another response. i looked at her website, and she had a SUPER cute flip-flop cake pictured in her portfolio.
another cute idea would be to make cupcakes (or have them made), and decorate the top of each one to be a brightly colored flower. then, you could arrange them them to look like a lei! so cute!
have fun with this. i think it's such a cute idea!
(it would also be fun to get coconuts - or a fake version - and put some punch or fun drink in them and top it off with one of those colorful drink umbrellas. the girls will feel super special!)

Hi M.!
I just made the most adorable cake and cupcakes for my daughter's swimming party and they were simple and cheap.
For the kiddos, make large cupcakes and ice with water-blue icing. Get brown sugar for sand and pour it in a dish. Dip the edge of the iced cupcake into the "sand" to make a 1/2 circle "island". Buy a huge package of paper drink umbrellas for less than $2.00 in the party section at WalMart. Stick an open umbrella in your "island". Buy a package of gummy life-savers and a package of Teddy Grahams. Use a toothpick and icing to paint faces and bathing suit tops onto the Teddy Grahams. Get a helper to stretch a gummy-saver open and stick the decorated Teddy Graham inside the "inner tube". Place the "inner tube" into the blue water. ADORABLE! And easy to serve!
For the adults I made a sheet cake and iced with the same icing. Poured a big brown sugar "Sand" island in the center. Cut out some fabric for beach towels and some plastic tablecloth for rafts and made a few more "inner tube" teddys.... Decorate the island with umbrellas and teddys lying on their towels (stick them on with a dab of icing). Put teddys on rafts and in inner tubes in the water. EVERY ABSOLUTELY RAVED ABOUT THESE TREATS!
Feel free to contact me and I'll send you pictures!
Have fun at the party!

I was just at a party with the same theme and the girls made their own Fancy Flip flops. Take a cheap (Hobby Lobby)flip flop, cut a plastic leigh (?) wrap it around the straps and hot glue the end. then take a jeweled shoe decoration (looks like a clip on earing) and hot glue where the V of the straps come together. Easy to do, and the girls loved them. They also drank out of plastic Pineapple cups, had fruit kabobs, and served cupcakes with umbrella's in them.
Good luck!

A pineapple upside down cake is easy to make and very colorful.
If you want to go a traditional cake route, you can use brown sugar as the sand and put fresh flowers on it from a lei or iced flowers all around the cake. Use paper umbrellas all around

I ordered a cake from my "cake lady" and she made an absolutely adorable cake. It had a beachy scene and a sand pail stuck in the end of the cake with sea shells pouring out of it. She's incredibly reasonable and ordering would relieve you from lots of added stress. Her email address is ____@____.com's located in Burleson. Good Luck!

Check out Oriental Trading. It might be too late to get something in time for the party but you could get some ideas.
Also, Party City is an option as well as US Toy in Plano. US Toy is a lot like Oriental Trading. They are located on the NW corner of Parker and Independence.
Celebrity Bakery makes fantastic cakes!!

Check out cakecentral.com. It is a website where people (including professionals) post pictures of cakes they have made. I got the best ideas for my son's western party there. You have to create a login, but they don't send many emails. Hope this helps!

I was just in Walmart on Tuesday and they have a Lilo and Stitch cake that has water that is half of the cake and then the beach, and it has clouds and palm trees and of course Lilo and Stitch... I used this same cake without Lilo and Stitch for a couples wedding shower. It was very cute.. Sam's is cheaper if you get it there..

We just did one for our 9 yr old. We based it on flip flops. The invites were flip flops and I had the cake made to look like the invites. I can email a picture of it if you want. We also found flip flop toe rings for party favors. The girls loved it.

First look at the logistics of the party - kids and a pool. This evokes the KISS Principle. Large size cupcakes in a variety of colored icings or sprinkles with paper umbrellas poked in the top for decoration served on a nice cake stand that is draped in flower leis and you're done! No cutting the cake for dripping little bystanders and the cupcakes are very mobile. The kids will love the extra size of the cupcakes and you will appreciate the simplicity of the presentation. Save the Ace of Cakes for when she's older. A couple of little hula girls dolls for table decor will be a big hit and all that stuff is on sale at Party City in Lewisville right now. Have fun!

Hi M., I made a cake similar to the one in the link for my neice's pool party. Instead of using the little people for cake decorations, I used teddy grahms. I used icing to paint little bathing suits and bikinis on them. It was really cute.

I saw Girls Sugar Shack website- she is on mamasource and was absolutely floored by the grat work she does.
If you do it yourself-I would do a pool and have floaties in it and all- I think thats fun- I bet some stiff icing could create a splash- but I would have her favorite things swimming- not people- like puppies or monkeys or whatever she loves!
But I would check out that other business on Mamasource- amazing.
I ahve a hsot assistant business- if you would like to enjoy your own party! Give us a call- youwill be thrilled with our service

If you lived closer you could hire me to make the cake, but I am in Midlothian and that is a long way to drive for a cake. The websites I listed should give you some good ideas and maybe some instruction.

I got a cake for a graduation party from the HEB in Ennis (probably at other HEB"s as well) that was really cute. It was a double layer on one side to make a hut, and then a beach scene on the other. Ask them though which icing works best. One icing they told me doesn't work as well, but I can't remember which one we had.
