Hello -

My daughter is turning 1 in a few months and I have absolutley no idea on what to plan for the big day. Not many of my friends have kids so the party would be mainly family and close friends with just a few kids. Any suggestions for anything in the city or not too far. Another twist, her birthday is October 30, the day before Halloween. I don't really want to do a costume party although this may help everyone get involved in the spirit. I am open at this point....

Please provide suggestions and thanks in advance.

Hi mom don't want to sound like a party pooper but I tell all my daughter friends this. A one year old will not remember this they will not have fun and might be afraid of whatever you come up with because they are not old enough. So if you just have a ice cream cake that will be find. But when she makes two go all out she will love it at that age.Remember this is for the baby have fun.

My son's birthday is in Oct. too. We just did his own birthday party. Some of the things we did since we did not have kids at our party was we play a Trivia game. I made up about 12 questions about my son from what time was he born, how much did he weigh on his last doctors visit, what is his favorite toy, favorite food. Everyone had fun playing that. I made favors buy saving his baby food jars, filled them with M & M's and made labels with his picture on them. We also played Guess how many cheerios are in the jar. Everyone thought that was funny. I made sure to get a picture with my son with each guest(couples) so I could include it in the thank-you card and for his memory book.

Good luck!

My son's birthday is the 29th of October and he will be 3 this year. We did a traditional first birthday with all the I'm 1 stuff and last year did Bob the Builder because that was what he wanted. I would do a I'm 1 birthday and in years after that let her choose. Just because their birthday is close to a holiday does not mean that they have to use that holiday.

Who is the party for your daughter or the people coming? She is turning one and will not remember this day at all. So instead of spending money on a day she will not remember. Have cake and ice cream at your home for family and close friends and call it a day. Take pictures and video but don't spend a lot of money on a day she will not remember.

It doesn't have to be a costume party, but if there are a few kids that might like to wear their costume. Maybe you could have a few Halloween-type activities, like decorating small pumpkins or something. If you like Halloween and her bday is that close, you might as well incorporate it as a "theme" for the party. Otherwise you could choose a character she likes, like Pooh or Elmo as a theme. We just did pink 1st bday decorations for our girls. If it's not going to be at home, maybe choose a pizza place that has a separate party room?

I have three kids - 12, 9 and 6. All three of them had a serious problem with overstimulation at their first birthday parties. I might suggest keeping it simple and calm. Your daughter will not be able to remember or appreciate your effort, but your friends and family will appreciate and remember your gesture for including them in this milestone.

Why can't you just have a small family get together? I think big fancy birthday parties for small children are not warranted. Most times they are more for the adults than the child. I recommend just a small family get together.

Good Luck

Just remember the party is really for you...your daughter will not remember it...my advice is to not go crazy and spend a ton of money. Have it in your home. Save the money you might have spent on an elaborate party and put it in a college fund for her. People could still dress up if you wanted or not.

My son's birthday is October 30th as well. He will be 4. For his first birthday, I did have a costume party with just family and close friends. It really was fun to plan. I had a pinata and bobbing for apples for the older kids. Plus you will get great pictures for your scrapebook! It really is easy to find decorations etc. for a Halloween themed party. Last year, for my son's 3rd birthday, we did a hayride/picnic at Randall Oaks and that was fun too. It was not too expensive either. They also include the use of a pavillion and a campfire for roasting marshmallows. Good Luck!
