My husband has kidney stones ALL the time. His doctor has told him before to go get beer and drink it, it will flush out the fragments of the stone and help control the pain.
Hello ladies! I had this procedure yesterday, and pain meds were needed at the shortest time span possible (4 hours)all day and into the night. I was sent home with a perscription for just 6 pills of which now I only have 3 left, and days two and three are expected to get worse. I talked to my dr. office today and they told me that 6 should be enough, and to just use tylenol. go figure. any advise on how I should handle this? I'm not a "pill seeker," I just want to stay in control of my pain. That isn't too much to ask is it?
Well, I'm now one week out from my ESWL treatment, and let me first thank everyone for their input. I am having very little pain right now, but I'm still a bit sore. After getting shut down by the receptionist again the next day, I waited until the weekend. Then I called the hospital operator and ask her to page the physician on call to call me back. (I work at the hospital, so I know how it works.) It wasn't my personal urologist, but being that I was very well read on my procedure and what was normal or not, I was able to pass on all of the needed information. (Thanks webMD!) I had previously been seen by the urologist that was on call, and he was willing to call in a RX or even leave one at the hospital for me to pick up(Percocet cannot be called in for you nor may any refills be given on it). The doctor even called me back and let me know that the pharmacy was closing early being that it was Christmas Eve. I thought that went WAY ABOVE and beyond his scope of practice, but really appriciated it! For all of you people out there with problems like I was having, or even trying to get through to the pediatric clinics out there, the best way to get the information you need it to speak with the doctor, NOT THE NURSE. You may need to be willing to wait a longer period for your answer, but in the end the doctor is the one to make the decisions, and that is why they get paid the big bucks! Again, thanks for all of your input.
P.S. My kidney stone broke up fairly well. We were hoping for 30% and maybe I'll have a couple more of these treatments. In the future, I'll not worry so much about pain managment. I've got that in the bag!

i can relate to what you are going through. i've passed 4 kidney stones in the last 3-4 weeks. the doctor at first thought it was a back injury and prescribed me tylenol 3 and ibuprofen, then i went back a week later with severe pain and he told me that i had blood in my urine and i was probably trying to pass a kidney stone, he prescribed me more tylenol 3 for the pain and sent me home with a "happy hat" to use to catch the stone if/when it comes. it came later that day, one week after that i passed 3 more in one day.
i have recently read on www.webmd.com that it is not a good idea for people with kidney problems to take ibuprofen or tylenol, so i'm confused now. why did the doctor prescribe these for me knowing that they could damage my kidneys even more than the kidney stones could.

Happy Holidays,

First off, I do know that you can alternante Motrin (Ibuprofen) and Tylenol the same way you do for children with fever and it works great on pain. Be careful with Tylenol because it is bad on your liver and you don't want to take anything that has acetaminophen in it (such as Vicadin) while you take the Tylenol. Ibuprofen can be a little hard on the stomach sometimes but unlike the liver, the stomach will heal itself. My uncle just went through this and he helped relieved the pain by also alternating heat and cold packs on his back. If all else fails, ask the doctor about Vicaprofin.
I sure hope you get to feeling better here at Christmas time!
Don't talk to the nurses, ask to talk to the doctor and don't tell the nurses what you want to talk to the physician about. You need to advocate for yourself. It is your doctors responsibility to take care of you as a patient and often he/she wants to and is only hinder by women who work for them who try to control situations that are not their business. Page your doctor if you have to...being in pain should not be an option. It costs your children, frineds and parents because ultimately they suffer... You will feel better in a few days but should not remain miserable...
Pain could be a sign of other problems. I would go into the doctors office personally. Schedule an appointment and go see him yourself.
Worst case if you run out my dentist told me to take 2 aleeve during the day and 1 at night when I had bad dental pain after oral surgery. It worked well.
