My 7 yo LOVES eggnog. I buy it at the store and sometimes sprinkle it with a bit of cinnamon. It's REALLY fattening, so I limit him to O. small cup per day.
Hi Moms,
Eggnog is a new concept to me. I have had it maybe once (a sip) in the past and all i remember was how awful the taste was. Now, I have kids, and I realize eggnog is part of the American Christmas tradition (Christmas morning). That said, do you think I didn't give it a chance? Is there a way to make eggnog taste better? Do you make your own eggnog or buy at the store. If you make, how do you make it. If you buy it, which one is the best? Do kids like eggnog? Are they allowed to have eggnog?
Yes, I am obsessed with eggnog right now. I really don't know why, but I would like to like it. But I still remember the aftertaste years later.
Thanks.

Thank you moms. After reading your posts, I have decided not to try make my own, but I will give it a shot, maybe with nutmeg or rum like you suggested. My husband got the brand names you recommended so he will shop for a good one.
To the last poster, we always struggle what to do in the morning. I don't want to make the huge breakfast at 6 am, but would like to give my kids something to start the day. It's either eggnog if they go for it or apple cider or something. But the morning seems 'naked' without some kind of a drink in hand, I mean something other than what we usually have which is tea. I don't know what kind of eggnog I was given that one time but must have been pretty bad because I have a huge tolerance for yucky things and I couldn't have one more sip of that drink. So it was pretty bad.
Thanks.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all.

Making your own egg nog involves raw eggs - I won't make it without alcohol added, so it wouldn't be for the kids.
My favorite thing to do with store bought eggnog is to add a little to my morning tea (usually green tea). But it works with herbal teas too.
I always add a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon to the top.
We love eggnog. My boys enjoy it plain and my hubby and I add a little rum. (not in the morning of course)
Wow! I love Eggnog. We buy ours at the store. My husband bought one low fat eggnog at Krogers (Kroger brand) and one regular eggnog at Walmart (Great Value brand) last week. My mom used to make it until she got worried about salmonella poisoning. It really is not a good idea to make it yourself, because the recipe does call for raw eggs. I would suggest buying it a the store because it will be pasteurized and eliminates the chances of salmonella poisoning. Just a warning though: the lowfat is 130 calories per half cup and the whole is 200 calories per half cup.
I also added some to my coffee. Pretty good.
My 15 year old son LOVES eggnog! We buy it at the grocery store - have tried alot of different brands and found they all taste pretty much the same, so usually get whatever's on sale - then add a dash of pumpkin spice on top, or just plain nutmeg. It's great with a shot of rum in it too, but not for the kiddies :)
We get light eggnog at the store, then sprinkle a little ground nut meg on top when we pour a glass of it. My husband thins his with with some milk.
We also like to make a cider wassail at Christmas. I heat it up in the crock pot and it smells wonderful all day long. I'll float a few lemon and orange slices in it and it looks very pretty.

my kids LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Eggnog - I am glad you posted this cause I haven't bought any for them yet....I am going to get some on my way home! I personally like it over ice, it tastes better when it is really cold! But I drink my milk that way too, so it may just be me. LOL ~ It is good with rum in it too if you are having it for an after dinner drink or whatever..... Hope it grows on you!
Not to be all bah humbug, but there are plenty of Americans who *don't* drink egg nog on Christmas morning or any other time of the season. Not to mention, it is terrible for you. That's not to say that people who like it (and I happen to like it myself) shouldn't have it at Christmastime. But if you *don't* like it, I wouldn't foist it on your kids or try to make it a tradition at your own house. Shouldn't your own family's traditions be things you actually like?
Merry Christmas and pass the fruitcake!

Egg Nog is one of my favs! So yummy. I can say though, much to my shock there are people out there that just don't like it and you are probably one of them. I say give it another try and let your kids try and see what happens. I am sure if you still hate Egg Nog (which you probably will) you Christmas will be just fine without it.
Merry Christmas!
P.S. Kids can have Egg Nog, just be sure it is pasturized. I personally like the store bought but my mother likes the homemade.
I loved eggnog all my life. It doesn't have to have alcohol in it, I never knew anyone that actually put it in theirs. I think eggnog tastes good and the carton kind is so much easier to just open and drink. If you haven't done much cooking of milk and egg products then just buy it at a good place like an ice cream store or grocery store.
You could probably "tone down" the eggnog from the store with heavy cream or half and half if it is overwhelming for you.
I am usually a stickler for home made everything.

Our daughter has always loved egg nog.. Could be when you first tried it it had alcohol in it?
I love the "Promise Land" brand.
My best friend makes it all of the time from scratch I will try to get her recipe.. it is Yummy!
I love eggnog but there is only one brand I like everything else in my opinion doesn't even compare it. I like the Borden's Eggnog which comes in a round tall metal can. I will usually sprinkle some cinnamon or nutmeg on it too-mmmmmm soooo good. It might be the thickness you don't like-try adding some milk to it.
OMG I love Eggnog. As a kid my mom used to mix it with regular 2% milk so it wasn't as strong or thick. As an adult I drink it straight.
If you make it yourself you have to make sure you do it right so the eggs are cooked by the sugar (at least thats the way I was taught), and there are alcoholic and non alcoholic versions of it. Making it involves paying attention to when and how long you stir the eggs, separating the yolk from the whites, and yadda yadda yadda. Just buy it from a store!
We also have it all Christmas week, not just on Christmas morning.
If this is your first time, I would try it from a store, try mixing it with milk to make it less thick and strong, sprinkle some cinnamon or nutmeg on top and give it a try.
Eggnog milkshakes are also awesome! So are egnog sugar cookies.
My baby is 22 months and LOVES it. Good Luck!
I'm not a great eggnog fan - I think because when I was young the nog I was given contained too much cinnamon for my taste. My husband used to buy eggnog from the grocery and drink the whole quart, but he's diabetic now and it's on his no-no list.
One year I wanted to try making eggnog from scratch. (I get those compulsions once in a while.) I looked up a recipe in the "Joy of Cooking" edition I owned. My mother was visiting and we had fun making it, but the nog came out too sweet even for me, and I have more than one sweet tooth! I don't drink, but we added the recommended amount of alcohol to see how it would taste, and it came out very, very potent! Well, it was an enriching educational experience, anyhow.
I bet you could find eggnog recipes online to experiment with if you want to. Why not give it a try? Do be very cautious about the eggs, though. My children tasted non-alcoholic nog when young, but they weren't impressed. But I know who folks for whom Christmas could not happen without eggnog. I have friends who love it with their morning coffee.
